Push-ups and Sit-ups develop muscular strength and endurance of the arm, chest shoulder and trunk muscles. They also make up two of the three events on the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). Regular performance of Conditioning Drills 1 and 2 prepare the muscles for the challenges of these exercises. Performance of the push-up and sit-up drill (PSD) further prepares the Soldier for performing these exercises to time, as in the APFT.

Terminal Learning Objective

NOTE. Inform the students of the following Terminal Learning Objective requirements.
At the completion of this lesson, you [the student] will:

Action: Conditions:

Conduct Push-Up and Sit-Up Drill (PSD) and Practical Exercise (PE).
In a gymnasium or PRT field, given a TC 3-22.20, Army Physical Readiness Training, Master Fitness Trainer Course (MFTC) Course Management Plan (CMP), in designated physical training uniform.

Standards:
Conduct the Push-Up and Sit-Up Drill (PSD) Practical Exercise (Performance) IAW TC 322.20, Chapter 9

Safety Requirements

1. Safety is a major consideration when planning and evaluating PRT programs. Commanders should use the composite risk management process for all PRT activities to ensure they do not place their Soldiers at undue risk for injury or accident. The commander should address:

- Environmental conditions - Emergency procedures - Facilities - Differences in age - Gender - Level of conditioning of each Soldier in the unit

2. SafetyRequirements in a Classroom Setting:

Safety is of the utmost importance in any training environment. During the training process, Commanders will utilize the 5-Step Composite Risk Management process to determine the safest and most complete method to train. Every precaution will be taken during the conduct of training.

Safety is everyones responsibility to recognize, mitigate, and report hazardous conditions.

3. In a training environment, lead Instructors must perform a risk assessment in accordance with FM 5-19, Composite Risk Management. Leaders will complete a DA Form 7566 COMPOSITE RISK MANAGEMENT WORKSHEET during the planning and completion of each task and sub-task by assessing mission, enemy, terrain and weather, troops and support available-time available and civil considerations, (METT-TC).

NOTE: During MOPP training, leaders must ensure personnel are monitored for potential environmental injury. Local policies and procedures must be followed during times of increased heat category or freeze warning in order to avoid injury. Consider the MOPP work/rest cycles and water replacement guidelines IAW FM 3-11.4, NBC Protection, FM 311.5, CBRN Decontamination.

Risk Assessment Level

Ensure that MFTs are in the proper uniform. Leaders continue to monitor temperature and assess impact on unit & training. Conduct training in accordance with FJ Chart MFTI instructed annually on cold weather injury prevention and treatment. MFTIs will check weather conditions and heat category prior to conducting training event.

Leader Actions: MFTIs will ensure all MFTs conduct preparation drill prior to the execution of exercises. MFTs will ensure all MFTs conduct recovery drill after the execution of all exercises. MFTI will ensure all MFTs conduct preparation drill and recovery drill. NCOIC verifies placement of AED on training site. MFTIs will ensure all MFTs conduct all exercises IAW TC 3-22.20. MFTIs will enforce proper hydration and have Wet Bulb, Ice Sheets, and water available. MFTIs will ensure all MFTs conduct proper warm-up prior to the execution of exercises. MFTs will report any injuries to their MFTIs immediately. In the case of storm warning the MFTIs will take accountability and move the MFTs to the closest LPA
7

CLOSE SUPERVISION BY MFTI. MFTs have appropriate dry clothing. OIC and NCOIC have communications with Range control and Cadre on ground for Emergency Notification procedures. Leaders supervise mission rehearsal and execution to ensure standards are enforced. Leaders conduct spot checks, inspections, get sit reps, and provide close supervision MFTIs will ensure the wet bulb is operational and checked every hour to keep up with the correct heat category for the event. All hot weather injuries will be followed up with an LCIR to the Chain of Command. MFTIs will ensure adequate time will be given to eat all meals and drink fluids. MFTIs will adhere to work/rest cycles of continuous high heat categories for each training event.

Environmental Considerations

NOTE: Instructor should conduct a Risk Assessment to include Environmental Considerations IAW FM 3-34.5, Environmental Considerations {MCRP 4-11B}, and ensure students are briefed on hazards and control measures.

Individuals instructing this task must ensure they are familiar with TC 3-22.20, Appendix D, pages D-1 thru D-5, Environmental Considerations prior to training this task.

Evaluation
Skills and knowledge taught during this instruction are evaluated throughout the course and during the end of course performance evaluation.

Instructional Lead-in
Push-ups and sit-ups are fundamental movements that control individual body weight to initiate movement from a prone or supine position to a standing position.

SECTION III. PRESENTATION NOTE: A. Inform the students of the Enabling Learning Objective requirements. ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE ACTION: CONDITIONS: Conduct the PSD.

a. Push-ups and sit-ups develop upper body strength, endurance and mobility and specifically prepare Soldiers for APFT performance. Any level area of adequate size is satisfactory for conduct of the PSD. Soldiers will wear IPFU or ACUs and boots. PRT leaders will need a stopwatch to keep time for the sets of push-ups and sit-ups to be performed. For the most efficient instruction, the ideal unit size is one platoon. Larger units up to a battalion can successfully perform these drills if properly taught and mastered at the small unit level. The extended rectangular formation is prescribed.

b. A PRT leader and four AIs are needed to instruct and lead timed sets of push-ups and sit-ups. The leader must know how to teach these exercises. He must know the commands, formations, starting positions and how to effectively use AIs. Refer to TC 3-22.20, Chapter 9.

c. Push-ups and sit-ups lose much of their value unless performed exactly as prescribed. Precision should never be compromised for quantity of repetitions or speed of movement. Soldiers perform as many correct repetitions of push-ups and sit-ups as they can during the 30 second timed sets, progressing to 60 second timed sets. Soldiers that fail with time remaining in the timed set of pushups go to their knees and continue to perform the push-up in the six-point stance until time has expired within the timed set. Performing timed sets of push-ups and sit-ups integrates the components of strength, endurance and mobility while specifically preparing for success in performance of these APFT events. As with any activity, PRT leaders should perform the exercises with the Soldiers in order to determine the appropriate intensity of the PRT session.

NOTE: Instructor states, watch this demonstration. As the instructor explains the conduct of the PSD, AIs will demonstrate PSD performance.

d. The PSD demonstration is as follows:

(1) Demonstrators, POST. I will use the talk-through method of instruction. The Push-up and Situp Drill is conducted from the Extended Rectangular Formation. (PRT Leader gives the correct commands for the Extended Rectangular formation insures that the odd number of ranks face about for this event example 1st and 3rd squads).

(2) The first exercise of this Drill is The Push-up (demonstrators respond The Push-up). 1st and 3rd squads will conduct the event first. The 2nd and 4th squads will grade the event. The starting position is the position of attention. On the command, Starting Position, MOVE (the demonstrators that are conducting the push-ups moving into the front leaning rest position, the other demonstrators take a knee). The ranks that are conducting the event assume the front leaning rest position. On the command of execution, Get Set, GO,the rank that is grading the event will take a knee beside the Soldier performing the event at a 45 degree angle from the head looking across the body to ensure that the push-up is being preformed to standard. The Soldiers will perform this event for the stated time that the PRT Leaders has commanded. In the event that the Soldier cannot complete the push-up event, he will assume the six-point stance and complete the push-up until the time has expired. When the time has expired the PRT Leader will give the command, Position of Attention, MOVE, he then commands the second group to start the push-up event. 2nd and 4th squads will conduct the push-up while 1st and 3rd ranks will conduct the grading. This event is commanded and completed the same as before.

The Push-Up
10

(3) The second event of this Drill is The Sit-up (demonstrators respond The Situp). The odd numbers of ranks will perform the sit-up and the even number ranks will hold the feet for the time limit stated by the PRT Leader. When the first group is complete the second group will perform the sit-up in the same manner as the first group, as in the push-up.

The Sit-Up

(4) I will lead my demonstrators though one complete set of this event. The commands are as follows:
- The Push-up (demonstrators states The Push-up). The PRT Leader states which rank is conducting the event and states the time of the event.

- Starting Position, MOVE (demonstrators move into the scorer and starting positions for the push-up).

- Get Set, GO (demonstrators perform the push-up).

- STOP (demonstrators stop and await further instructions).

11

- Position of Attention, Move (demonstrators move to the position of attention).

- The Push-up (demonstrators state, The Push-up).

- Starting Position, MOVE (demonstrators change roles and move into the scorer and starting positions for the push-up).

- Get Set, GO (demonstrators perform the push-up).

- Position of Attention, Move (demonstrators move to the position of attention).

- The Sit-up (demonstrators state, The Sit-up). The PRT Leader states which rank is conducting the event the time of the event.

- Starting Position, MOVE (demonstrators move into the scorer and starting positions for the sit-up).
