Ref. No. MR/CDL/ENV/2010-11/ To, M/s. Chhattisgarh Distilleries Ltd. Village Khapri, Kumhari, Dist. Durg. Chhattisgarh - 490042 Subject: Proposal for Lagoon Sludge composting at C.D.L. Plant

Date:- 17/11/2010

INTRODUCTION: C.D.L. produces alcohol both from grain and molasses. Effluent from both the streams are different from chemical characteristic point of view (i.e. BOD, COD, T.S.S. etc.). C.D.L. has lagoons for storage of effluent. Grain based plant effluent contains lot of grain fibers in it. These fibers get settled at bottom of lagoon. When the same lagoon were used to store molasses based effluent, heavy reaction along with emission of volatile gasses was observed, resulting in very foul smell. This was because of the combination of fibers from grain effluent with high BOD and Nitrogen content from molasses effluent which gave rise to fastidious media for bacterial degradation, that produced volatile acids, C.D.L. was advised by Mantras to empty the lagoons and scrap off out the sludge to get rid of the foul smell. Mantras also advised to store both effluents separately in lagoons. Composting Of Lagoon Sludge:The scrapped of lagoon sludge contains good amount of fibers, organic matter, nitrogen, and yeast . In lagoon it has been only incompletely degraded by anaerobic fermentation. Therefore it has got lot of potential to get degrade by aerobic method to generate rich quality, fibrous and porous organic manure along with beneficial soil micro- organisms.
