Medway Photo Festival Second year showcase 2013 ISSUE TWO Ramona Guntert http://www.ucaphoto.co.uk rochester http://www.ucaphoto.co.uk rochester is a yearly event that is carried out by our second year students within the unit on narratives on the photography degree at UCA Rochester. As the frst project of the second year, the narrative unit gives students greater freedom and responsibility, allowing them to develop their individual practice.
CLOSE YOUR EYES is an exhibition of work by eight emerging female artists. lt is a philosophical discussion of absence and presence by using diferent formats of photographic and video installations, each body of work contains a readable absence. NOVO ASPECT is an exhibition featuring eight individual bodies of work that are interrelated by the concept of change and transition, with artists looking at landscapes, cities, human emotion and mental state and the way they replenish, grow or deteriorate. PARAMNESIA is a unique collaboration of works by upcoming artists of the University of Creative Arts. Looking at our states of mind and extremities of emotions, be it through memories or physical experiences and how we cope with these emotions. EYEDENTITY looks to tackle some of the issues surrounding identity and question the workings of modern day media, association and perception within our society. lssues of perception of our selves and others in western media, are tackled. SIN CITY looks to take its audience on an intrepid journey, complete with heroes, spies and villains, to the underbelly of society and into the dark corners of the human psyche - revealing a fantastic and phenomenal world where nothing is as it seems. SUDDENLY NO! is an exhibition of work that draws upon an overriding theme of transformation; some works focus on a fantastical interpretation of mundane situations, while others procure an existing space and shoot it in such a way that it fts a new purpose. REPEAT TO FADE artists use a combination of video, flm and digital to expose a journey ranging from the psychological to the documentary which are linked together by the lyrical repeat to fade structure. NYCTOPHOBIA is characterized by a severe fear of the dark - and this exhibition does nothing but warrant that phobia. Exploring the sinister beauty found in death. Nyctophobia will leave you questioning your own perceptions of mortality; of life and death; of light and dark. WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY The second year really was where I found my voice. It gave me the perfect amount of freedom - after a year of intense technical training - to really experiment and try new things using my new found knowledge. It also set me up for working professionally and interning thanks to the professional practice unit pushing me |nto t|e he|d. / fee| t|at /'ve done mo|e w|t| my wo|| |n t|e oast yea| t|an / |ave eve| done oefo|e - |ts an exoe||ence t|at's t|0|y matured me and my work.. Ollie Gapper Working on Medway Festival was a greatly rewarding learning curve for a lot of us - we divided roles and had to develop an industry-minded maturity in order to work together and get each component of the exhibition under control, from the framing of our own work to the curation and actual exhibition space. It was an incredible experience that gave me an understanding and sturdy framework for when we graduate and create group exhibitions with other artists. The Festival was successful and it was great to encourage a photographic and creative community. Sanaa Hamid The Narrative Unit helped me to develop new skills and made me aware of the great output you can achieve as a group when you support each other and give critical feedback. It was a great experience to show my work on a wall in a gallery environment. I learned new ways of presenting work that supports my conceptual idea. It also gave me a greater understanding of the physicality of a photograph in relationship to the space. All the effort we put into the event was worth it when we saw all the visitors were enjoying photography. For me an important aspect is the communication between the viewer and the photograph. In the future I want to explore more ways of communicating and use photography as an expression of my thoughts and ideas..
