cancer,with support of

education and care.
Nicholas Koenig is the brave, courageous, and heroic son of Erik and Shannon Koenig of Richmond. At
the age of 2, Nicholas was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a cancer that starts inside the
bone marrow where cancer grows from cells that would normally turn into white blood cells. This type
of leukemia, rare in children, warrants a more aggressive chemotherapy and usually requires a successful
stem cell transplant to cure. Nicholas received numerous rounds of chemotherapy and a blood stem cell
(cord blood) transplant throughout his 2 year ght with AML. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy and
transplant did not keep Nicholas body in remission. Nicholas passed away in the arms of his parents on
August 16, 2011. In his short 4 years of life, Nicholas inspired others to reach out to support him and his
family, and other families battling pediatric cancer.

Duties/Responsibilities include: 1) Manage prevention of service failures thru effective dispatching
of drivers. 2) Maximize Kane tractor and trailer asset utilization.
3) Make safety-conscious decisions. Ensure compliance with all regulations, policies and procedures.
4) Establish solid business relationships and maintain open, accurate and timely two-way
communications with drivers and customers. 5) Accountable to keep drivers informed, focused, and
motivated. 6) Provide feedback to management on all service and safety issues. 7) Accountable for
the assessment of quality and reliability of existing operations.
Job Qualication Requirements: *High school or equivalent required. *Experience using
computerized software systems, including Word, Excel and Outlook. *Experience in the petroleum/
transportation industry preferred.

Bridge footings and other debris found at the 8th Street
and Church Avenue intersection have delayed progress a bit
on the Railroad Avenue project.
Before the Wobegon Trail passed through town, railroad
tracks ran in its place. A bridge once carried the tracks over
8th Street. The bridge and tracks had been removed but the
footings were buried.
Once the intersection is complete, the detour will become
more convenient for trafc. The opening of the new detour
will take a couple more weeks to be ready.

For Isaacs HOPE Foundation
In the past year, the U of M has made progress in many
priority areas in pediatric cancer research and Isaacs
Foundation is a valued partner in this work. Wed like to
highlight two areas in particular that the University of
Minnesota has made signicant strides.

Development of New Therapies for Brain Tumors
Opening of 131I-MIBG therapy at University of Minnesota

In the next year, with the continued support of Isaacs
HOPE Fund the University of Minnesota plans to:

Add a new faculty member to their division whose
research is focused on developing new therapies for
childhood leukemia;
Continue development of new agents for brain tumors
by partnering with researchers across the Academic Health
Center;
Concentrate their research efforts around a bone tumor
often diagnosed in adolescence, osteosarcoma;
And support ongoing quality of life research in their
childhood cancer survivor clinic, which will help them
understand the long-term side effects of treatments for
childhood cancers.

Opening of 131I-MIBG therapy at University of Minnesota

In the next year, with the continued support of Isaacs
HOPE Fund the University of Minnesota plans to:

Add a new faculty member to their division whose
research is focused on developing new therapies for
childhood leukemia;
Continue development of new agents for brain tumors
by partnering with researchers across the Academic Health
Center;
Concentrate their research efforts around a bone tumor
often diagnosed in adolescence, osteosarcoma;
And support ongoing quality of life research in their
childhood cancer survivor clinic, which will help them
understand the long-term side effects of treatments for
childhood cancers.

I really enjoyed 4-H when I was younger, being able to go to the fairs and travel for the different contests, said Roer- ick. Now that Im a mom, I thought my kids would have a blast being in 4-H. This year was Jacobs last year showing as a Cloverbud in the 4-H dairy show on Aug. 1, Elis rst year as a Cloverbud and Aubree showed on Aug. 3, as part of the novice class in the open class dairy show.
Mergen's a pickin'
ALBANY Its the middle of August and sweet corn season has nally arrived. For Joe Mergen and his three children, Hunter (15), Wy- att (12) and Robin (9), this time of year is one of the busiest as they sell sweet corn from their hobby farm, which is located on the outskirts of Albany. Joe has one acre of land near his home that is used for growing sweet corn, while the rest of his land is wetland or rented out. I wanted to use that acre for the kids to mess around with, said Joe. It would get the kids outside for a little bit. The Mergens have been
selling corn for 15 years and enjoy the experience. They view this small business as a fun opportunity rather than a way to make a simple buck. While Joe prepares the land and plants the corn, the children pick and sell it to the local community.
The kids do most of the work, said Joe. They go out with their wagon and pick doz- ens in a day. Joe recalled one sizzling summer day when a customer arrived at their home asking for 20 dozen ears of sweet corn. It was hot out and Hunt- er and Wyatt came out of the
