Sheet Metal Design

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Sheet Metal Design course is intended for Engineers, Designers, Programmers involved in the manufacturing and design process, and people who would like to rethink the design of their sheet metal parts. In this course, the students will learn how to reduce processes and how to make full use of sheet metal knowledge to replace or supplement current manufacturing processes, such as milling, extruding, and the use of tubes.

Overview of old design methodologies and common design flaws. Discussion of ways to avoid those design mistakes or flaws. Overview of various ideas, techniques, and solutions when designing sheet metal parts: - avoid stress points - determine force path - increase stiffness and stability - reduce parts in weldment - reduce distortion - determine appropriate welding seam positions - reduce grinding - use positioning aids: pins, tabs, markings, etc. - integrate multiple parts - prepare radius and corners - create bendable profiles Overview of techniques and solutions for a flat pattern. Discussion of step-by-step design process from an idea to a finished product. Hands-on practice: - students apply newly learned design knowledge and techniques to optimize the design of various sample parts during the workshop. Overview of latest manufacturing technologies: - TRUMPF laser cutting technology - TRUMPF punching technology - TRUMPF bending technology Overview of the design process chain: - discuss methods to streamline the design process Overview of ways optimize the sheet metal process, including in-depth discussions on: - Cost considerations - Time - Weight optimization - Production optimization - Reduce or eliminate fixturing - Functionality - Design considerations for sheet metal parts Customer parts are welcome as class examples to be re-designed.
