Floating Trees (2012), by Jacinda Baynes Jacinda describes the origin of her image: Close to the city of Chengdu in the mountains is a place called Jiuzhaigou this place is described as a Chinese wonderland, with unbelievable colours from the crystal clear turquoise water to the bright reds and oranges of the plant life. Thousands of Chinese people go to Jiuzhagou for their holidays and fill this park. The painting Floating Tree was inspired by this place. A small tree that had grown out a dead fallen tree in the middle of a lake caught my eye as many crowds of people walked passed unaware. It had such a magical quality as it sat there still in the blue water. I painted the tree in watercolour and then back in my studio in Perth Fremantle I used oil on canvas to really bring the image to life. The Art Prizes Australia Planner is now entering its third year and with the support of you and our sponsors and advertisers we continue publishing the most up to date information about prizes for Australian and overseas artists. Last year we covered art prizes worth more than $5 million - already, in January 2013, we are listing prizes worth over $1.5 million. This years Planner has grown from previous years, as has the website. The art prize scene in 2013 shows the resilience of art prizes to the short-term contraction of the art market: artists are still creating, sponsors are still offering generous prizes, and artists around the country are enjoying the wealth and diversity of prizes on offer. The Art Prizes website will very soon be offering lots more information as we consolidate the fabulous Australian Art Competitions (AAC) website into ours. Wed like to especially thank Martina Pook, Director of AAC, for her generosity. We conducted our second annual survey over November 2012 and the results were first published in December 2012. Here is a snapshot of the survey. The Archibald Prize continues to be the prize most artists aspire to win. Newcomers to the list of desirable prizes include the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and the Fleurieu Art Prize (biennial). Two thirds of survey respondents believe that artists would benefit from a national code of conduct to ensure judging and awarding of prizes is always on a 'level playing field'.
Professional and emerging artists are the groups most likely to enter interstate prizes.

The most significant criteria when artists select prizes to enter are: the prize's prestige the prize money on offer and the publicity the finalists will be given.
Prize hosts need to balance these three elements in order to attract the maximum number of entrants.
