Communicative competence

When we talk about communicative competences we going to related everything that we do, even our way of dress, because just how we dress we are transmitting our level our class, but indeed the most important of communicative competences is learn to understand, and at the same time be understood for the others. What is competence? For Hymes: is the ability to interpret message and negotiate meaning within specific contexts. For Savignon: is an interpersonal construct examined by means or overt of performance of two or more people in the process of communication. (slideshare)

For it we have to develop four areas which are: Linguistic Sociolinguistic Discourse competence Strategy competence

Linguistic competence: is knows how to use the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of a language. Linguistic competence asks: What words do I use? How do I put them into phrases and sentences? Sociolinguistic competence: Knows how to use and respond to language appropriately, given the setting, the topic, and the relationships among the people communicating. Sociolinguistic competence asks: Which words and phrases fit this setting and this topic? How can I express a specific attitude (courtesy, authority, friendliness, respect) when I need to? How do I know what attitude another person is expressing?

Discourse competence: Knows how to interpret the larger context and how to construct longer stretches of language so that the parts make up a coherent whole. Discourse competence asks: How are words, phrases and sentences put together to create conversations, speeches, email messages, newspaper articles? Strategic competence: knows how to recognize and repair communication breakdowns, how to work around gaps in ones knowledge of the language, and how to learn more about the language and in the context. Strategic competence asks: How do I know when Ive misunderstood or when someone has misunderstood me? What do I say then? How can I express my ideas if I dont know the name of something or the right verb form to use? (NCLRC, 2003, 2004) The four areas mentioned before are the most important for the good development of communicative competences all of them have to be on the same level, think this are like the four macro skills that we follow to learn English; we have to know about linguistic because linguistic help us to be clear at the time to share or convey an idea, we have to know about sociolinguistics, because it will help us to know how we going to communicate we person of different class social, age, gender, religion, doctors, laws, even gangs. In a discourse competence we improve for make long speech putting the sentences in the right place, it mean linking the sentences in good way to make of the message something that capture the attention of the audience or the reader, because if we as teachers for example; have problems to convey the ideas to our students we will be misunderstood or they will not pay attention. In strategy competences we have the capacity to know understand to somebody that dont do a good pronunciation, we must have the capacity that in our mind fix what he or she is trying to say and understand, although in some case we are misunderstood for the students and it is a little more complicate, because we have to look for the way to create the same level to understand in all of them.
