Methodology 4.1. Stone Pitching Materials No stone shall be less than 200mm in minimum dimension, except that smaller pieces or spalls may be used for filing spaces between the larger stones. Rounded boulders or cobbles shall not be used. Cement shall be ordinary Portland Cement complying with the requirements of BS 12. Sand for the cement mortar shall comply with the requirements of BS 1200. Grouted stone pitching The area shall be prepared by excavation, shaping and trimming to accommodate the stone work and shall be thoroughly compacted by hand-ramming to minimize subsequent settlement. A trench shall be excavated as directed by the Engineer along the toe of any slope to be pitched or along the unprotected edge of the pitching in the beds of streams. Commencing at the bottom of the trench, the stone shall be laid and firmly bedded into the slope and against adjoining stones. The stones shall be laid with their longitudinal axes at right angles to the slope and with their surfaces in contact so as to break joint. The stones shall be well rammed into the bank and the spaces between the stones shall be filled with cement mortar composed of one part of cement to three parts of sand. Before the mortar is applied the surface of the stones shall be thoroughly cleaned of adhering dirt and clay and then moistened. The mortar shall be placed in a continuous operation for any days run at any one location. The mortar shall be worked into the pitching to ensure that all spaces and voids between the stones are completely filled and to the depth of the stone pitching. After placing of the mortar the stones shall be thoroughly brushed so that their top surfaces are exposed. The grouted pitching shall be cured for a period not less than four days after grouting with wet sacking or other approved wet cover.

4.2. Gabions Materials For all materials refer to the standard Specifications section 5102 Construction of Gabions The bed on which the gabion cages are to be laid prior to filling, has to be leveled to a depth as shown on the drawings or as directed by the Engineer. Where required, a foundation trench along the toe of the revetments or wall shall be excavated to the dimensions shown on the drawing. Sufficient connecting wire braces shall be provided and tensioned between the vertical sides of each of the outer visible cells to prevent the deformation of boxes as they are being filled with stone. Particular care shall be taken in filling visible faces of gabion boxes where only selected stone of adequate size shall be used and prepacked to obtain a fair finish. The filling of boxes shall be done in stages in order to prevent deformation and bulging. 4.3. Guardrails Materials Guardrails shall comply with the requirements of BS970: 080 M 40. All guardrails shall be galvanized. All bolts, nuts and washers shall have a hot-dip galvanized zinc coating that complies with the requirements of BS 729. Guardrail posts shall be manufactured from steel section to the dimension shown on the drawing. Placing of guardrails The posts, spacer blocks and guardrails shall be completely erected, set true line and level, so that the rail is at the required height above the level of completed road shoulder and the lap shall

be in the direction of the traffic movement. All bolts shall be tightened prior to any backfilling of the holes.

The backfill material for the holes shall either be a class 15/20 concrete or a 12:1 soil: cement mixture as directed by the Engineer. The soil: cement mixture shall be thoroughly rammed with layers not exceeding 100mm compacted thickness. Guardrails shall be erected in such a way that there are no projecting ends that might interfere with or endanger traffic. All splices of rail elements shall be at a post, and plate ends shall make contact through the entire area of the splice. The completed guardrails shall be neat, and there shall be no visible deviations from line and grade. The posts shall be straight and vertical. 4.4. Road signs Materials Structural steel shall comply with the requirements of BS 4360. Where specified, all structural steel, including tubes, shall be galvanized in accordance with the requirements of BS 729. All steel bolts, nuts and washers shall have hot-dip galvanized zinc coating that complies with the requirements of BS 729. Steel plate shall be 1.60mm thick and comply with the requirements of BS 4360 All paints shall comply with the requirements of BS 4800 Retro-reflective material shall be supplied in the following grades: 1)Engineering grade which shall conform to the requirements of BS 873 Part 6 2)High intensity grade which shall conform to the requirements of US Standard Specification for Roads and Bridges.

Erection of road signs Road signs shall be erected in the position shown on the drawings or indicated by the Engineer. Excavation for the road signs shall be made according to the dimensions shown on the drawings. The bases of the road signs shall be a class 15/20 concrete, and where the excavation are to be backfilled with soil, a 1:12 cement: soil mixture shall be used. During erection, the structural steelwork shall be firmly bolted and protected in order that no buckling or damage is caused during erection, or by the equipment used for erection. Posts to which signs are to be fixed shall be vertical, and the underside shall be horizontal after completion of erection. 4.5. Road Marking Materials Paint for road marking shall be hot-applied thermoplastic reflectorized material complying in all respects with the requirements of the Specifications. Colour for white marking shall be to BS colour no 00E55 of 4800 and yellow shall be BS colour no 08E51 of BS 4800.

Applying road marking Road marking paint shall not be applied to damp surfaces. Road marking shall be applied to bituminous surface after sufficient time has elapsed to ensure that damage will not be caused to the painted surface by volatile substance evaporating from the bituminous surfacing. In no case shall road marking be applied until at least 48 hours after completion of the bituminous surfacing. Before the paint is applied, the surface shall be clean, dry and completely free from any soil, grease, oil, acid or any other material which will be detrimental to the bond between the paint and the surface. The lines, symbols, figures or marks shall be set out by means of paint spots of the same colour as the proposed final lines and marks. These spots shall be at such intervals as will ensure that the traffic markings shall be as shown on the drawings or as specified in relevant National Regulations. The premarking must be approved by the Engineer prior to the commencement of any painting operations. Where the paint is applied by means of a machine, it shall be applied in one layer. Where paint is done by hand, it shall be applied in two layers, and the second shall not be applied before the first layer has dried out sufficiently. Hot applied thermoplastic material shall be laid to a thickness of 2mm. The method of thickness measurement shall be in accordance with BS 3262 Appendix H.

Hazards and Risks Risk Assessments Refer to: - Health and Safety Plant: 110.199/PRM/QSE/HSP/001 - BASIL READ Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Forms On going risk assessments and training of personnel is seen as paramount importance to site management with the view to maintain a high priority on safety risks issues.
