My First Doctor
by Clydene Overbey The very first doctor I remember going to in my very young years was Dr. Gibbons. Now he was quite a sight, very tall and kind of bent over with age probably. He had a lot of silver hair and a handle bar mustache. I remember thinking he had the longest feet Id ever seen. I think he smoked a pipe and it hung out of his mouth the whole time, at least thats how I remember it. Wonder what people would say about that now? Ive always loved the smell of a pipe. When he got too old his son stepped in and he also smoked a pipe. I was scared out of my gourd of him. I mean shaking scared. His office was way up high as I remember it. I dont know if it was second or third floor, but I do know there was no elevator and it seemed like hundreds of steps up there. It was a very narrow passageway dark and musty. It was hard to walk up there if you were well and almost impossible if you were sick. I remember my poor parents carrying me and Norman up those steep stairs and wonder how the heck they did it. As I look back I just cant conceive of me having to walk up there now. How in the world did older sick people manage? As I said, this is my memory of my first visits to the doctor. My grown up mind may have made it worse. Remember those big long sticks doctors stuck down your throat to hold your tongue down? I hated those things. Every time Dr. Gibbons came at me with one of them, Id start fighting his hand. He was gentle and calm with me and soothed me down, but I still hated gagging on that thing. He looked at my throat, my ears, took my temp, and listened to my heart. Then he would go back into a little room and rummage around for a while. I knew what he was doing and I knew what it meant for me. He had his own pharmacy in the back as lots of doctors did then. When he came out he always had the same three things, (at least thats how I remember it.) There would be a small white envelope with tiny pink pills in it. A bottle with something pink and milky in it, and another bottle with red medicine in it. Then I would usually get a shot in my hip. Ouch! Usually he said it was a cold and sore throat. I never heard of the flu then. Hmmmmmm! It cost $5 to go to the doctor then and that included the medicine. My goodness but things have sure changed now. I had to go a lot because I seemed to always have that dreaded sore throat. I was and am one of those weird people that would rather go to the dentist than go to the medical doctor. Luke 5:17 - And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was [present] to heal them.

By Kendall Frazier I hope everyone had a safe and fun Labor Day weekend! We had lunch at my Grandma Fays and Aunt Rose Campbells on Labor Day. Those attending were Fay and Rose Campbell, Mike, Loretta, Duane, Terri, Austin, Bethany, Isaac and Kendall Frazier, Joyce Aldridge and Tony and Alanna Contreras. On Saturday, Mike, Loretta, Duane and Isaac Frazier, Joyce Aldridge, Tony and Alanna Contreras, and I went to visit with my grandparents, Darrell and Wanda Barnes, at Centerville. The Shores, Johnson and King Reunion was held Saturday, Aug. 31, at Shores Lake Pavilion. Leroy and Trina Campbell and Pam and Treve went to North Dakota this weekend. Continue prayers for the Campbell, Howard and Lee families. Dusty Lee, Dawsen Lee and Caleb Campbell lost their lives in a tragic car accident on Aug. 22. Their funeral service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Ozark High School Activities Center with burial in Highland Cemetery. Caleb was the son of Chad Campbell and Michelle Howard Lee, and the grandson of Curtis and Jane Campbell. Curtis is my mothers first cousin. Please pray for Monica Carpenter for a full recovery. She is in the hospital in ICU. I still have four kittens that need to go to a good home. If you want one, contact me. My number is 479-209-2971. My e-mail is Kfrazier_72949@ya hoo.com. Clayton and Kelly (Campbell) Miller received a lot of gifts at their wedding shower last Saturday. I received a letter from Cleo Kaylor of Van Buren. Cleo is the daughter of the late Hiram and Narcie (Boen) Ellison. Hiram was a half-brother of my great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Ellison) Henry Danner. She sent me information about Thomas Ellison (my great-great-great-grandfather) and the descendants of Hiram Ellison. Ellis Whitesell is out of the hospital and home. Continue to keep him in your prayers.

By Crickett Pullen Still no word on who took our gate. I hope they enjoy it. But you know what they say about it coming back and biting you in the rear. I had a good visit by phone with Ruby Spencer. It seems she isnt having very much luck with her feet these days. She messed one up by falling off the porch and a couple of weeks later she missed a step in the pavement and broke the other one, so shes on crutches. Ruby, you better slow down and take care of yourself. I went to the doctor with Chasity Wednesday and we got to hear the babys heartbeat. I cried. I can hardly wait until we find out what its going to be. Im rooting for a boy. Zolliecoffer, manager of the Ozark Water Department. He said other customers in the area may experience low water pressure during this time. Any customers having questions are asked to call 667-3554. Linda, Im glad you, Glenda, Betty and John made it back home safe from your trip to Iowa. I have come to the conclusion that if you dont have a home-grown tomato for a tomato and mayo sandwich a plain mayo sandwich is almost as good. I got a coon that is getting obese on cat food at my house. Hes as big around as he is long. Mr. Skunk dropped by for a visit Thursday night and let me know he was here. There is nothing worse than getting woke up by the stench of ode de skunk. I nearly keeled over the next morning when I walked to the door. Billy, Chasity and I went out to Horsehead Lake Friday afternoon so they could see it empty. Im amazed at the weird stuff that you can find that was under all that water. I hope everyone had a safe Labor Day. Summer is supposed to be over. Wonder if the weather knows that? I gotta get ready for church. I will talk again later.
