Title of Activity: Grand Prix Racing Circle

Number of Teams & Group Size: Minimum 3 people per group Maximum 7 people per group At least 2 teams

Logistics Needed: For each group: 1 x tubular nylon climbing webbing / rope / belt ~ 2 - 4 meters long

Time Allocated: 10 - 30 minutes

Goal: Transfer the knot around the group as fast as possible

Preparation & Set-Up: Ensure sufficient tubular nylon climbing webbing for all groups Make 1 knot in the tubular nylon climbing webbing / rope, if using a belt, simply clip it together, thus making a circle Distribute the tubular nylon climbing webbing to all groups

Directions for Conducting the Activity: 1. Once each group has received their circle, instruct one of the members of the group to hold the knot. Participants should spread out until there is no slack in the circle. 2. Brief participants that they are to pass the knot around the circle as fast as possible, using only their hands. Once the knot arrives back at the original person, the entire team will show they have completed by raising the circle above their heads. Qualifying Round 3. For this first attempt, they will pass the knot in an anti-clockwise manner, for 1 round, until the knot returns to the original person. 4. Begin the activity by saying, Go!

5. Challenge participants to do it faster, keeping the same anti-clockwise manner and passing it 1 round. Say Go! Quarter Final Round 6. Challenge participants to pass the knot in a clockwise manner this time, and to pass it 3 rounds. Say Go! 7. Again, challenge participants to do it faster, keeping the same clockwise manner and passing it 3 rounds. Say Go! Semi Final Round 8. Challenge participants to pass the knot 1 round anti-clockwise, then 1 round clockwise. Say Go! 9. Next, challenge participants to pass the knot in this alternating manner, but to do it for 3 rounds (1st round anti-clockwise, then clockwise, 2nd round anticlockwise, then clockwise, 3rd round anti-clockwise, then clockwise). Say Go! Championship Round 10. Finally, challenge participants to pass the knot 1 round anti-clockwise, then 3 rounds clockwise, then 1 round anti-clockwise, then 1 round clockwise. Say Go! 11. Acknowledge the winning team, then proceed with the debrief of learning.

Specific Rules: 1. Participants must be holding on to the circle at all times, no letting go. 2. Teams must quickly transfer the knot around the circle, to each person, using only their hands to pass it along. 3. Once completed, teams must raise the circle above their heads.

Learning Points: Teamwork Improving the Process Efficiency Effectiveness Coordination

Integrity Responsibility Playing your Role Perseverance

Facilitator Notes: If using different coloured tubular nylon climbing webbing, you may ask participants to pick their favourite colour team. Ensure participants dont cheat by letting their hands go slack, allowing the circle to slide along. Get participants to make race car sounds to heighten the mood. You may wish to use only portions of this activity if you have lesser time, or if you have older participants. While its best to conduct this activity standing up, participants may also take part while sitting down (wheelchair-bound, etc).
