Syllabus Welcome to Speech!

Course Description This Speech and Debate course will prepare you to speak and debate effectively and competitively. It will also provide you the opportunity to develop skills necessary to succeed in the college setting and compete in the world of work. There will be a variety of units and assignments utilizing all types of speech and debate formats. You will develop self-confidence through writing and presenting speeches on various subjects. The development of skills in researching, outlining, speech writing and critical listening will be stressed with a special emphasis on organization and delivery of speeches.

A binder or a section of a binder to keep all handouts and lecture/reading notes Note cards (this is critical) Writing supplies: pens, pencils, writing paper, and current reading materials.

Course Expectations: Above all since this is a class that revolves around giving speeches and critiquing each others work, you are expected to respect your classmates and show a commitment to improving all the skills that comprise an effective communicator. All final draft manuscripts or outlines are due the day of your speech. No exceptions. All post speech reflections are due the class period after your speech presentation or it is considered late.

Entering the Classroom
Turn off your cell phones and put them away. Check the board for instructions. When the bell rings, be at your desks and ready to begin class. Homework should be completed before you walk into the classroom and is due at the beginning of the period. Do not walk into class and attempt to do it then.

Returning Student Work


Most work is returned to your portfolio, unless it needs to be discussed. Take the initiative to periodically check your portfolio before or after class. Exiting the Classroom Stay in your seats. Do not cluster by the door waiting for the bell.

When You Are Absent It is 100% your responsibility to find out what assignments and lecture notes you missed. Steps you are expected to take include: 1) email Ms. Springer - most effective 2) contact a classmate 3) check the work binder at the back table. The work binder is located at the student workstation in the back of the room turn and look there now. If you see it, initial here _______________. Your initials tell me you know where to find the work binder. Complete make-up work and make-up tests within the allotted time.

Since there are no quiz make-ups, to avoid the loss of points a student may: email the teacher on the day of the absence requesting work; complete an agreed upon alternate assignment, an enrichment project, or utilize your Renaissance Incentive Card at the quarter to recover some or all points.
