This introductory course provides an opportunity to tackle theories from various branches of communication, including interpersonal, group/organizational, rhetorical, mass and cultural. It is designed to to encourage students to give critical consideration to the place of theory within the communication studies discipline and everyday life. The course explores a variety of experiential learning approaches. GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVE: At the end of the course, students understand the value of a communication theory and know how to apply it in their daily lives and some of their communication studies. SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 5. Understand the meaning of communication as defined by the various communication theories; Analyze the different communication theories based in contexts and/or traditions; Conceive varied ways of evaluating effectiveness of selected campaigns or performances with the use of communication theories; Appreciate the value of communication theories in daily interaction by deliberately examining typical home or school conversations; Engage in a variety of activities that will further enhance interpersonal relationships in organizations and society as a whole; Utilize communication concepts creatively and effectively to foster understanding of social responsibility.

Class Participation The student is expected to read the assigned theories before the class so as to participate in the discussion. Moreover, since this is a communication class, the student is encouraged to communicate through all channels available to them. Academic dishonesty Plagiarism is unacceptable for any research work and will be sanctioned according to the provisions of the student manual. Deadlines Deadlines are discussed and agreed upon with the students at the beginning of the semester. Student work submitted after the agreed upon deadlines CANNOT get a grade higher than 2.0.
