Show Symposiums

Including “Art Talk” with art critic, Dave Hickey; “Art & Money”, moderated by renowned

San Diego, Calif. (June 15, 2009) Today, Beyond the Border International
Contemporary Art Fair (BTB), scheduled for September 2-4, 2009 in San Diego,
announced an exciting and educational list of show symposiums featuring well-
renowned guest speakers and moderators, including “Art Talk”, “Art & Money”, and
“Artist Talks on Art, Critical Dialogue”. Attendees of BTB will experience a unique
opportunity to sit-in on discussions about art investing, the current state of the art
market, and contemporary art practices.

Thursday, Sept. 3rd. at 11am - 12pm: “Art Talk” with Dave Hickey, one of the best-
known American art and culture critics practicing today, will explore his arguments
against academicism and in favor of the rough and tumble free markets on art. Dave
Hickey has been the subject of numerous profiles in The New York Times, The Los
Angeles Times, and U.S. News and World Reports. A special opportunity to have an
intimate lunch with Dave Hickey following the symposium is available. Tickets for this
luncheon can be found on the event website. Art LTD. Magazine sponsors both the
symposium and luncheon.

Thursday, Sept. 3rd at 3pm - 5pm: Arthur Lipper, investment banker, author, lecturer,
corporate advisor and financier, will moderate “Art & Money”. He has been a member
of the New York Stock Exchange as well as many other stock and commodity
exchanges. J.S. Oliver Capital Management sponsors this symposium. Panelists
include: Ian Mausner of J.S. Oliver Capital Management; Peter Kloman of Christies Los
Angeles, a specialist in American art and auctions; Bob O’Connell of Barney and Barney
Fine Art Insurance; Mathew Butterick of Butterick Law Corporation; and Rebecca A.
Meyer, Managing Director of Pitcairn. Collectors of art have a range of money-related
questions regarding the investment they have made in acquiring works of art. The
question areas to be addressed include: acquisition cost basis and negotiation with
sellers, conservation issues, inheritance and other tax concerns, selling works of art,
insurance, legal rights regarding the use of the acquired works, use and retention of

expert advisors, negotiating the terms of donation to museums and authenticating the
validity and provenance of works of art.

Friday, Sept. 4th from 10am - 3pm: “Artists Talks on Art, Critical Dialogue” will be
co-moderated by Marcela Quiroz Luna, Curator of EnTijuanarte09 and Bill Kelley, Jr.,
Managing Director of LatinArt.com. Artists featured include: Shinpei Takeda, Nina
Waisman, Fabian Cereijido, Iana Quesnell and Daniel Ruanova. Artists will discuss new
contemporary art practices and explore issues relating to identity, new urbanism, and
new mediums.

San Diego’s first Beyond the Border International Contemporary Art Fair (BTB) is a 3-
day contemporary art fair that will include national and international galleries featuring
over 500 works by jury-selected established and emerging contemporary artists from all
over the world, exhibiting in The Grand Del Mar’s expansive ballroom accompanied by
numerous luxury exhibitors and food and wine events. The event will showcase over $4
million in artwork coupled with sponsors such as Maserati, Modern Luxury Media,
Qualcomm, Christie’s, The American Institute of Wine and Food, The California Bipolar
Foundation, Lugano Diamonds, and many others. BTB anticipates ATTENDANCE OF
over 3,000 new and established collectors over the three days.
