AbstractBased on the properties of the cloud model on the process of transforming a qualitative concept to a set of quantitative numerical values, an adaptive computational intelligence optimization algorithm is proposed by analyzing the correspondence between search characteristics and cloud models. In the proposed algoritnm, the feature parameters of solution sets are created by a multidimensional backward cloud generator, and then adaptively adjusted based on the change of the elite solution candidates. The result is then used by a forward cloud generator to produce the solution set of next generation. No any search parameters are predefined, and, no matter what the initial solution set is, the whole system can adaptively search for solutions to various complicated optimization problems. Two illustrative examples of parameter identification for Lorenz and Chen chaotic systems are given with the aid of an appropriate evaluation function. Numerical simulation and comparisons with the other two existing algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm. INTRODUCTION

It is well known that Genetic Algorithm (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), sometimes are classified into the sphere of Computational Intelligence Algorithms (CIAs) [1], which make full use of the advantages of swarm searching for solutions to the complicated optimization problems without central control and global model of the problems to be solved. Parameter identification of chaotic systems is an inverse problem in nonlinear science, using the data in theory and observations, with deterministic dynamic equations but some unknown parameters to be estimated. Nevertheless, in real world, the parameters may be difficult to determine due to the complexity and instability of chaotic systems. Recently, CIAs have been applied to parameter identification of chaotic systems. For example, GA was adopted to estimate parameters of the Lorenz system [2], and chaotic ant swarm algorithm was applied to the Lorenz system [3-4], and PSO [5], NQPSO (novel quantum-behaved

PSO) [6] and HGPSO (hybrid genetic PSO) [7] were proposed for parameter identification of the Lorenz system. However, CIAs are non-deterministic algorithms based on the heuristic strategies. And the search strategies and search parameters of CIAs are determined on experience rather than theoretical guidance. Meanwhile, chaos is a bounded unstable dynamic behavior that exhibits sensitive dependence on initial conditions and includes infinite unstable periodic motions. Therefore, it is very difficult for a CIA with empirical and fixed search parameters to obtain the original parameters of various chaotic systems. In this paper, a computational intelligence algorithm based on cloud model (CIACM) is proposed by analyzing the correspondence of search characteristics of CIAs and cloud models and adopting a cloud model to express the randomness and fuzziness of search process in CIAs. No any search parameters are predefined, and, no matter what the initial solution set is, the whole CIACM system can adaptively search for solutions to various optimization problems. The remainder of this paper is organized as follows. In Section II the CIACM is proposed. In Section III, parameter identification of the chaotic systems is formulated from the optimization point of view and solved by CIACM. Numerical simulations and comparisons are provided in Section IV. Finally, several conclusive remarks are given in SectionV. II. CIACM
