COURSE OBJECTIVE: Introduction to mechanical vibration, free and forced responses of discrete and continuous systems. Application of vibrations to the analysis and design of machine and mechanical components. REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS: Mechanical Vibrations, by S.S. Rao, Pearson Prentice-Hall, 5th Ed., 2011. Supplemental materials. TEACHING ASSISTANT: Mr. Chang Duan, TuTh 1:00-2:30pm in EBIII 3257. PREREQUISITE: C or better in MAE 208; CSC 112 and MA 341. HOMEWORK POLICY: Homework assignments will be posted at course website twice a week, and is due two days later at the beginning of the class. Students are encouraged to work in 2-3 person teams in doing the homework problems. However, copying the solution manuals or others is prohibited. All problem solutions will be made available online at the course web site. EXAMINATIONS: There will be one midterm exam during the summer session (June 8). The nal exam is comprehensive and is scheduled at 8:00-11:00am of June 27, 2011. All exams will be closed books and closed notes. However, you are allowed to bring ONE page of cheat sheet (front and back) to the exams. PROJECT: A one week period will be given for students to work on a course project. The due date of the project will be the last day of instruction (June 24, 2010). The project will be a group eort with no more than 3 persons, and its results should be documented in a formal report.
