How does the program work?

In this online class, you and I will work 1-on-1 to perfect your writing abilities for the Task 1 and Task 2 portions of the IELTS exam (either Academic or General). On the following pages of this document, you will find 10 sample Academic Task 1 questions, 10 sample General Task 1 questions and 20 sample Academic or General Task 2 questions. You will choose any of these questions to respond to, write your response (please save as a Word .doc or .docx file) and submit it to me via email. I will personally read your writing and share with you my thoughts on how you can improve. You have as much time as you need to submit your work to me. All responses are sent to you via email within 24 hours of your initial submission. All submissions may be sent to ryanthiggins@gmail.com.

Before we begin

Here are a few tips to help you get the maximum benefit from our time together: 1. Please review my free videos on my YouTube account regarding how to properly compose your response (dont waste your time and money having me teach you what you can learn by yourself via these online tutorials!) 2. Be sure that any work you submit to me has been created under exam-like conditions. This means allotting yourself 20 minutes to respond to any Task 1 question and 40 minutes to any Task 2 question. 3. Although I accept scanned copies of written work, youll find my comments much easier to understand if you type your response. Now, without further ado,

Task 1 Questions (Academic)

Question 1 The following table from Statistics UK makes clear internet usage demographics in the United Kingdom. Write a brief report describing the trends.

Question 2 The following charts outline consumption differences between men and women surrounding Valentines Day-related purchases. Write a brief report of at least 150 words describing the information depicted here.

Question 3 The following charts depict the typical American diet in 1990 and 2005. Write a report for a university lecturer summarizing the information presented.

Question 5 The two charts show changes in the number of motor vehicle accidents in selected countries between 1997 and 2000, and the rate of deaths in motor vehicle accidents for those countries.

Question 6 The below chart illustrates marriage and divorce rates in the UK during the latter part of the twentieth century. Compose an article in at least 150 words outlining the trends depicted here.

Question 7 Below is a summary of train usage in the London Underground. Summarize the information presented for a university lecturer.

Task 1 Questions (General)

Question 1 You have had a bank account for a few years. Recently you received a letter from the bank stating that your account is $240 overdrawn and that you will be charged $70 which will be taken directly from your account. You know this information is incorrect. Write a letter to the bank. Explain what has happened and say what you would like them to do about it. You should write at least 150 words. Question 2 You have won a grant from the government entitling you to receive $40,000 to help fund a science project you have been working on with a small team. This money is key to the success of the project. Mrs. Tracey Polin, a government executive working in the Science and Research department of your countrys government, was instrumental in helping your team receive this money. Question 3 You have received notice that your application for a position with a company in your city has been rejected. The reason for this rejection is not entirely clear. The major requirements listed for the position include: having a degree in Computer Science having had at least 2 years of experience working at a high-tech firm being mobile and able to travel as part of the position You fulfill all three requirements and feel you were by far the best candidate for the position. Question 4 Your-have a full-time job and are also doing a part-time evening course. Task 2 Questions (Academic and General)

Question 1 - The age of information technology has taken a lot of people by surprise. While it has become a way of life for some, others know very little about it. Eventually we will have a polarised society and this will lead to serious social problems. Form an opinion based on the info above and write a well-reasoned essay. Question 2 - The expression Never, never give up means to keep trying and never stop working for your goals. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
