85 Year Old College Graduate Sets a High Standard

By Robyn Tellefsen / www.seniorsforliving..com

This spring, Willadene Zedan (pictured here) earned a degree with honors from Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She also started a new job. Whats so special about this new college grad? Well, for one thing, shes 85 years old. Zedan didnt always have her sights set on a college education. But after her husband of 50 years passed away, she decided she wanted to keep her mind alert by auditing a college class. That was in 1999, when she was 71. In the years since, the theology major has ramped up her coursework and made time to participate in the Honor Society. Not only that, Zedan spent five weeks studying abroad in Rome last year, learning about Italy in the 19th and 20th centuries as well as Italian literature. As her college career progressed, Zedan realized she was doing more than staving off boredom and dementia she was training for a new career. With her brand new college diploma, shell be accompanying her own doctor on visits to homebound patients, encouraging them to be as mentally and physically active as possible. Zedans five children, 15 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren came together for the momentous occasion of her college graduation, though not all have been completely thrilled with her success. In fact, she says, some of her grandchildren have been raked over the coals by their parents for receiving subpar grades. The argument: My mothers on the deans list. If Grandma can do it, why cant you? A compelling argument indeed. Moriah thanks our Music Man / Chef Man Cantor Eric S. Freeman for so ably substituting for Yehuda during his vacation.

BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION GROUP
tackles another best-selling title

Come join the group on Monday, September 16th at 2 pm, as we discuss Vanessa Diffenbaughs enchanting novel, The Language of Flowers.

A mesmerizing, moving, and elegantly written debut novel, The Language of Flowers beautifully weaves past and present, creating a vivid portrait of an unforgettable woman whose gift for flowers helps her change the lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own troubled past. The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, its been more useful in communicating grief, mistrust, and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system, Victoria has nowhere to go and sleeps in a public park, where she plants a small garden of her own. Soon a local florist discovers her talents, and Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But a mysterious vendor at the flower market has her questioning whats been missing in her life, and when shes forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether its worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

Register in the office and receive a library copy of this bestseller for advance reading. See what everybody has been reading and join in the discussion!

Falls Prevention Awareness Day September 22, 2013

The 6th annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Day (FPAD) will be observed on Sept. 22, 2013 to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults. This years theme, Preventing FallsOne Step at a Time, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls.

Debunking the Myths of Older Adult Falls

Myth : Falling is something normal that happens as you get older.
Reality: Falling is not a normal part of aging. Strength and balance exercises, managing your medications, having your vision checked and making your living environment safer are all steps you can take to prevent a fall.

Myth : If I limit my activity, I won't fall.

Reality: Some people believe that the best way to prevent falls is to stay at home and limit activity. Not true. Performing physical activities will actually help you stay independent, as your strength and range of motion benefit from remaining active. Social activities are also good for your overall health.

Myth : Taking medication doesn't increase my risk of falling.

Reality: Taking any medication may increase your risk of falling. Medications affect people in many different ways and can sometimes make you dizzy or sleepy. Be careful when starting a new medication. Talk to your health care provider about potential side effects or interactions of your medications.
