The purpose of this portfolio is to provide you with summary of my education and skill set, as well as a
resume and my plans for my future after graduating high school.

I am a high school senior currently attending Puget Sound Skills Center. I used to go to Lindbergh
High School, where I skipped networking I because of prior knowledge, and took Networking II & III
courses through Sartori Education Center. Here, I got some tech prep credits. After high school I would
like to attend Green River Community College for 2 years, then continue to the University of
Washington to complete my Bachelor’s in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering. I am considering
double majoring, with the additional major being in Computer Science.

My first time on the computer dates back to 1995. My grandfather would show me how to do basic
things such as make run CDs, make word documents, and surf the web. I was fluent with the Microsoft
Windows operating system by the age of 8. I learned more about computers through elementary school
and middle school. Before taking any specialized classes, I had taught myself a lot about computers. I
built my first custom computer when I was only 13.

Starting 2004, I began doing freelance computer and network diagnosis and repair. My initial
customers consisted of friends of the family. Word of mouth and customer satisfaction quickly built my
clientele. I had a large range of work, including installing software, setting up a network, adding
security to network, replacing broken parts, reformatting hard drives, updating software, upgrading
operating systems, and much more.

PSSC has given me an invaluable education. My instructor, Jim McMurchie, is an instructor for the
CCNA courses at Bellevue Community College, and has extensive hands-on knowledge from working
in the network administration and contract managing fields for a manufacturing company. I strongly
believe the wealth of knowledge he has shared with us here in the CNS class will help us in the future.

Welcome to the new and revised linux matrix. With input from my advisory committee
and from students, we've changed the format and requirements. All first year students
must complete all tasks listed in tier one. Second years must complete the items in tier 2.

After completing tier one, interested first year students can complete tier two items for
extra credit. Second years wanting Linux extra credit can propose projects to Dustin
Lomax, Skylar Ragan or myself.

Dustin, Skylar or I can sign off on each item.

Tier One:

Install a distribution of Linux

Write a program that prints your name/age
Send an e-mail with an attachment
Copy a document off the web into a text file
Write a program to echo user input
Create a user account
Delete a user account
Disable a user account
Edit an audio file
Copy a file to a remote computer securely
Identify your shell
Set up a printer and print something over the network
Run a file system check
Create and mount a new filesystem
Delete a file from both the GUI and command line
Change the default runlevel
Change the IP address from both the command line and GUI

Tier 2

Configure and install software from source

Display advanced proficiency with a piece of free open source software
Install components for and configure a Webserver with virtual hosting or an email server
Show what libraries a program uses
Mount a network drive
Upgrade your kernel from source
Create a Linux network user from the command line
Automate a task using command line time commands
Complete the Perl intro as listed on the web site
http://www.linux.org/lessons/interm/c1618.html#USE-PERL and write a perl script to print out
lines 4 through 10 of a text file.

Have fun

1. The student has completed their required tier 1000/

Senior Project Narrative Essay Proposal – Online Graphic Arts Portfolio

The purpose of my senior project is to delve into the market of Graphic Design. I

have often played around in Adobe Photoshop, and I think with the right marketing, I can

use this to put myself through college doing freelance work. This is challenging because I

have to make artwork that has the quality to compel a client to hire me opposed to other

artists. Another challenge is creating the portfolio itself. Instead of just a folder with

pictures in it, I want to make a website to display my work as well as my PSSC portfolio.

The only background knowledge I have is my previous experience with Adobe

Photoshop. Although I do have some html experience from using Myspace, I want to

make somewhat of an interactive website, using advanced web design. I have never

attempted to make a website before.

My background research has included me looking at online photography

portfolios to get a feel for what my website should be like. I also looked into the different

methods of designing a website. These include html, xml, css, javascript, flash, and more.

This incorporates learning outside of the classroom because the CNS program at

PSSC doesn’t have any curriculum on graphic design, other than creating a diagram of

the classroom. There is no web related curriculum outside of making a wiki article. I have

to use analytical thinking because I have to analyze the quality of my artwork, as well as

the quality of my website. I’ll use logical thinking by making sure the code I use in the

website works. I’ll use creative thinking by coming up with my own unique artwork. This

meets the interdisciplinary requirement because it incorporates both Computer Science

and Graphic Design.

I plan on achieving my goals by meeting with a mentor currently working in the

field of Internet marketing. They will have the experience needed to guide me through

the process of creating a website, especially in the sense that I am marketing my skills. I

will set deadlines for myself to work by, giving myself plenty of time for research as well

as time for creating the art. I will need a few resources. I require are a computer, which I

already have. Adobe Photoshop will be needed for the art, but I can get it for free because

I go to DeVry University in the Passport 2 College program. I will program the websites

using the text editor, Wordpad. The last resource I will need is information on web

design. I can get this from http://www.w3.org/, http://www.w3schools.com/, and/or from

books on the subject.

This project involves the community because I will be working with a

professional in the industry of Internet Marketing. I will also be taking volunteers to use

pictures to edit for my artwork. When I am finished with the website, I plan on uploading

it and using it for prospective freelance graphic design jobs.

The intended outcome of the product is a complete website with my graphic

design portfolio. The website will have a short biography about me, and my contact

information. It will also have my resume and some references. Once I finish my PSSC

Portfolio, I will also include that on the website.

Senior Project Reflective Essay – Online Graphic Arts Portfolio

The Senior Project I chose was an online graphic art portfolio. Prior knowledge

that I had was a small amount of experience using Adobe Photoshop before. I also had a

small amount of experience in HTML, from editing my Myspace page. I expected to

learn how to use more features of Adobe Photoshop to create unique artwork, and learn

how to build a website that would display my portfolio of this artwork. The purpose of

this project was to challenge myself by learning something completely new. I also chose

this specifically because I think the skills learned could be used to do freelance graphic

design, which I can use to help put myself through college. I extended my knowledge

vastly by learning new techniques in Adobe Photoshop, and learning how to get

additional tools for the program, such as custom brushes and fonts. I educated myself in

web design by exploring the different methods of coding a website, and implementing the

ones I thought would be most effective, with the help of my mentor.

My project started as just a plan on paper. I began my work by asking friends for

some pictures to edit. Slowly, I began transforming normal photographs into original

works of art. On several occasions I met with my mentor, an expert in the field of Internet

Marketing, to review my work and get help when I needed it. I explored many different

tools in Adobe Photoshop, creating several unique images that were completely different

from the original picture(s).

My organizational and workplace skills grew because I had to set and meet

deadlines for myself, schedule meetings with, and follow through with my mentor. I

dressed professionally during each of these meetings, and treated the project like an
actual web design and graphic design job. I also needed to collect different pictures, make

artwork out of them, and then sort the finished pieces from the original photographs.

I have several strengths as a learner. I am persistent. Whenever a problem arises, I

don’t give up. I see to it that any problems are eliminated. I am creative. I try to look at

things from different perspectives, and use my own ideas rather than simulate those of

other people. I love learning new things. I am very willing to do research if I don’t know

something that I need to. I am confident. I am not afraid to ask for help when I need it.

Lastly, I work effectively alone or on a team. By myself, I put all of my knowledge and

skills to the best of my ability. On a team, I use synergy to my advantage, and try to bring

out the best in everyone.

On the other hand, I do have some weaknesses. My Crohn’s Disease is a big

obstacle in my education. I have physical limitations because of it. I also have a weak

immune system from some of my medication, making me more prone to other illnesses.

This can leave me bed-ridden and/or fatigued at times, clouding my thinking. Sometimes

when I’m trying to do something, I get distracted. Sometimes when I’m researching, I go

off on a tangent until the subject I’m reading about is irrelevant to what I was supposed to

be learning about. However, I’ve learned to control most of my weaknesses. I try not to

go out too much so I don’t get sick, and I have more self-discipline than I used to.

I think my project has a strong link to my future. I have become a lot more

interested in Graphic Design and Web Design while working on my project. I am

considering changing my focus from Engineering to Graphic Design. Whether I decide to

do that or not, I can use the skills I’ve gained to help pay my way through college. My

mentor has already offered me some graphic design work. Since I didn’t receive any
scholarships, any money I can get will help me get through college. Another reason the

skills gained will help me in the future is because I will have more marketability for a

career if I have these skills.

In conclusion, I’m very happy with the results of my senior project. I learned

several valuable new skills, practiced working in a business atmosphere, and overall had

a very enriching experience. I learned a lot about web design, as well as Adobe

Photoshop. I learned how to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) in conjunction with

HTML documents. I learned how to change a Portable Document Format file into a

Shockwave Flash file. I learned how to incorporate a Shockwave Flash file into an

HTML document. I learned how to get new brushes in Adobe Photoshop, or make my

own. I learned how to get new fonts to use in Adobe Photoshop. I learned different

techniques to create or alter images in Adobe Photoshop. I’m impressed with how well

everything went. I created many beautiful pieces of art using newly learned techniques. I

successfully created a website to display my biography and contact information, CNS

portfolio, graphic art portfolio, and references. A few things could be improved. The

website could be better if it looked the same in any browser. Also, I could’ve spent a lot

less time if I had backed up my work more often. I lost some work when I lost one of my

flash drives, when Microsoft Office crashed, and when my laptop died. Overall, my

senior project was a very valuable experience, and I enjoyed doing it.

Virus /
Worm 30
Trojan
Make sure your definition clarifies the similarities and differences of each
A virus is a program written with malicious intent and sent out by attackers.

A worm is a self-replicating program harmful to networks.

A trojan is technically a worm, but disguises itself as a useful program.

5. What three things can technicians and organizations do to protect against 30

viruses, trojans and worms /
30
Install anti-virus software, establish a written security polciy, and make employees more
aware of the dangers of opening e-mail attachments that may contain a virus or worm.

6. Describe each of these three Web Tools that might be exploited by attackers; 30
ActiveX /
Java 30
JavaScript
A page with Active X has to download a small applet in order to have full functionality.

Java is a programming language that allows applets to run in a web browser.

Javascript is a programming language made to interact with html to allow interactive

websites.

7. Define each of the following; 40

Adware /
Spyware 40
Grayware
Phishing
Adware is software that displays advertising on your computer.

Spyware is a type of grayware that is distributed without the user knowing, and monitors
computer activity.

Grayware is a software other than a virus that can be harmful. It often uses phishing to
steal personal information.

Phishing is where an attacker pretends to be a legitimate organization to steal

information such as password/username.

8. What are two common types of DoS attacks? 20

/
20
ping of death sends a series of repeated large pings that crash the recieving computer

email-bomb sends a large quantity of bulk email that overwhelms the email server
preventing users from accessing it.

9. What is a denial of service (DoS) attack? 10

/
10
An attack that stops users from accessing normal services.

10. What is spam and why is it considered a threat and not just an annoyance? 10
/
10
Spam is junk email. It is dangerous because it may contain harmful links or deceptive
content.

11. List some common indications than an email message might be spam 10
/
10
No subject line, incomplete return addresses, computer generated emails, return emails
not sent by the owner.

12. What is a social engineer? 10

/
10
Someone who tricks other people into giving away the information needed to access a
computer or network.

13. List at least three ways you can help protect against social engineering 30 /
30
don't give out any of your passwords, restrict access of unexpected visitors, lock
your computer when you leave your desk.

14. List and explain at least three types of common TCP/IP attacks 30 /
30
Spoofing pretends to be a trusted computer to gain access to resources on devices.

Replay uses network sniffers to get usernames and passwords to be used later to gain
access

DNS Poisoning Changes the DNS records on a system to point to false servers where
the data is recorded

15. What is hardware deconstruction and why is it important? 10 /

10
Hardware deconstruction is the process of removing sensitive data permanently from
hardware or software before recycling or throwing away.

16. List the four levels of the security pyramid 10

/
10
physical, wireless, data,

17. List at least three issues that should be addressed in a company security policy 30
/
30
Define a process for handling network security incidents

Describe what to log and how to store the logssuch as the event viewer, system log files,
or security log files

Describe behaviours allowed an prohibited.

18. List at least three ways of physically protecting computer equipment 30

/
30
control access to the building, use cable locks with equipment, use security cages around
equipment.

19. List some means that could be used to protect physical access to 10
facilities: /
10
use card keys that contain user data, biometric sensors (for fingerprints and the
like), a posted security guard.

20. Describe the difference in the protection offered be a BIOS password 10 /

vs. a Login password: 10
bios password prevents bios settings from being changed. a login password
prevents unauthorized access to a network.

21. List four rules for a good password policy: 20 /

20
passwords should expire after a certain amount of time

passwords should contain a mix of numbers and letters

passwords shouldn't be written down and left in an unprotected area

rules about password expiration and lockouts should be defined.

22. How does assigning users to groups simplify the process of administering 25
security? /
25
You can simply assign or remove a user from a group with the desired/unwanted group
policy.

23. What device is used to control the type of data sent to a computer by selecting 10
which ports will be open and which will be secured? /
10
A firewall.

24. List and describe three important considerations for data backups 30
/
30
frequency of backups - making a full monthly backup with partial backups inbetween is
easy. multiple recordings of backups can take a long time to restore though

storage of backups - backups should be transported offsite for extra security

security of backups - protect backups with passwords

25. What makes NTFS a more secure file system than FAT32? 10
/
10
NTFS has journaling and encryption capabilities.

26. Explain and define each: 50

WEP /
WPA 50
LEAP
WTLS
WEP is easy to crack. It is Wired Equivalency Privacy. If the keys used for encryption
are obtained, they can be used to decode the messages sent over the network.

WPA is Wi-Fi Protected Access. It is an improved version of WEP created as a

temporary solution until 802.11i was released.

LEAP is Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol and was created by Cisco to

address the weaknesses of WEP and WPA

WTLS is Wireless Transport Layer Security and was designed to provide security to

Postmortem Assignment - BIOSHOCK

A postmortem is an article with 5 points on what went right during the

development process of the game and 5 points on what went wrong, for a total of 10
points. My postmortem is on BIOSHOCK, a first person shooter by 2K Games.

What went right:

1) The demos allowed for identification of problems and solutions, excitement about the
game, as well as support for the game
• The project was signed after GameSpot ran an exclusive feature based on a
single-room graphics demo
• BIOSHOCK had been relatively unknown outside of the game development
community, so they used that to their advantage in the message they wanted the
demo to deliver.
• The Big Daddy that protected the Little Sisters were changed from something
small, into an epic battle, and bigger part of the game
2) Redesigning the levels to provide a more compelling experience
• The original prototype was something that looked like an abandoned box factory
• They started from scratch, creating something of an underwater utopia
• A decision to remove physics objects from the game was cancelled because it
would remove a lot of interactivity in the game
• The game was originally more of an RPG, but was changed into a first person
shooter
3) Input from focus groups
• The first focus testing was with friends of friends, and brought mostly positive
feedback
• After the first beta, a new group that didn’t know anything about 2K Games or
BIOSHOCK was used, yielding many user frustrations.
o The first level was too dense, confusing, and not engaging
o They didn’t interact with the Big Daddies
o Couldn’t figure out how to use certain weapons
• Changed the gameplay in the first two levels to be slower paced, including more
of a walkthrough.
4) Small, effective teams
• Days before the first demo, they realized it was a mess
• A small strike team was created to fix AI problems.
o Tuned weapons with a designer, an animator, a modeler, a programmer,
the effects specialist, and an audio designer.
• Over the course of development, many strike teams were made to work on many
problems, such as AI, animation, visual effects, and cinematics
5) Talented & flexible staff
• Initially, BIOSHOCK was meant to be a 2 year project with a team of 30
o 25 in Boston for gameplay, and 5 in Australia for the core engine
• The Australian office was utilized to work on other parts of the game
o The Australian team already knew the engine and the game, and had easy
access to the core technology team
o They came up to speed quickly, and were very productive
o The time difference was a small communication challenge, but allowed
bugs to be worked on day and night

What went wrong:

1) Late change of product type
• Product type unclear at the beginning
• Change from Hybrid RPG-FPS to focused FPS
o Came after initial production phase
• Everything had been according to plan, but as the alpha version of the game
approached, it was realized that BIOSHOCK wasn’t on track to be a marketable
game.
• Even though they set up schedule to allow 6 months of finalizing, they ended up
needing to extend the remaining schedule.
2) Content development came late
• Many drafts of the story were made, but final draft was almost a complete re-
write
• Many implementation problems appeared for the first time in the final draft, and
should’ve been fixed earlier
• Lots of content came way after beta version, causing the team to get the content
installed correctly while also working on fixing bugs.
3) Goals and visions were beyond the capacity of the team
• Ideas that started up small ended up requiring a huge amount of coordinated
support
• A regular review cycle wasn’t created until late in the development cycle.
• Only the high level of dedication of the team working on BIOSHOCK allowed
the game to be as polished as it was.
o People pacing themselves for 6 weeks of work ended up with 3 months or
more
4) Inefficient processes and tools
• Many were confusing to use, leading to slow iteration cycles and bugs
• A lack of scripting code standard made choosing the right script action time
consuming.
o One script action might be “Change<SystemProperty>” while another
would be “Set<SystemProperty>” or “Modify<SystemProperty>”
• The content baking process was slow and difficult to troubleshoot
5) Lack of data
• Game log system was barely enough to analyze single play-throughs, and couldn’t
analyze a file containing data from multiple play-throughs.
• No good methodology to define what information was logged
• Most people in the office used shortcuts or cheat codes at the start of the level
instead of playing from the start of the game, making the team base a lot of early
tuning on crappy assumptions on how players would build their characters

Real Networks Vs Hollywood

Real Networks is being sued by Hollywood because of their software RealDVD. Hollywood has

no right to sue this company. Consumers should have the right to backup copy of our DVD in case the

original copy gets lost, broken, or stolen. Real DVD is a legal DVD burner. This software has code that

unscrambles DVDs, but doesn’t allow for illegal copies to be made. This is fair to both the consumers,

and the film industry.

With Real DVD, you get to backup DVDs to your computer. “… Educators theoretically

wouldn’t have to worry about buying replacement copies of DVDs that are shown in class; they could

make backup copies and store these on a computer hard drive in case the original disc becomes

damaged.” This would help schools, which are payed for by tax payers, save money.

“Real DVD eliminates the hassle of searching through piles of DVD cases to find a missing disc

and the disappointment of finding a favorite disc scratched and unplayable. Saving DVDs lets consumers

create a valuable back-up copy of their digital library on their computer or portable drive for playback at

home or on the road.” This would be useful when traveling, because you could just bring your laptop with

you instead of your entire library of DVDs. “Real DVD eliminates the hassle of searching through piles of

DVD cases to find a missing disc and the disappointment of finding a favorite disc scratched and

unplayable.”

Real Networks shouldn’t be sued because there are so many free DVD burning programs

available for download on the internet. These programs are illegal, and can make an exact copy of a

DVD. Real Networks is unfairly being singled out for punishment. The software is completely legitimate

and doesn’t harm the film industry since illegal copies can’t be made.

Paying for College

Most people fit under the categories of either being able to pay for college from savings, or

qualifying for government aid based on need. However, I don't have either of these. My mother doesn't

make much money, but I am claimed as a dependent of my father. My father makes a lot of money, but

never saved any money for me to go to college with.

One option of mine is to work really hard to get a Cisco Scholarship to pay for my degree. I am

currently enrolled in a class at DeVry with waived tuition. If I get a B or higher, I am elligible for a

Cisco Scholarship that would pay for my entire degree, a little over 1500 per quarter.

Another thing I might do is attend community college until I get my associate's degree, and

transfer to a University with money I've saved up plus student loans. Community college is a lot

cheaper, and would work just as well as going to a University for the first 2 years of college.

My third option would be to directly enter the workforce through an apprenticeship or

internship. Direct experience in this industry would be very helpful for future jobs. While I would start

out with low pay, it'd be better than being a student without pay. The downside is that I would have to

work my way up to the position I'd get if I had a degree. I could still get certifications to increase my

job security.

My Plans for the Future

I have always loved computers and electronics since I was on a child. First using a computer

when I was 4 years old, and keeping up with the advances in hardware and software. I can't see

anything I'd rather do than have a career with technology, such as computer networking or engineering.

My grandfather first introduced me to computers. He often had me sit with him while he'd use

the computer, effectively teaching me how to navigate windows by the age of 5. My dad bought our

first computer at home when I was around 6, and I've known how to use a computer much better than

him my whole life.

In high school, my counselor noticed my interest in computers and recommended me join a

special program. There were special classes offered off the campus of Lindbergh High School, at the

Sartori Education Center in Renton. One of these was Networking. I took Networking I-II as a

Sophomore, and continued when I was a Junior for Networking III-IV. Now as a senior, I am taking

Computer Networking Systems here at PSSC, expanding my knowledge of computers and network

administration.

Just recently at a job fair hosted at PSSC, I was offered a great opportunity by an admissions

officer at DeVry University after talking about my love for computers. I was offered a class with

waived tuition through a program called Passport-2-College. This program allows a high school senior

to take one of a handful of classes with waived tuition, so the student only has to pay for class

materials. I plan on going through this class, and hopefully getting a Cisco Scholarship to pay for my

entire degree. Whether I get that or not, I am going to try to get other forms of financial aid such as

grants and other scholarships.

In the future I'd like to return to college to further my education. What I want to do the most is

work for a few years, and continue my education by getting a degree in Electrical or Electronic

engineering. This would increase my job security even more, as well as increase my salary.
I would like to work at Microsoft or Cisco, but if I can't, there are plenty of other jobs that

would fit me. Whether it be Network Administrator, Computer Service Technician, or something else,

the skills I have would all allow for a job with a great salary, and would be fun to me as well.
