First AGM Of The North Kootenay Lake Hospice

Hospice services are dedicated to offering free of charge compassionate care for patients in their last phase of life, their families and friends, and anyone experiencing grief and loss. Care is offered at home or in care facilities with physicians and other members of the health care team. After several years of support by the Nelson Hospice Society, a group of area residents, committed to revitalizing hospice services in our community, joined together to form an independent society. With their dedication, the new Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake was formed and sufficient funding was secured to move ahead with its vision. The society and its Board of Directors have been helping with the hospice-related needs of our community since February. The Executive Director, Chelsea Van Koughnett, and a strong group of trained volunteers support clients and their families in the residential facility and palliative care room, and at home. The new society is now holding its first AGM and will greatly appreciate the support of your attendance. Please join us on September 21 at 11 am at the Kaslo Seniors Hall to help celebrate our accomplishments and to elect our new Board. The business meeting will be followed by a light luncheon. Additionally, it will be preceded by an optional walk at 10 am at the Lighthouse Beach labyrinth, in which we will hold our intention in support of the availability of hospice services throughout the world. The Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake is very grateful to all of its members, to those who have given grants and donated financial gifts, the Pennywise and especially to the New Horizons Program for its generous support.

The album marks a major evolution from Roses 2011 self-titled folkpop EP. This shift is best represented by the albums title track, Northeast Southwest, a tune which reflects upon being drawn in different directions and the realization that a sense of home can be found wherever you are musically, as well as literally. The record is a retrospective of her life in la belle ville as well as on tour, with songs depicting stories of personal loss and loneliness as well as illustrations of emerging from dark and difficult moments. Worried for the wrong reasons

On August 30 , the Nelson Star carried an article featuring Area F director Ron Mickel expressing his concern regarding the risks to residents (homeowners, businesses and schools) on the fan of Duhamel Creek associated with logging activities currently underway in the watershed. Mr. Mickel cites the recent occurrence of damaging floods and landslides in the region this spring as the justification for residents to be worried about the impact of slides in their watershed. As the professional hired by Kalesnikoff to identify hydrogeomorphic risks in Duhamel Creek as part of their planning process, I can understand the residents fear. There is no question that the West Kootenay region experiences a high frequency of hazardous events including floods, slides, debris flows and avalanches. The devastation of Johnsons Landing last year is still fresh in everyones minds and floods associated with heavy spring rain-on-snowmelt caused extensive damage throughout the Kootenay region earlier this year. What I think is unfortunate about the situation in Duhamel Creek is that hazards exist and residents should be concerned for their safety, but the hazard that warrants attention is flooding not slides due to logging. Duhamel Creek is an alluvial fan that has been built up over the last several millennia by the process of flooding. Natural slope breaks along Duhamel Creek channel effectively eliminate the risk of slides impacting the fan. However, floods large enough to take out bridges along Highway 3A and damage private structures occurred on Duhamel Creek in 1956 and 1974. There is no question that floods of this magnitude will occur again. The questions that residents of Duhamel Creek need to focus on are: (1) What emergency plans are in place to ensure residents will be safe when a large flood event occurs? (2) What are the climatic conditions that are likely to trigger large magnitude, potentially damaging floods on Duhamel Creek? and (3) Is there a chance that logging activities could increase the frequency of these large damaging flood events? The answer to this last question is no. The current levels of harvest are still very low (less than 15%) and Duhamel Creek is an alpine-dominated system, so that peak flows are driven mainly by snowmelt from upper elevations above the areas subject to timber harvesting. Rather than taking the position of fear-mongers, provincial and regional authorities need to take leadership roles and initiate a program of hazard assessment and, most importantly, public education so that residents of the West Kootenay are knowledgeable about the hazards that exist in this area and have the necessary information to avoid becoming victims of these hazards.

Heart Attack Warning Signs

1. Chest discomfort (uncomfortable chest pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain, burning or heaviness) 2. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body (neck, jaw, shoulder, arms, back) 3. Sweating 4. Nausea 5. Light-headedness If you are experiencing any of these signs, you should: CALL 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately, or have someone call for you. Keep a list of emergency numbers near the phone at all times. Stop all activity and sit or lie down, in whatever position is most comfortable. If you take nitroglycerin, take your normal dosage. If you are not allergic or intolerant to ASA (acetylsalicylic acid, commonly referred to as Aspirin), the 9-1-1 operator may advise you to chew and swallow one adult 325 mg tablet or two 80 mg tablets. Do not use pain medicines such as acetaminophen (commonly known as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (commonly known as Advil) as they are not the same as ASA (Aspirin). It is important to note that ASA wont treat your heart attack by itself. It is essential to call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number rst and take ASA (Aspirin) while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive. Call 911 and you will be directed to an ambulance dispatcher. An ambulance will transport the patient to the closest emergency room and attendants are prepared to provide
CPR and debrillation should the patient suddenly have a cardiac arrest. Depending on the needs of the patient, he or she may be transferred to another level of care which could be Nelson, Trail, or Kelowna. Ambulance paramedics are in contact with a Provincial Emergency Response Physician at any time when needed. New Whooping Cough and Measles Cases Concern Medical Health Ofcer
A recent increase in whooping cough and measles in our province has a regional Medical Health Ofcer concerned, and he is reminding parents to make sure their children are immunized so they are not at risk. The West Kootenay has had a surge of whooping cough cases in children over the last few weeks, following a large whooping cough outbreak there in 2010, said Dr. Rob Parker, Medical Health Ofcer. We have also seen measles activity this summer in the Lower Mainland, including the worrisome exposure of newborns in a hospital maternity ward in the Fraser Valley. The West Kootenays and the Fraser Valley have some of the lowest childhood immunization rates in the province. Both measles and whooping cough can spread quickly and easily among those who arent vaccinated. These infections can cause serious consequences for any child, but newborns and infants are at greatest risk. The best way to protect newborns and infants is through high vaccination rates - also known as herd immunity. When a large percentage of a population is vaccinated, a disease cant take hold, said Dr. Parker. When childhood immunization rates fall below 90 per cent we start losing the protection offered by herd immunity and this puts unimmunized children and newborns at increased risk.
