Managerial Functions at Procter and Gamble India


Introduction:
The Procter and Gamble Company, also known as P&G, is headquartered in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It is an American Multinational consumer goods company founded in 1837, by William Procter and James Gamble.1 P&G India established in 1964, is one of the largest and also amongst the fast growing consumer goods company in India. P&G operates under three entities in India - two listed entities Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care Limited and Gillette India Limited, as well as one 100% subsidiary of the parent company in the U.S. called Procter & Gamble Home Products. P&Gs product line includes the Beauty & Grooming products, the Household Care products as well as the Health & Well Being products.2. Its been now around five decades that P&G has been amongst the leaders in Indian market. According to me, P&G is able to retain amongst the market leaders because of its process of achieving desired results through efficient utilization of human and material resources. The above diagram shows us the Management process which helps us understand that there are six functions of management that help the efficient utilization of resources i.e. Inputs (human and material) to get a desired result .i.e. Output. The functions of management can be stated as: Planning Organizing Staffing Leading Communicating

Controlling As we can see in the diagram the above six functions play a major role in optimum utilization of resources to get the desired results. So we can say that these functions namely: Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Leading, Communicating, Controlling also played a vital role in the success of about five decades of P&G India. The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible activities that may be carried out at Procter and Gamble India with reference to the managerial functions.

Managerial Functions:
Planning:
Planning can be said to be the major aspect in the Managerial functions. Planning is the function which sets a goal for the organization and also gives a direction to follow towards achieving goals. Planning consists of various aspects such as short term plans, Long term plans. Mission: Creating a Mission i.e. the answer to question who we are? And for P&G the mission would probably be, we will provide branded products and services of superior quality and value that improve the lives of the worlds consumers, now and for generations to come.3. The above statement clearly states what P&G are and what do they want to accomplish in years ahead. Vision: A vision statement gives direction towards completing the mission. It answers the question what we want to do? The Vision for P&G can be, Creating innovative products that improve peoples lives in small but meaningful ways.3. The vision clearly states what P&Gs major focus is towards accomplishing its mission. Strategic Plans: Creating strategic plans so as to stay apace with the vision.

Organizing:
Organizing is a managerial function which is followed by planning. As implementation starts with organizing after formulation of a clear mission, vision, core values are done in planning. As organizing is the function where in a manager has to see that the plans are carried out successfully to ensure the fulfillment of the tasks i.e. achievement of goals set in the planning phase.4 At P&G India, Organizing would include probably include the following steps: Organizing the process in the organization in various aspects such as manufacturing, product development so as to help complete the vision and the mission of the company. Creating an organogram .i.e. a systematic organizational structure best fitting the goals of the organization. Eventually helping in accomplishment of goals. P&Gs organizational structure is a three dimensional .i.e. Regional, Functional and Product basis.
