At the start of the course, I assume that -My students have fairly good vocabulary but not enough for the materials to read. -They know a standard level of English grammar. -They are not trained to read in natural speed or in limited time. Points of view that are stressed in this course include -A skill to read in a certain speed and to grasp a content precisely. -To enrich their vocabulary

Some essential questions students learn to answer in this course are as follows; -What is a phrasal reading? -What is a paragraph? -What is a topic sentence and a main idea? -What is a coherence between sentences? -What is an introduction, body and conclusion? -What are the prefix and suffix? -What is the idea of a word derivation? Some essential concepts students learn about in this course are as follows; Phrasal reading / Paragraph and Topic sentence and main idea / Coherence / Structure of a passage or an article/ affix / a word derivation Students will need to access information about slash reading, sight translation and etymology.

Concepts What essential concepts do students learn about in this course? (a list of essential concepts is acceptable. Conclusions / Inferences Based on the learning students do in this course, what conclusions will students draw or what inferences might they make?

Having learned to read phrase by phrase, students will likely to conclude that this skill is practical to read materials under time constraints. Having learned to pay attention to a paragraph, its structure and a series of them, students will likely to follow and grasp an authors purpose in a reading material.

Implications What are some implications of the above inferences/conclusions that students learn to make in this course?

Based on the above-mentioned inferences/conclusions that students are likely to make, some implications are as follows; They need to learn reading skills besides vocabulary and grammar since their mother tongue Japanese is linguistically so distant from English.
