Take a drive down Haddon Av-
enue and you may notice a new
addition to the front of Haddon
Fire Company No. 1. Standing on
a platform no more than three
feet high, this subtly warped
piece of metal is no artists cre-
ation, but instead a piece of steel
once part of the World Trade Cen-
ter.
Haddon Fire Company No. 1
chief Joe Riggs explained it was
entirely by chance that they had
the piece installed with a little
more than a week until the 12th
anniversary of the attacks on the
World Trade Center.
While a considerable amount
of time had passed since they had
first contacted the New York City
Port Authority, Riggs explained
that fire company president
Butch Brees was contacted just
the week before and traveled to
LaGuardia Airport to pick up the
piece of steel.
This should never be forgot-
ten and thats why we made the ef-

As students hit the books and
playing fields in New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, Maryland,
Delaware and throughout the
Mid-Atlantic region, PTAs, coach-
es, athletic directors and adminis-
trators are tasked with finding
ways to help raise funds amid
tight budgets.
Parents of students at
Moorestown High School, and
Haddonfield High School, Sherri
and Perry Gold, and Marc Rosen-
thal, who are also the entrepre-
neurs behind the launch of the
Sports & Education Expo
(www.SportsEducationExpo.com)
in Philadelphia Dec. 13 through
Dec. 15, have a novel way for
schools, clubs and sports teams
throughout the region to earn up
to 50 percent back on each ticket
sold.
In addition to receiving a
higher return than other
fundraisers, selling tickets to an
event directly geared to schools
and families is easier than selling
chocolate, magazines, cookie
dough and wrapping paper, said
Sherri Gold.
Youth tickets, for ages 13-18, are
$10 each and adult tickets are $20
each, good for all day Saturday
and Sunday of the sports, well-
ness, and education event at the
Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Children 12 and under receive
free tickets to the Expo.
Tickets can be sold starting
Sept. 15 and funds can be earned
and spent prior to the December
Expo. The fundraiser ends Nov. 1
or earlier if the organization
chooses.
Its an ideal fit, because the
Expo is an event directly geared
for parents, students, coaches,
athletic directors and guidance
counselors, explained Perry
Gold.
The weekend Expo will feature
workshops on student leadership,
sports injury prevention, bully-
ing, college planning, nutrition,
health and wellness and positive
coaching, including a Friday, two-
hour coaches clinic from major
league baseball legends Cal Rip-
ken, Jr. and Bill Ripken, formerly
with the Baltimore Orioles.
There will be a college fair for
athletes and non-athletes as well
as celebrity appearances, auto-
graphs, demonstrations, clinics
and exhibits, added Rosenthal.
Baseball, softball, golf, soccer,
lacrosse, football, tennis and row-
ing are the featured sports this
year.

Megan Schultheis, a Cherokee
High School student, in Marlton

The familiar faces of The Pais-
ley Pickles have been a staple in
downtown Haddonfield for many
events. Comprised of Haddon-
field residents Frank Dellorco,
Paul Bartholomew and Mark
Companile, this musical trio is
taking their pickle antics to the
Big Apple for a New York Strong
Kids Campaign benefit concert at
Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater
on Sept. 28.
Dellorco said that the opportu-
nity to join the Strong Kids Cam-
paign benefit concert came after
playing a three-day showcase in
New York City last year for the

fort to chip in and get this memo-
rial done, Riggs said.
Enlisting help from local sculp-
tor John Giannotti and Joe Rodi
of Rodis Auto Body, the memori-
al was constructed permanently
housing the piece of steel in front
of the Haddonfield Fire Company
No. 1 building.
It makes us feel good to
keep this memory alive, Riggs
said.
With the memorial already un-
veiled for the public, the official
dedication ceremony will take
place on Oct. 10 at 6:45 p.m. during
Fire Prevention Night. Speakers
will include Riggs, as well as
Brees who Riggs said was the
one responsible for spearhead-
ing this project and possibly a
representative of the New York
City Port Authority.
Riggs explained that this
memorial is a way to support all
the families who were affected by
the events of Sept. 11 and to re-
member the loved ones they lost.
He explained that Haddonfield
has many sculptures that are
important to the town; this me-
morial is important on a national
scale honoring those fallen po-
lice officers, paramedics,
firefighters and many more who
left so much behind in their pass-
ing.
It didnt take any creative art
to make this. It was a tragic
event, Riggs said. The objective
of our department is to make this
a constant reminder.
Yet, with nothing more
added to the piece of steel than a
foundation for it to rest on, Riggs
said some residents have ex-
pressed to him what they see
when they look at the twisted
medal.
People have said it represents
the wings of an eagle, Riggs
said.
While not everyone sees the
eagle wings, Riggs is sure of one
thing: That cars driving by the
fire station are continually paus-
ing to catch a glimpse of the new
memorial.

Church parking lot
would not benefit residents
The Haddonfield Christian Science
Church may want a parking lot but it does-
nt need a parking lot. Parishioners main-
tain that it will benefit the community by
getting 22 cars off the street on Wednesday
nights. It will certainly benefit the parish-
ioners but at what cost to the borough and
its residents?
The borough lost rateables when the
church bought the property and demol-
ished the house. It will again lose rateables
when the neighbors ask for lower tax as-
sessments because of the parking lot in the
neighborhood. Parking lots in residential
neighborhoods do not increase the value of
adjacent houses. Such economic hardship
should not be inflicted on these citizens.
Under New Jersey law, hardship refers
solely to particular physical conditions of
the property. It does not refer to personal
hardship, financial or otherwise and in
granting the applications, there must be a
benefit to the community.
The church has not asked for handi-
capped parking. If it had, there would be
no need for the lot or the concrete ramp of
some 60 feet from the lot to the door.
The church maintains that it needs the
lot because of parking problems on
Wednesday nights. Daytime parking in the
area is not impossible and certainly easy at
night when the normal activities of the
Fortnightly, Historical Society, Bancroft,
professional offices, high school and ceme-
teries are over. There are no high school
sports activities on Wednesday nights.

T
welve years have passed since
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washing-
ton, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 12 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 12 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Twelve years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us, are
setting up 9/11 memorials, obtaining
steel from the World Trade Center to
display and hosting 9/11 remem-
brances.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 12 years ago. We should always
respectfully pause and respect those
who were taken from us and those
who fight for our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 12 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.
We will never forget
Twelve years later, we continue to remember those lives lost on 9/11

Presenters conference, when an
event promoter approached the
band in regard to playing the ben-
efit concert.
We try to latch on to kidori-
ented charities, Dellorco said,
explaining that with all three
members being parents, the op-
portunity was a no-brainer. I
think experiences like this one
just seemed kind of neat because
its just something that really hit
home for us.
The New York Strong Kids
Campaign aims to make YMCA
programs available to local chil-
dren, even if their family may be
limited financially.
It wasnt too much later, Dellor-
co said, when the event promoter
called and formally invited The
Paisley Pickles to join the docket
along with Brooklyn-based kids
band, Moona Luna.
With the proceeds of the con-
cert contributing to the Strong
Kids Campaign, the YMCA also
will be hosting a silent auction
during the benefit concert.
I think it will be a blast, Del-
lorco said. Its a good excuse to
take the trip up to NYC.
Promising to have plenty in
store, Dellorco said the fans can
expect to hear some of their new
material as well as some songs
from their newly released album,
Welcome to Planet Snarfbart.
Of course, The Paisley Pickles
will also be bringing some of
their slapstick skits with them to
incorporate into their show.
We got some more hands-on
interaction with the kids that
were going to have to prep for,
but not too much more than a
usual show, Dellorco said.
Following the 40-minute set,
The Paisley Pickles will also or-
ganize a meet and greet, for even
more interaction with their
young audience.
The band focuses mainly on
kids music, ranging from rock
and roll to jazz to punk rock
playing everything from an accor-
dion to a ukulele.
We have 12 kids between the
three of us, so were well-quali-
fied in that area, Dellorco said.
Back in 2009, the group was
spotted by local entertainment
manager of Jane Mathers Man-
agement and Director of First
Night Haddonfield Jane Mathers
while performing in downtown
Haddonfield. Since then, Mathers
has managed the band, which she
says has grown substantially in
the five years she has known
them. She also mentions that it is
an advantage managing a band so
close to her.
Its nice to have a local band to
work with since I live here,
Mathers said.
The concert is slated for Satur-
day, Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the
historical Marjorie S. Deane Lit-
tle Theater located between
Broadway and Central Park West
at 5W and 63rd Street.

site at

paying $12 million to rid the bor-
ough of the Bancroft parking lots
to gain open and green space, and
here we are considering in-
stalling a parking lot just next
door. The attorney for the church
maintains that the lot will look
as it is. Handicapped parking
with signage, a ramp, a concrete
driveway, ambient lighting, a bar-
rier chain and green plastic
ground cover will look exactly
what it is a parking lot. Even
the church will lose its outdoor
space for picnics and such. Will
more police services be needed or
will an Unauthorized vehicles
will be towed notice be deemed
sufficient?
And heres a dangerous prece-
dent. It is pushing the envelope
if this lot is rezoned. Will the
Fortnightly, the Lutheran Church
or the little Belmont Avenue
church be denied their lot? The
Lutheran Church is located in a
densely populated residential
area and has 950 members, not 40.
It manages its parking problem
with handicapped parking and a
van for its elderly and handi-
capped members.
The Zoning Board should not
rezone; the church does not need
it, and the neighbors and borough
cannot afford it.
