D. Yates and D. J. Goodman, second edition, 2005, ISBN 0-471-27214-0. Prerequisite: APMA 2120 [Multivariable Calculus] or equivalent. A working knowledge of double integrals, infinite series, and functions of one and several variables is required. Course Description: A calculus-based introduction to probability theory and its applications in engineering and applied science. Topics covered include counting techniques, conditional probability, independence, discrete and continuous random variables, expected value and variance, joint distributions, covariance, correlation, central limit theorem, and an introduction to statistical inference. Course Objectives: "GO FOR THE UNDERSTANDING" To provide the student with: A working knowledge of concepts and tools of probability theory. Experience with a variety of typical applications of probability. A foundation for further studies in probability, statistics, and stochastic processes. An enhancement of overall mathematical skills. Homework: Several problems will be assigned every week. Assignments are listed on the third page of this syllabus. Homework will not be collected, but is to be done for your own benefit. The weekly quizzes given on Thursdays/Fridays and a large portion of the exam questions will be based on the homework assignments, so please work out each problem carefully and make sure you understand the work you do and the procedures you use. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given every Thursday/Friday the last 20-25 minutes of class. Usually quizzes are on problems similar to homework. There will be NO makeup quizzes. A grade of zero will be given for any missed quiz. To take into account any kind of problem (personal illness, death in family, job interview, plane flight, etc.) that may prevent you from taking all the quizzes, at the end of semester your quiz average will be calculated after dropping the two lowest quiz grades. You must attend the full class on Thursday/Friday in order to take the quiz (i.e. you may not show up just in time to take the quiz - you'll receive a grade of 0% for that quiz). Exams: There will be two midterm exams and a comprehensive final. Exams are aimed at checking your understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles and your ability to apply the material learned to solving various problems, including those you may never have seen before. The final exam will cover the entire course. A zero grade will be given for any

missed exam. Be aware that the date or time of the final cannot be changed. Please check with the final exam schedule to make sure you are able to make the final exam . A make-up final exam will only be given in the cases where another exam is in direct conflict with our assigned exam time slot. This is the exam schedule: Exam 1: Monday, October 7th, 8:00 9:30 pm, location TBA Exam 2: Monday, November 11th, 8:00 9:30 pm, location TBA FINAL EXAM: Wednesday, December 11th, 7:00 10:00 pm, location TBA Grades: Grades will be determined using the following: 10% online WeBWorK homework sets (no grades dropped) 10% for the quiz average (with lowest 2 grades dropped) 50% midterm exams (25% for each midterm) 30% for the final exam Attendance and Classroom Etiquette: Class attendance and participation are expected. In order to minimize class disruption, avoid late arrivals or leaving early. Daily class attendance will be taken. If you miss a class, make sure you get the notes from someone else who attended that day. Turn off cell phones before entering the classroom (or at least silence them). Please do not chat. The use of headphones, music players (such as ipods), or laptops is NOT allowed during class time. The only exception for a laptop is if your textbook is online (please verify this with me the first week of class). Please use the restroom either before or after class (not during). No eating during class. E-mail: It is assumed that all the students are properly registered for the class and have a valid UVA email address. Announcements will be made via university email. Learning Needs: If you have learning needs that have been evaluated by the Learning Needs and Evaluation Center (LNEC), I will be happy to accommodate them and help you in any way I can.
