LTHOUGHTucker and Shanan Phillips relocated to Lake Travis

less than a year ago, Tucker had a childhood connection to the
area as his God parents had a home on Murfin Lane, and he spent
many summers visiting them and swimming and fishing on Lake Austin.
Tuckers family lived in Houston, where his dad was a longtime high school
athletic director, and Shanan grew up in nearby Katy. Both of them were
college athletes; Tucker played football for Rice where he was a punter, and
Shanan played volleyball for the University of Southern Mississippi and
also was on the track team where she competed in the high jump. Although
12 Waterways | Fall 2013
their days of competing on the field are over, they share a commitment to
keeping fit that is symptomatic of their generation. They both love to run
and both go to the gym as well.
Indirectly, it was sport that brought them together, as Shanans sister
was dating (and later married) a fellow Owl teammate of Tuckers. Early
in their relationship, Tucker and Shanan decided they wanted to get out
of Houston. At the time, they were considering Austin and Denver. They
ended up in Denver, where Tucker got a job with Baxter Healthcare, a
corporation with a global presence in pharmaceuticals and medication
delivery systems, and Shanan took
a position as an elementary special
education teacher. They fell in love
with the mountains and spent 12
glorious years there. Almost a year
ago, Tuckers company transferred
him to Austin where he handles contract negotiations for major hospitals
throughout Texas. Although they miss
the mountains, they have reconnected
with some old high school friends and,
as Tucker said, This feels like home.
Shanan has a degree in special education and is a substitute teacher for
the Lake Travis Independent School
District. She hopes to go back as a fulltime teacher once 4-year old Raegan
starts kindergarten. Little Tuc is in the
first grade.
They truly represent the emerging
face of the new Lake Travis, one that
is exploding with an incoming tide of
young families.

IM A GYM RAT, a dancer, a bootcamper, a swimmer, a pilates
lover, a wannabe yogi.
Some people see a therapist, I exercise. Every cliche is true.
It quiets my mind and gives me a sense of peace. I am physically
stronger, more emotionally centered. Exercise gives me confidenceor at least the good posture and core muscles to fake it. Best
of all, it summons the energy I need to run around after my two
boys. Movement, sweating, an hour to myself, gives my life clarity.
But if theres one thing Im not, its someone who exercises
by herself. I have no desire to run for miles...alone. Or do a fitness DVD...in my basement. And the people-watching in gyms is
worth the membership-fee alone. The joy I see on the face of the
guy air-drumming next to me on the bike, determination from an
older woman in my early-morning bootcamp, the stress that palpably leaves the room in yoga. I want to be with people andas
I get older and more prone to injuryI want to exercise smartly,
with instructors who can guide and inspire me. If you let them,
and if you work really hard, these people will improve your life in
unimaginable ways.
True, I probably should see a therapist, but then where would
my air-drumming skills be?

growth of an incredibly vibrant and diverse yoga community here

dumbbells), Balance sets itself apart from other studios with a warm
and experienced staff of instructorsmany of whom were so inspired
as students at Balance that they decided to train and become part of
the Balance family of teachers.
I fell in love with hot yoga and everyone at Balance. Nani and
all the instructors at Balance are incredibly unique in their
teaching styles but each one inspires and guides my practice
like the masters they are. If I had to boil it down I would say
that there isnt anything in my life that yoga doesnt enhance

N A FRIDAYin the spring of 1994, Rock and Barbara Onstad drove up

from Houston for a weekend visit with friends at their home on Eck Lane
overlooking Lake Travis. The couple found the setting positively enchanting and, while sitting on the patio overlooking the lake, their host happened to mention that the home next door was for sale. By the end of the following week, Rock and
Barbara Onstad were its new owners. During the course of that weekend, the couple
determined to move their family to the magical German cottage-style home designed
and built by David Shiflet, of Shiflet Group
Architects and make a new life for themselves
on the south shore of Lake Travis. Rock would
shutter his thriving law practice in Houston

the house dropped down a steep cliff to the lake, and creating a level space for a back garden was one among many landscape challenges. Palo Verde Design brought in over 1,000
yards of soil to build up a curving expanse of space from which to enjoy the stunning view.
Connelly is a stickler about providing quality soils at the right depth. Plants will not thrive
unless they have at least six inches of good soil, he notes.
Patios and walkways designed with Lueder stone, as well as native stones unearthed
from the excavation work around the property, provide definition and hard accents for the
space. Once the foundation for the design of the garden was complete, the stage was set for
the selection of flowering plants and shrubs that would best create the magic of the cottage-style garden envisioned. Connelly planted Zoysia grass, a grass that produces a thick,
dense, cushiony turf that is heat tolerant and requires less water than most cool-season turf
grasses. Velvety Lambs ear and foxtail fern line pathways while flowering ginger, antique
roses, firecracker fern and passion flower, with its deep purple blossom and sweet, wild
fruit, provide seasonal color.
Palo Verde Design Group is a boutique landscape company that has carved out a niche
market among high-end residential customers who take the pleasure of their gardens seriously. There are over 1,000 contractors under landscape design in the phone books and
possibly three times as many doing business that are not listed. My goal from the beginning, explains Connelly, was to distinguish Palo Verde Design from the crowd. One of

especially those hosted by my clients in a garden I designed and installed! When I asked Larry why
he decided to advertise in Waterways, he had two comments: #1) My clients read Waterways.
#2) It gives me credibility. Im not just another guy with a truck and a transient crew of day laborers.
The Onstads appreciate their chickens! A lot of love went into naming them: Chicken and Dumplings,
Chicken Tetrazzini, Chicken la King, Sweet & Sour Chicken, etc! And their rooster adores his harem!
Knowing that you cannot build a name for yourself if the lavish garden you designed and installed is trashed by improper maintenance six
months later, Palo Verde Design Group has a critical maintenance component. If we build it, we want to take care of it, explains Connelly.
Most of Connellys clients recognize the difficulty of maintaining their
investment once installed. A spectacular garden requires constant
attention: pruning, fertilizing, pest control and irrigation maintenance
are among the endless chores imposed by a garden. Many homeowners dont have the knowledge, the time or the interest to assume these
burdens.
For the homeowner looking to save money at the end of a pricey custom build or home purchase, an expensive investment in landscaping
is frequently deferred until a later time. Connelly is often approached
by homeowners who, several years later, are ready to fix a landscape
that reflects poorly on the value of their home.
In addition to building a successful business model in the crowded field of landscape design, Larry Connelly has also invented an
ingenious product that eliminates all the headaches associated with
container gardening. Designed to fit pots of various sizes, the simple
product uses a specially treated plastic fabric that serves as a barrier to
prevent soil particles from clogging the gravel or rock used for drainage. It drains 120 gallons per minute, eliminates hyper-saturation and

LARRY CONNELLY grew up in Houston but spent a lot of time in
Lakeway during the summers at his familys lake house on Sunfish. In
high school, he took an after school job at a nursery and really took
to it. After two years at UT Austin, Connelly realized that his true
calling was to work with plants and landscapes. He moved to Florida
and enrolled in Lake City School for Golf Course and Landscape
Construction and, after graduating, got a job with a well-known landscape company that worked with prestigious clients in Palm Beach
and Boca Raton. After that, he moved to Atlanta where he worked for
Alfred L. Simpson & Co, a company with a big commercial division,
supplemented by high-end residential that, at the time, was doing
$12 million in business annually. Connellys assignment was with the
team responsible for landscaping the Carter Library. Armed with a
wealth of experience, he returned to Austin in 1995 and shortly thereafter established Palo Verde Design Group.

HE RESERVEat Lake Travis spoiled and delighted its homeowners and members of the Cypress Club by treating them to
a private concert by legendary singer/songwriter Clint Black.
Seated at tables, in lawn chairs and on the grass in front of the stage, guests
enjoyed barbeque and drinks while waiting for the performance to begin.
As the twilight deepened, a hush of anticipation fell over the crowd as they
waited to hear that distinctive voice deliver some of his iconic hits. Clint
Black has an easy manner onstage, telling funny stories and anecdotes
about his experiences performing and with other country singers. Brandi
Nellis, who was taking pictures for Waterways, positioned herself on the
ground just a few feet from Clint and was
preparing to take a shot when he stopped

HE 4TH ANNUALMarble Falls Soapbox Classic, an Adult Soapbox Derby, took

over Marble Falls Historic Main Street District from June 1416. The three-day
racing rally featured a Show and Shine parade, a Derby Hat contest, great food,
live music, a street dance and another great collection wheeled contraptions whose roaring
descent down the Third Street slope was intended by their owners to produce shock and
aweor possibly, shock and laughter!
There were some wobblers and some spinouts and collisions but no serious injuries over
the three day and nights of racing.
Shannon Heep, Executive Director of the Marble Falls Soapbox Classic, can be happy with
the continued growth and popularity of the event. The carnival setting provided just the right
atmosphere to balance long-standing rivalries and a ferociously American spirit of competition with good-natured camaraderie. A true blast from the past.

WITH THE HUGE NUMBER of people from this area who flock to the California coast in the
summer, it really should be declared a part of Austins ETJ! It has been seven years since Shelia and
Bill have taken a solo vacation without their two sons, so this summer they headed out for a romantic
trip to Carmel and Big Sur, entrusting the boys and the dogs to the care of Shelias sister Vickie. They
landed in San Jose and then drove an hour and a half to the luxurious Bernardos Lodge in Carmel
Valley where they stayed for three nights. 15 minutes inland from the coast, Carmel Valley is just
beyond the Pacific fog line, so the area has warmer temperatures and lots of sunshine. The photos tell

EWLY MARRIEDand pregnant with our first, we swore

we wouldnt lose ourselves. We would nurture our marriage
the way we would nurture our children! But time being
scarce and the village being out-of-state, nurturing a marriage with mac
n cheese and cartoons doesnt exactly spell romance.
Five years and two kids later, it was time to go beyond date night
and enter the realm of a getaway. With only 48 hours to live the dream,
we chose Napa. Although it was right down the road, with two small,
loud children, it always seemed tantalizingly out of reach. We decided
to live it up at the luxurious Calistoga Ranch.
Arriving Friday afternoon, we were greeted with a glass of
Chardonnay and the keys to our peaceful retreat, the Oak Creek Lodge.
The space was exceptionally detailed and I felt spoiled by the outdoor
shower, private hot tub on the deck, and outdoor fireplace. What I
heard: the birds, the breeze. What I did not hear: kids screaming, jumping on the bed, things breaking.
That night we went into the nearby town of St. Helena and enjoyed
cocktails at the mellow French Blue, followed by dinner at Press, a dark,
sexy steakhouse with fantastic people-watching. We fell asleep that
night in sheets unstained by Desitin, with the blissful knowledge that
we could rise at whatever hour felt right to our bodies.

Saturday was a day filled with nothing. There were

long silences and uninterrupted conversations and
music and books and newspapers. We had the gym to
ourselves and a late, sumptuous breakfast alone. The
beauty of Calistoga Ranch is that, essentially, the place
is yours.
If you have time, there are hiking trails, bicycles
and a bocce court. Calistoga Ranch is even a member
of the Mercedes Benz Drive Program, which lets you
explore Napa in the newest modelsgratis!on a first
come first serve basis. But none of that was as enticing
as sitting on a chaise lounge with a frosty beverage by
the pool. I languidly watched a pregnant lady with her
toddler before putting in my headphones and looking
at my watch. Yes, it was nap time. MY nap time.
That evening, we dined at Calistoga Ranchs The
Lakehouse, available only to guests and members. Like
everything else at the resort, it is intimate and casually
elegant. The food was delicious, the wine pairings even
more so, and sitting under the stars, listening to the music drifting
up from the wedding reception in the private wine cave, we toasted
our 6th anniversary.
The morning of our departure, I made sure to book a spa treatment before returning to the utter chaos that awaited me. I opted
for the Calistoga Ranch Mud Wrap, 90 minutes of total heaven
that concluded with a full body Swedish massage. My exhausted
skin refreshed, the ache in my arms and back from carrying a
babyalmost gone.
Needless to say, it was in a trance-like state that we packed our
belongings and headed back to reality. The weekend was everything I had hoped. Time alone: it needs to be an annual pilgrimage.
I felt rested, reconnected, andafter a fuel stop for burgers and
shakes at Gotts Roadside in St. Helenaready for re-entry.

breast cancer screening, education and medical services as well
as financial and emotional support. In fact, 75 % of the money
raised each year is put to work right here in Bastrop, Caldwell,

everyone affected by this deadly disease. The remaining funds
are dedicated to global research.

Komens second annual pink soiree on Saturday, May 4, 2013
at Shoal Crossing. The event, which is Komen Austins secondlargest fundraiser after the annual Race for the Cure, raised
more than $300,000, which will be invested in local breast
health programs and research grants.
The evening started with a VIPink Cocktail Reception
presented by Lexus of Austin and closed with dancing and
desserts at Club PINK! presented by Microsoft Austin.

N MAY 19,Crosswater Yacht Club held an on-the-water mega-party to celebrate its

grand opening. An estimated crowd of between 1,200-1,400 people checked out the
new, state-of-the-art deep water marina, enjoyed barbeque by Trashed and Burned and
music by KC Rocks.

According to General Manager Roland Adams, in the two and a
half months since its opening, 140 slips (out of total of 243) have
been leased. We are 56% occupied, noted Adams. We believe
our presence opened a door for folks who otherwise wouldnt be
on the water, due to the drought. All of us at Suntex Marinas and
Crosswater Yacht Club want to sincerely thank everyone in the community who came out to our Grand Opening Celebration, said Chris

Diana Saadeh and Josephine Delooze are not only sisters and best friends
but they are also business partners. They are both very well known in the
Lakeway community for two well-loved enterprises, Caf Lago and the
Market at Lakeway that they owned and operated for many years. Josephine
opened the Lakeway Market in Lakeway Village in 2000 and moved it to
a beautiful new building built especially for it on the corner of Lakeway
Boulevard and Lohmans Crossing in 2006. Diana bought Caf Lago 12
years ago and owned it for nine years before she sold it to her daughter,
Carlene Rubio and her niece Miranda Valenta, Josephines daughter.
The latest business venture that absorbs the time and energies of these
two talented entrepreneurs is Carmelas, the Italian restaurant Diana and
Josephine opened two years ago at the intersection of Hamilton Pool Road
and Rural Road 12. The owner of the center actually sought them out and

Saturday, June 1st with a Grand Opening Celebration. Dennis Haire provided the barbeque,

youve experienced it: blanking on a piece of information you know
you should know, but dont.
Age-related cognitive decline is as real as it is natural. Like the rest of your
body, brain tissueespecially in the hippocampus, which processes, files and
accesses memoriesdegrades over time. Today, 5.4 million Americans suffer
from Alzheimers disease. Thanks to aging Baby Boomers, by 2050, research
suggests the total number will swell to nearly 20 million. Is society prepared
to carelet alone payfor so many people? And what of these people, themselves? Paying for care is one thing; needing it is another.
Luckily, neural scientists are starting to think differently about thinking,
shifting attention to the profound impact lifestyle can have on brain function.
Your brain is an organ, just like the heart or lungs, says Craig MacFarland,
PhD, a cognitive function and memory specialist. MacFarland has conducted
neuropsychological assessments and developed rehabilitation programs for
hundreds of patients at the VA Hospital in Boston. Overall health greatly
affects brain health, he says, and that, in turn, greatly affects memory. For
example, research suggests being overweight doubles Alzheimers risk; obesity quadruples it. Diabetes can speed brain atrophy. So can high blood pressure. In fact, a host of medical conditionsfrom sleep apnea to depression
to everyday stressseems to affect brain health. We see a lot of cognitive
decline simply related to cardiovascular inactivity, MacFarland explains.

The brains just not getting enough blood.
The good news: while bad health habits can impair cognitive function,
healthy lifestyle choices can help. As it turns out, the best remedy for fighting late-life Alzheimers is midlife intervention, although you can tone your
brain at any age. Anything youd do to improve cardiovascular health also
works for memory, he says, touting the old standbys of physical exercise
even modest physical exerciseand diet. MacFarland cautions, however, that
theres no such thing as brain food, no matter how many omega-3 fatty
acids it contains.
More and more, scientists see the brain as a muscle, growing and shrinking in response to activity level. Its all about strengthening the hippocampus, MacFarland says. In addition to physical exercise, mental workouts
such as reading, engaging in hobbies or learning new skillslater in life, this
employs especially complex cognitive processesplumps the hippocampus,
stimulates neurons and boosts brainpower.
But the most effective mental exercise? Social engagement. You cant
believe the cognitive gymnastics it takes to interact with other people,
MacFarland says. To him, this is far more effective than any brain fitness
games on your smartphone. Those benefits are mostly task-specific, he
says. Youll get better at that particular game, but it wont translate into the
real worldnot unless you play Tetris for a living.

Womens Health PT focuses on females with a variety of conditions: Pelvic

How Color and Art Affect Stress and Aging

NE OF THElargest factors influencing health and aging is

stress. There are many ways to reduce stress, including meditation, exercise and diet. Now, extensive scientific research also
shows that the use of specific colors and artwork can immediately lower
stress, stimulate mental function and slow the aging process. Not only that,
it can also help lower your taxes!
STRESS SPEEDS UP THE AGING PROCESS

Stress elevates cortisol levels, leading to obesity, hypertension, thyroid dysfunction, acne, reduced cognitive ability, depression, anxiety, muscle and
bone weakness, menstrual cycle irregularities and low sex drive in men.
Stress is also one of the major factors in aging. Stress shortens telomeres, the protective end-caps of DNA involved in aging. As your cells age,
the telomeres get shorter, until the cell can no longer survive. Shortened
telomeres are associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental
impairment and cancer.
ART AND COLOR REDUCE STRESS AND HEAL

Specific colors and certain types of artwork can effect positive physiological
changes, according to Leanne Venier, a scientist, engineer, and color and
light expert. Venier, a former acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner, now lectures at major medical centers, teaching medical practitioners about the healing effects of color, light and art, sharing her extensive
scientific research on the topic as well as her practical color healing experience. For example, she says, simply staring at the color BLUE has been
scientifically shown to have an immediate calming effect, lowering blood
pressure and heart rate.
Stress reduction techniques, like staring at calming colors in artwork,
can actually slow the rate of telomere shortening, having an anti-aging
effect. On stressful days, I stare at some of my favorite artwork by Leanne
Venier, who is also an international award-winning artist. I initially discovered Ms. Veniers work while doing a Google search for new, science-based
healing methods and was immediately drawn to the colors and compositions in her paintings. I was fascinated by her artwork and then also by the
science of color and light therapy that she teaches about, in addition to all
of the future potential for medical applications. While finalizing plans on a
custom commission painting from Venier, I have saved some of her Free
Art Screensavers (available at www.LeanneVenier.com) on my desktop and
use them for daily doses of color therapy.
Shadows Journey (pictured above) consists of soothing indigo and blue
hues which provide an immediate calming effect. Ms. Veniers abstracts
arouse a deep emotional and mental response, as well as a physiological
response that has benefits beyond that of just aesthetic pleasure and may
even help you live longer.
NASA research supports my own and other viewers responses to
Veniers artwork, showing that artwork images that are the most healing
resemble landscapes or water that draw a viewer into the painting via a
sense of depth, whereas images with people, animals and buildings are less
suitable for healing purposes.
COLOR AND ART FOR INCREASED ENERGY

Venier says, Color can also have stimulating effects on memory, alertness
and cognitive patterns which all decline with age. She adds, Research
shows that staring at the color RED increases heart rate, blood flow and
energy, similar to caffeine.
When I need to feel energized, I stare at another Venier painting,
Pulsating Luminosity. The bright reds and yellows increase my alertness
and ability to concentrate.

You can dramatically slow down your own aging process by having healing artwork in your home or office. For calming and stress reducing effects,

EXACTLY THREE weeks from the day he so proudly carried the American
flag as part of the Fourth of July Honor Guard down Lakeway Boulevard in
the festive July 4th parade, Lakeway Police Sgt. Chris Doles was killed in a
fatal motor vehicle accident on RR 620 early on the morning of July 25 on
his way to work. On that very day Sgt. Chris Doles would have celebrated
his two year anniversary with the Lakeway Police Department. Instead, the
Department was forced to deal with the stunning blow of his tragic loss. Sgt.
Doles is survived by his wife, Kristen, four children and one grandchild.
In a quote given to KXAN reporters Sophia Beausoleil and Ignacio Garcia,
Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said, He was a cops cop. He came from
a strong tactical background. He was very intelligent of the street, understood what was expected of him. He was reasonable in his efforts and very
empathetic to people he dealt with.
Sgt. Doles was born in Nashville, Ark. and graduated from Snyder High
School in Snyder, Texas, about 45 miles southeast of Lubbock, Texas. After
serving as a sergeant in the Texas Army National Guard, he graduated from
the Waco Police Academy and began a career in law enforcement. He joined
the Waco Police Department in January 1990 where he attained the rank of
sergeant and served until May 2009. He earned master police officer certification in 2005. Sgt. Doles was a police officer for the Jerrell Police Department
from December 2010 to July 2011 and began as an officer with the Lakeway
Police Department on July 25, 2011. In September 2012, he was promoted to
the rank of sergeant. Sgt. Doles was a member of Lakeway Honor Guard and
also received a Meritorious Service Medal at the Lakeway Police Department
and Lakeway Police Foundations annual gala in December 2012.

dinner included Chief Art Acevado of the Austin Police Department, Doug Floyd, APDs master canine handler and trainer and his police dog, Rocky. Proceeds from the dinner benefit the
K-9 unit and will be used to support the training required for both the canine and its partner,
Officer Sam Smith.
In other news, the Lakeway Police Department is preparing to host the fourth annual Lakeway
Public Safety Day, one of the largest events of its kind in Central Texas. A vast armada of police
cars and motorcycles, SWAT trucks, helicopters, ambulances and fire trucks will assemble on
Sept. 7 at the Lake Travis Educational Development Center, 607 RR 620 N., in Lakeway next
to Lake Travis Elementary School. The free family-friendly event is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The public safety agencies represented not

ATERWAYS Winter 2012 issue featured Talaya Frazier and

the foundation she established to help children suffering from
rare, undiagnosed or acute medical conditions. Talaya was
inspired to establish the foundation by her own daughter Cheyannas threeyear struggle to recover from a failure to thrive condition. The foundation raises money to assist families with expenses not covered by insurance.
Perhaps more powerful than the financial contribution, Talaya has enlisted
high profile athletes to dedicate a marathon run or other competition to the
individual children they champion, connecting the grueling training athletes experience as they prepare for competition with the physical struggles
sick children face as they fight their own battles against their illnesses.
What the foundation offers is hope, help and empowerment to cross their
finish lines to recovery.
It began relatively modestly, when Talaya decided to dedicate her 2012
Boston Marathon to then seven-year old Skylar Skalle, who fell ill with
a strep infection that settled in her hip, resulting in septic shock and the
necrosis of the soft tissue of the hip. (Read Skylars story in Waterways
Spring 2013 issue online.) Talaya was joined by world-class long distance
runner, Desire Ficker. That inspirational story can be read in the Winter
2012 issue of Waterways at waterwaysmagazine.com. In 2013, however,
10 Athlete Ambassadors ran in the Boston Marathon for 10 Austin children. They are pictured in the upper left photo. The foundation has added
Cheyannas Champions 4 Children (CC4C) to its name. And 10 Athlete
Ambassadors have already committed to run the 2014 Boston Marathon for
the children they champion.
In a new initiative, CC4C contacted Athletic Directors at high schools
in each of their 10 childrens districts to ask them to allow these children to
become honorary members of a high school team. The sports preferences
of the children are as varied as they are and include football, soccer, cheer,
volleyball, golf, baseball and basketball. Every school contacted has agreed
to become a Champions 4 Children team for the 2012-2014 season. Being
part of these teams will provide an uplifting source of support for these
children that will serve as a welcome distraction from the endless doctor
visits, treatments and hospital stays. Each child is introduced to the team
at the beginning of the season, and they are given team paraphernalia to
reinforce the fact that they are part of the team. The children are invited to
a minimum of three team gatherings (practices, award banquets, pre-game
dinners, pep rallies, etc). They will be provided with a special seat at home
games so that they may watch their team, when their health allows, and
their presence will be announced before the game whenever possible and
practical.
On September 22, a CC4C 2.62 Mini-Marathon will be held at the Hill
Country Galleria. All the participating high school teams and booster clubs
will be in charge of manning a water/cheer station honoring their child. At
the post-race celebration ceremony, each team will announce their child as
an honorary member. Hopefuel for life.

AKE TRAVISChristmas Hope is a local non-profit that raises money to help support wounded
soldiers receiving treatment at the San Antonio Military Medical Center and their families. The
average stay at the San Antonio Military Medical Center for a wounded soldier is a staggering
two and a half years, a stay during which they endure a seemingly unending series of operations and
rehabilitative treatments. As Brigadier General, Retired Rick Zehrer noted in his introductory remarks,
the families of these wounded soldiers travel to San Antonio to be with their loved ones during the long
recovery, quitting their jobs, leaving their homes, pulling children out of their schools. They often have few
financial resources to help them through this difficult time. Through the Air Warrior Courage Foundation,
Lake Travis Christmas Hope provides grants, usually given at Christmas time, to assist these families with
their daunting financial challenges.
Supporters of this Christmas in July benefit
at the Lake Travis Event Center enjoyed gourmet
refreshments donated by HEB Four Points, Artisan
Bistro and Circle C Catering. The performance of
a 1940s USO-style show by the AKA Vocal Show
Group brought back many memories to attendees
that included several WWII veterans.

Before They Start

ED BYovergrown brush, this summers Yarnell Hill fire in

Arizona not only destroyed more than 100 homes; it also took the
lives of 19 firefighters. But some people, including Texas A&M
Forest Service Firewise Communities Liaison Patrick Allen, believe this
type of senseless loss can be prevented with a little education, a little teamwork and a lot of chainsaws.
This past June, Allen addressed a special Wildfire Awareness Town
Hall meeting to celebrate Lakeways official recognition as a National Fire
Protection Associations Firewise Community, a neighborhood action program to reduce threats posed by brush, grass and forest fires. In fact, it was
a milestone for both the program and the city, as the city became the 900th
at-risk community nationwide (60th in Texas) to participate in Firewise.
It all comes down to learning to live with wildfires, said Allen in a
30-minute discussion about community wildfire preparedness. Just like
tornados, hurricanes or flooding, youre not going to stop themyou have
to prepare. What puts Lakeway at particular wildfire risk? For one, like all
of West Texas, Lakeway features whats known as a fire-adapted ecosystem.
Wildfires have always occurred as a natural part of the local environment.
In fact, Texas early explorers note following burn scars as a useful means
of navigation.
But in the last 100 years or so, as people moved into rural areas and
heavier grasses and trees began to proliferatethis fuel loading can produce flames 10-15 highthe risk, intensity and cost of wildfires have skyrocketed. People keep describing every season as a career fire season, then
say the same thing next season, Allen said, explaining that West Texas
happens to be mired in year 17 of a 30-year drought cycle.
Now add the steady encroachment of civilization into formerly wild or
agricultural lands, leading to areas called the Wildland Urban Interface,
where combustible fuels meet human improvements. Fires that were once
allowed to burn out now must be fought to save property and lives. You
cant stop the fire, but you can reduce the intensity, the damage and the
danger.
Spurred by recent Bastrop, Spicewood and Steiner Ranch fires, Lakeway
reached out to Allen and Firewise. We just make assessments and give recommendations, he said. Its all up to the community after that.
The Firewise team studied 15 distinct areas of human-urban interface in
Lakeway, looking at vegetation (types, thickness, proximity to escape and
firefighting equipment routes), terrain features, water sources and human
habitation. They also identified particularly at-risk locations: heavily-wooded, steep-sloped or rough terrain areas, as well as those abutting Balcones
Wildlife Refuge, where wildfire embers can ignite other fires miles away.
Firewise then laid out an action plan combining education, volunteerism and community engagement. First business: reducing fuel load
by trimming trees, cutting grassif its brown, cut it downand properly disposing of debris. This led to Lakeways first Annual Firewise Field
Day, this past January in Sailfish Park. Lakeways Firewise Committee also
enlisted the Boy Scouts, who held three of their own fuel reduction workdays in Hamilton Greenbelt and the Lakeway MUD Tract.
While Lakeways recognition as a Firewise Community marks a great
stride forward for wildfire awareness, theres still work to be done. Allen
encouraged the city to continue to build, widen and maintain trails, pathways and other firebreaks. For individual homeowners, he recommended
removing combustible material within 30 feet of the house and planting
succulents or other vegetation with high water content. Lastly, Allen suggested identifying any resident who might need help in an evacuation.
Most importantly, establish an education program for new homeowners, he said. The success of the program depends on community participationthe whole community.

HE WOMENS CLUBof Greater Lakeway closed the door on another very successful year with an
event at the Lakeway Resort and Spa on May 20. Each of the Clubs special-interest groups displayed
materials and talked to prospective members about their groups activities over coffee in the lobby
before the meeting. In her remarks, outgoing President Nancy Clayton acknowledged the importance of these
groups. The range of our groups activities is as diverse as our membership. We have 25 special-interest groups,
including nine book clubs, cancer support, opera, day trips, gardening, investments and many more. In this way,
members can pursue hobbies or interests in a smaller group setting where friendships are more easily made.
The luncheon began with President Nancy Claytons personal welcome to six new members and her acknowledgment of the two tables of former presidents and their past service to the Club. In her farewell address, President
Clayton recalled her year and described it as a cloud of memories encompassing the warmth of community.
She applauded the service of the outgoing board and thanked them for their support. They were a perfect team,
and I so appreciate their efforts. She introduced the new executive committee and urged each member to lead
with clarity of vision.
In-coming President Jane Benasutti presented Clayton with a crystal
gavel, a gift of appreciation for her outstanding year of service. In her own
remarks, Benasutti affirmed her personal leadership goals for the coming
year. These include: to strive for excellence; to be the ultimate buck stops
here leader; to maintain composure under fire and to make all feel welcome.
We all know the secret reason why Lakeway is considering building
a convention center. Without doubt, it is to accommodate the mushrooming membership of the WCGL, now more than 470! Membership
in Womens Club is open to women living in Lakeway, the Lakeway ETJ,
and The Hills. Dues are $30 annually. For membership information,

ANCE INSTITUTEPerformance Academy and Street Heat recently

attended Stage One Nationals in Arlington, Texas. Their performances
at Stage One Nationals represented the culmination of their 2012-2013
competition season, the third year under the direction of Linda Holland and Lindsay
Brewster. In three short years Dance Institutes dancers have achieved unparalleled
success and numerous awards at Regional competitions and conventions. Senior
dancer, Dannon OBrien competed at New York City Dance Alliance Regionals in
Houston where he was named NYCDA Outstanding Dancer and earned a scholarship to compete in the New York City Dance Alliance Nationals. At Nationals, he was
awarded over $150,000 in college scholarships. Dannon has accepted the scholarship
to Manhattan Marymount where he will begin attending classes on September 3rd.
Following the National competition, the top eight dances are chosen to compete
in the Stage One Shoot Out. Street Heats JESTERS and MOVE A LITTLE
FASTER were chosen in the Junior division and BETA and FORGET ME
NOT were chosen in the Teen division. DI proudly took the runner up place
for MOVE A LITTLE FASTER, choreographed by Gay Pollock, and FORGET
ME NOT, choreographed by Joey Arrigo, took the top honors winning the
Teen Shoot Out Championship.
Other outstanding achievements were racked up by Laura Parrish and
Dannon OBrien who won the Stage One Star Award, and Nick Schroeder
who won a half scholarship to The One Dance Intensive. In addition, DIPA
won numerous team awards for Technical excellence, Best Choreography,
Best Showmanship, Most Intense, Best Costume and the Diva Award.
