Functional Units of the Controller Board

VMEbus Interface The VMEbus interface of the controller board is implemented with a 24-bit wide address bus and a 16-bit wide data bus. It has address and data lines as well as further control lines. Interrupt operation is possible. The controller board is supplied with power via the P1 connector from the 5 V system voltage of the VMEbus system.

Watchdog The controller board consists of an integrated watchdog circuit that monitors the functioning of the microprocessor (Motorola 68332). When the watchdog responds, a reset of the controller board is initiated. When the controller board starts again, it recognizes that a reset has been initiated by the watchdog before. The function of the watchdog cannot be controlled by the user.

Voltage Monitoring, Reset System The reliable functioning of the controller board requires a sufficiently high operating supply voltage (5 V) via the VMEbus. If the voltage falls below a minimum value, an integrated voltage monitoring circuitry initiates a reset of the controller board. Thus, the outputs of all INTERBUS devices are reset. A reset of the controller board is activated under the following conditions: Response of the voltage monitoring circuitry Reset signal on the VMEbus Pressing of the reset button (can be switched off per DIP switch) Register access to the reset register in the host interface

Mapping the Controller Board to the VMEbus System The controller board is mapped to the VMEbus system via a 256 kbyte Multi-Port Memory (MPM) and via a 16-byte window in the short page. The 256 kbyte Multi-Port Memory (MPM) transfers data between the controller board and the VMEbus system. The registers in the short page are used, for example, to initialize and define the operating modes of the controller board.

Short-Page Window The controller board uses 16 bytes in the short page. The base address is set with the switches 1 through 8 of switch block S1 and switches 1 through 4 of switch block S2. If you place the controller board in front of you and the system connector is on the top left, the switch positions are identical to that shown in Figure 4.

Only the low-order byte of each of the 8 words is used. This permits a word access to even addresses and a byte access to odd addresses. The meanings of the short-page registers are explained in the user manual (IBS VME SC UM E).

Figure 4: Setting the base address of the short-page registers (all switches are set to OFF by default)

Switches 5 to 8 of switch block S2 have special functions. The MODE switch determines if the supervisor only can access the short-page window (MODE = OFF), or if user and supervisor can access it (MODE=ON). The RESET_EN switch activates the reset button located behind the front plate. The controller board can only be reset with this button if it is in the ON position. The button should be in OFF position for normal system operation. If switch 7 of switch block S2 is in position ON, the controller board automatically changes to TESTMODE after startup. During the test phase (lab operation) the test mode of the controller board can be used to configure any INTERBUS test installation easily and to store it on the optional plug-in memory card (IBS MC FLASH). No I/O data can be transmitted between the host system and the controller board if this mode is active. 4

Switch 8 of switch block S2 is reserved and its setting should not be changed (default setting upon delivery is OFF). Multi-Port Memory (MPM) Structure The 256 kbyte MPM is the interface to the host system and is divided into several areas. The user can select any address for the start address in the 16 Mbyte address area of the host system: Data Interface: Mailbox Interface: Control Registers: The host system and the controller board exchange the input/output data (process data) of the INTERBUS devices via this area. This interface is used to exchange commands and messages between the host system and the controller board. Several registers for the exchange of status and handshake information between the host system and the controller board.

The controller board defines the locations of the different areas in the MPM with a descriptor. The areas are described in the user manual.

Address Modifier The address modifiers determine with which access method (USER/SUPERVISOR) and to which memory area of the controller board the host system accesses. The controller board supports the following address modifiers: Short User I/O Access Short Supervisory I/O Access User Data Access Supervisory Data Access 29hex 2Dhex 39hex 3Dhex

Startup of the Controller Board

There are two ways to start up the controller board: 1. Configuration of the INTERBUS network via the IBS CMD SWT G4 software (short: IBS CMD). This software can be used to configure the INTERBUS devices in the bus topology as well as their addressing in the host system. Functions, such as preprocessing of data and quick response can also be configured with IBS CMD in an easy way. The configuration created with IBS CMD is stored in the memory card (IBS MC FLASH) on the controller board and executed on every reset. IBS CMD is a WINDOWS software and is linked to the controller board via the diagnostics port on the boards front plate. 2. The host system does the complete configuration by means of certain program routines in the application program. For this, the application program uses the Mailbox Interface between the host system and the controller board, and not the memory card. Which of the above ways is used depends on the specific requirements of the application. If the IBS CMD software is used there are benefits in the handling of the configuration or parameterization of INTERBUS as well as in diagnostics. Users who would like to use the IBS CMD SWT G4 software (for Generation 4) we recommend to order the system package (cf. Page 8). This package includes all components for an easy start.

Integration of Different Operating Systems

The user manual for the controller board includes a driver software for the OS9 operating system. This system is the most often used operating system for VMEbus systems. Owing to the openness and the international acceptance of the VMEbus system there is a large variety of different operating systems. Phoenix Contact offers the IBS VME DDK device driver development kit (cf. Page 8) for an optimal link of the IBS VME6H SC/I-T board. You may use this kit to develop your own software drivers for the various operating systems. The DDK includes comprehensive documentation as well as the driver sources in C which permit an easy conversion to the operating system used.

Interfaces
Serial Interface (RS-232) The controller boards serial interface (RS-232) connects an IBM-compatible PC with the IBS CMD SWT G4 E software (Order No.: 27 21 44 2). This software can be used to configure, parameterize and diagnose the INTERBUS system. IBS CMD SWT G4 is independent of the programming language or of the operating system of the VMEbus system. Parameterization and configuration information can be stored on the controller boards memory card (accessory part) with IBS CMD SWT G4. In addition, the firmware of the controller board can be downloaded. The serial interface on the front plate of the controller board has been designed as a 9-pos. D-SUB male connector. The controller board is connected to the PC via the IBS PRG CAB cable (Order No.: 28 06 86 2) shown below.
