The forum is a great place to ask questions about pretty much anything, other students as well as dedicated members of LF1 MEDSOC will answer
The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) costs around 250 K and you will need it for entry in to some university buildings and as an ID card when you go in to the hospitals. With it, you can also get discounts at many places (shops, restaurants, travel) in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Guides
The Guides are dedicated students who are available to help you settle in to life in Prague and life as a medical student. You will be divided into groups and each group will have appointed guides. You will meet with them regularly as they know that starting medical school in a different country is a daunting experience. They are there to help you every step of the way. You will also be able to contact them by email, Facebook and phone. Feel free to ask them anything from which textbook to use, to which clubs are good.
Start of Term
The start of term is on 1st October 2013. You will have already received your timetable of classes on enrolment. Its a good idea to have a look at the websites of the teaching departments in advance to see the teaching schedule so you know which topics are being covered. Your work load is reasonably light in the rst week but quickly builds up in the rst month.
Dropbox
LF1 MEDSOC have set up a Dropbox system so that all students have immediate access to valuable study resources without even needing to ask. On enrolment, you will be asked to give us your email address and also to open a Dropbox account. Using this email address we will invite you to a shared folder. You and the rest of your study group will all share this folder, and inside it, there will be organised study resources for you. You can also upload new les to this shared folder as a great way to share resources with your fellow students. So make sure you get access to this system on enrolment day. Our Guides will be there to make sure this happens smoothly.
LF1MEDSOC.CZ
Our website also contains many valuable study resources in the Education section. Whenever we get our hands on new study material that we think is helpful, we upload it onto both our website and the Dropbox folders.
FSAD
If you have anything you need to sort out concerning your studies then visit the FSAD ofce in the Deans Building (Kateinks 32).
Visa
EU citizens do not need to apply for a visa. In Czech Republic, they recognise two types of visas. Short Term Visa (up to 90 days), and Long Term Visa (more than 90 days). Students from non-EU countries who wish to stay in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days have to apply for a Long-Term Visa. An application for the permit should be submitted to the Czech Embassy or Consulate in the your country of origin at least two months before arrival. Please be aware that the administration process can easily take 8 weeks. Remember to apply for visa on time (at least two months in advance). The price of the visa fee depends on country you come from. The documents that you submit for the application cannot be older than 180 days (this doesnt include personal travel documents, civil registry documents and photographs). All documents, except for the travel documents, must be in the Czech language (either originally in Czech or in a foreign language accompanied with a certied translation into the Czech language). Refer to the Ministry of Interiors Website for more information regarding the application.

Health
Health Insurance
Health insurance is very important in the Czech Health Care system. EU students with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and non-EU students with a valid heath insurance can obtain health care in all State Hospitals (for free) and at any private GP or private hospital (may carry extra charges depending on what you need).
Medical Check-Up
You will need to have a medical check-up before registering for the 2nd year of studies. The stamp in your Index Book can be obtained by any GP you choose to register with.
EU Students
EU students should ensure they request the European Health Insurance Card in their home country. Czech hospitals are entitled to give urgent necessary health care to EHIC holders. However it is strongly advised that you should activate it prior to using it, through health insurance funds (HIF). This includes obtaining a "Certicate of Registration", which you must bring it with you every time you seek medical care, either at a GP or at a hospital (for emergencies, (just the EHIC is enough for admission). Visit the largest health insurer VZP to sort this out free of charge at Na Pertn 6, Praha 1.
Non-EU Students
Non-EU students must have Czech health insurance to apply for their visa extension. Please contact ForStudents as they can also sort our your health insurance needs. They have the license to give you health insurance. Remember that ForStudents have regular ofce hours at the LF1 MEDSOC Ofce, every Wednesday 09.00 - 17.00. They can offer student health insurance for as cheap as 850 K per month. This is a good option because:
Register with a GP
It is advisable that you register yourself with a GP. In that way, if you ever need general consultation and/ or follow-ups, you can arrange an appointment and obtain medical care free of charge, as long as you are registered as his/her patient and you have a valid health insurance.

Private Flats

Carrying ID
You are probably not going to need to use any form of ID on a daily basis, however, you should carry a copy of your passport data pages (inc. visa pages) in your wallet at all times as Czech law requires you to do so. It is unlikely you will be asked to show it but if you are unable to present it, you can be detained until they can prove you are who you say you are. It is also advisable to send a copy of these to a friend/ family member in case you lose your passport, as it will speed up the process of getting a new one.

Communication
Mobile Phones
You can choose from Vodafone, T-Mobile and O2, though most students are with Vodafone. For ease of communication, you should visit a phone store in the centre. A pre-paid SIM from Vodafone costs 500 K and comes with 500 K of credit. Call costs and text messages are cheap and if you have Vodafone SIM you can send free SMS to other Vodafone users from the website. Credit can be bought from phone shops, tabaks and at most ATMs. You can also set up a phone contract with any of the retailers. Ask around to make sure you get the best deals. Skype is a software that you can download onto your computer to make calls to landlines and mobile phones very cheaply. You can also (video) call other Skype users for free. This is a great way to call home without costing you a fortune.
Banks
To open an account you will need your passport, additional proof of ID, proof of an address in Prague (e.g. your halls/at contract or a bill with your name and address) and conrmation of studies. There are lots of banks available and some offer student accounts. Be aware that Czech banks charge fees for almost everything. The larger branches in the centre usually have a foreign customer desk with English speaking staff. If you have a student card issued by the bank in your country, you will not be charged the fee for ATM withdrawals, however the exchange rate may differ from ATM to ATM, depending on the Czech banks exchange rate that they offer. Internet
The most popular companies are O2 and UPC. A great company that will get you set up at no extra cost is BCH Telecommunications. They speak English and will deal with any correspondence between yourself and your internet provider. There are lots of cafes with WiFi all over Prague as well as internet cafes. For those of you who will get internet service from O2, you can make use of the various free WiFi hotspots around Prague (shopping malls, cafes etc).
Money
Currency
The Czech Koruna/Crown (K) is the currency. In the centre you can pay with both Czech Koruna and Euros. Remember that if an exchange ofce advertises a good exchange rate, they may charge a large commission. Checking the current exchange rate online is often worth doing before you exchange your money so you know you are getting a good deal.

Transport
Opencard
On enrollment you will ll out the application form for getting an Opencard, and an agreement with processing of personal data. You will use these along with valid ID and two passport size photos to get your Open card. The Open card costs 720 K for three months if you are under 26 years (over 26 costs 1480 K) and are valid to use on trams, the metro and buses. The Opencard is validated when you place it in front of the card reader, at the metro and trams. Inspectors will be equipped with microform readers to check the validity of the card. You must carry a valid conrmation of studies (ISIC), in case of an inspection. Individual tickets can be purchased from ticket machines, some shops and via SMS (simply text DPT to 90206). Tickets must be stamped in the yellow boxes when you enter the metro station or board the tram/bus. Ticket inspectors may ask to see your ticket/travel card. If you are unable to show a valid ticket they can charge you 700 K. Always ask inspectors to show you their ofcial ID. I.P. Taxis
It is better to book a taxi because if you get one from the street, they will almost certainly overcharge you and it may not be safe. AAA taxis is a reliable company with fair prices. Call 14012 and then press 1 to be put through to an English operator. If you think you cant pronounce the name of the street and would rather text, you can text City Taxi your name, the address and the time you want the taxi for on 777257257. They will text you back with the time it will arrive and a description of the taxi. Airport Transfers - ForStudents also provide cheap transport to/from the airport. To get more information, visit www.forstudents.cz.
Getting Around
The best way to plan your journey is to visit the DPP website. Select Transport around Prague and then Journey Planner. Simply enter the stops you want to go from and to and it will tell you how to get there and how long it will take.
Trains
You can get to the main train station, Hlavn Ndrai, by metro (Red Line) or tram (5,9, or 26). You can travel within the Czech Republic and also others such as Slovakia, Austria, Poland, Hungary and Germany.
Coaches
Student Agency coaches can be used within the Czech Republic and all over Europe. Sometimes they are faster and cheaper than trains. Opencard www.opencard.cz DPP www.dpp.cz/en AAA Taxi www.aaataxi.cz +420 14014
