InTASC Standards Planning Sheet Music Education

This document lists each InTASC Standard with sample artifacts. The samples listed are not the only artifacts that can be included. Rather, they are ideas to get you started thinking about possible artifacts. Read each standard carefully to help you determine an artifact that demonstrates your skills for that standard.

Standard 1: Learner Development The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Lesson plans that will elicit student responses. This NOT a place for your development autobiography. You might also include vocal assessments or instrumental assessments particular to an age group, video clips of rehearsals that illustrate different types of strategies and techniques used in different grade levels. Standard 2: Learning Differences The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Adaptations and accomodations for students with special needs; for instance, color-coded music, software for use by exceptional learners, brail music, or enlarged band music or vocal music for the visually impaired. Examples of differentiated learning lessons. Standard 3 - Learning Environments The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and selfmotivation. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Classroom management plans that are visible to the students, procedures for activities, concert etiquette, expectations for obtaining instruments and music, listing of responsibility for equipment and materials use. Standard 4 - Content Knowledge The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Theory compositions, music history projects, vidoe clips of senior recital, jury evaluations of performances, theory and history assignments. Standard 5 - Application of Content The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Demonstrate knowledge of aural, visual, and kinesthetic techniques in teaching concepts, using manipulatives in teaching elements of music, visual aids, listening exercises, movement exercises. Standard 6 Assessment The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teachers and learners decision making.

SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Final project from the Measurement and Evaluation Class, other assessment tools that were covered in the Measurement and Evaluation Class, scanned rubrics that were used for auditions, grading procedures, self-evaluation or peer assessment as an assessment instrument. This would also be a place to include student work. (Remember to remove/cover students names). Standard 7 - Planning for Instruction The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Overall curriculum for a certain grade level or specific ensemble, using 21st skills for arts education, final grid of outcomes for your long plan or semester. This would be a place to include student work. Standard 8 - Instructional Strategies The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Examples of lesson plans that incorporate history and culture through music, comprehensive musicianship projects, MENC Standards 8 and 9.This would be place to include student work with research. This might include Internet searches. Standard 9 - Professional Learning and Ethical Practice The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: Display memberships in professional organizations (reflections should include why this is important and how it helps the teaching of music), use reflections of music association sessions that you have attended, two-three observations logs from classroom visits, professional development plan for continuing education. Standard 10 - Leadership and Collaboration The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession. SAMPLE ARTIFACTS: List leadership roles in on-campus organization, explaining how these roles will help you become a better music teacher. In addition, demonstrate community experience that will enhance your teaching or music skills, projects completed with public schools in your discipline, parent-teacher conference preparation and participation, email communications with parents (remove names from any communications).
