Speeic Problems
Here s an example ofa specific problern I have encountered on p<e-1988
Suzuki Samurai' S which causes a CO falre in the AirCare driving test Altbough this
Is a comm.on problem with these vchicles many Asan irnport carburettors have
similardesgnfeatnres which producethe sametypeo problems.
1. Labyrinth hale

Take a Iook atFig# 1 (above) oftheSuzukipowervalvecircuitfroma 1987
Samurai. You will note that the vacuum supply from me ntake manifold passes
through a restrction orfice which Suzuki calls a "cushion jet"_This feature IS
common to a number of Astan rnanufactured carburenors and is intended to slow
power valvc operation. The other desgn feature which Suzuki uses on ths
carburettor is a labyrinth hale which bleeds off sorne of me vacuum signa! from
aboye tbe power valve pistan. Thecombination of these features allows the vaIve to
open qnickly but close slowy,
Now Iets look at what happcns as the power valve pistan and bore wear, As
wdearancebetween-thepistol:md fue
vacuum which leaks around the pistan. As we noted in the previons paragiaph ths
vacuum is supplied tbrough the "cushion jet" so the volume that can be suppled is
Imited bythe sze of thejet To make matters worse we are aIready bleedng offsorne
of the available volume through the labyrinth hole. As wear ncreases the power
valve opens ar higher manifold vacuum Ievels and loaded mode Aireare failures are
the result, As the wear gets WOISe the problem will show up dung high idle
operation as well.
There are several waysto corrcct this problem other than replacernent with a
"new" (not rebnilt) carburettor, 1 prefer to do all three at once so the repar Iasts, Step
one, driU out rhe cushionjet to 7/

Iabyrinth hole toremove this bleed point. Step three, re place the power valve pistan.
ifIt as available, tomnmize pistn to bore clearance and bleed off Withthere
modicarions the power valve resumes normal operation even as the carburettor
body contmues to wear over rime, since the powervalve spring rate becomes the
only maior control factor.
