PART IX-A - SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES: (1) $155,195. for the NANCY SUSAN REYNOLDS AWARDS - With prior approval from the IRS, in 1986 the Foundation established awards to be given annually to up to three North Carolina residents who have shown resourcefulness in tackling problems that may have resisted traditional approaches. The awards seek out and honor unrecognized individuals who have worked to make a positive difference in North Carolina. The awards are presented each year at a luncheon ceremony attended by over 350 people. The recipients receive an award of $5,000 for personal use and they are able to designate charitable recipients to receive an additional $20,000. (2) $169,907. for the SABBATICAL PROGRAM - In 1990, with prior approval from the IRS, the Foundation established a sabbatical program for individuals in paid full-time leadership positions who have served their North Carolina nonprofit organization for at least three years. The sabbaticals were established to provide an incentive to leaders of charitable organizations to continue their charitable work, and to improve and enhance their leadership capacity, skills, and talents. Each recipient is awarded $15,000, some of whom will not take their sabbaticals until 2006. (3) $599,918 for SPECIAL PROJECTS, CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS: (A) $137,450. for meetings/conferences on issues relating to judicial selection and independence, administration of the death penalty, education policy, voting , rural economic development, the future of the Council on Foundations , philanthropy, civic education , social capital and grassroots organizing. (B) $859. to support anti-racism and diversity training for staff of the Foundation. (C) $14,680. for meetings/conferences on issues relating to the environment including water quantity, open space preservation, and collaborations among environmental organizations. (D) $42,289. - Good Government/Campaign Finance Reform - The Foundation began a project in 1999 to study and educate the people of North Carolina about good government and campaign finance reform issues. In 2002, the Foundation expanded the project to support training and education for legislators, particularly for newly-elected members. In 2004 and 2005, funds were expended to support training programs for new legislators, issue education for legislators and meetings relating to campaign finance reform and other policy questions. (E) $30,813. to support a special project of the Foundation designed to improve the delivery of professional development to teachers and strengthen schools, particularly those in low-wealth areas of the state. The project works with and provides support to the State's Education Cabinet. (F) $31,141. for meetings/conferences with other grantmakers to discuss ways to strengthen nonprofit organizations serving the Immigrant population in North Carolina and working to address issues of racial justice.
