with fantastic finds from all over the world are shown inside. Its not the actual value of the item that determines a great find rather its how much the item is valued by the finder. Ive got some old beatup buttons, cannon balls and a few coins that may not be worth much, but the images and smiles they bring back are priceless to me. A Big Thanks to all the people that responded from Facebook, and all the various forum members that participated sending in your items and brief stories. Boyce Morris, USA This Texas Navy Button, and Texas Marine Corp button was found in Chambers County Texas. They were both dug from about twelve inches deep. They were located about one hundred yards apart.
I picked up a signal beside an old stump, and thats where I found the Texas Marine Corp button that is on the right. The button on the top is a a Texas Navy button that was found about twenty yard from an old home site that dated back to 1825. Of all the relics dug on this site these were my best finds there.

I just attended my first Digging In Virginia hunt in the infamousred clays of Virginia. I was determined to use my Teknetics T2 metal detector, but was warned by many that the high mineralization of the red clays was the domain of Pulse Induction machines and a VLF metal detector was best left at home. My T2 was up against P.I. metal detectors that cost six times as much but it held its own and then some! I finished the hunts with over a hundred Civil War bullets, a handful of buttons and a pile of other relics. Some of the bullets were at least 14 inches deep! I am a firm believer in the T2 with its superb ability to penetrate anything from iron-infested home sites to the highly mineralized red clays.
I saw many old friends and met many new ones, including quite a few Facebook friends. Pictured are my finds from both hunts. It includes over 100 Civil War bullets, a Virginia button as well as a New York and Yankee Staff button. I found a few Yankee Eagle buttons, artillery shell fragments, a colonial coin, part of a sword scabbard, a few gun parts, heel plates and other odds and ends. These were my first DIVs and I hope to attend many more. If you ever want a chance to dig American Civil War relics, this is a good bunch of people and an excellent place to start. Thanks for looking....

Hi Jim, My name is Chris and I live in Cornwall, UK With a few hours to spare I decided to hit a local beach. This particular beach has never been much of a tourist attraction due to the long walk down the cliff face and no local amenities. Still detecting is detecting and sometimes you just have to get out. I arrived at the beach, parked up my bike, and started the long walk down the coastal path. Once I got to the bottom it was quite obvious that a lot of sand had been pushed in and after a few moments I decided I really would be just wasting my time. I started the long walk back up the path to my bike. Once I go back to my bike I realized I had actually wasted a journey to the beach so I thought I might as well swing my trusty old Sovereign for an hour at least. You never know!.. Sure enough 5 minutes into my hunt I pulled out this beauty. I stayed on the beach for another hour and the only thing that came up was a 20 pence piece... You really never know!!

Dan Patterson, USA This is one of my best finds- handmade Lead Cannon by a Yankee Soldier in a Vicksburg campaign camp. The interior of the barrel and touch hole are from a silver writing pen. Every time I look it, I wonder how did he do that and how much time did he put in it. One of my favorite finds in 27 years of digging.
Another Best Find- is this JR Wilson stencil. I found this on a battlefield years ago. I know what happened when he lost it. His regiment was walking up a valley, turned the corner, and an Arkansas battery layed in on them. They scattered and retreated. I found the stencil just around the corner in front of the batteries. He lost it while his regiment was getting hit with canister and shells. - Dan Patterson

Good Morning Jim! I was recently excited to find a relic. I have attached the photo. I was metal detecting in a recent trip to Canon City Colorado. I went detecting in several places in this historic town but didnt find much of anything. My moms house was built in the 1880s, so i figured, what the heck, lets see what might be around the house. So, I started out in the back yard and found typical junk along with a 1914 wheat penny that has seen better days. Next, I went to the front of the house, and after about 10 minutes I get a good sounding target, but very shallow. I was thinking this is going to be another piece of junk again, or it might be something modern. Reluctantly, Idug the target that was only about 2 inches down, and out popped this eagle and cannon pin. At first, Ididntthink to much about it until I researched what it was. Then Irealizedit was a medal, or part of, a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) medal. These were awarded to the veteransof the Union Army from the Civil War. This makes this, my favorite find of all time, considering I wasnt looking for Civil War related items and the strange place of finding it.
Editors Note: This is how the awarded GAR Medal originally appeared.

Who were the Trinobantes? The Trinovantes or Trinobantes were one of the tribes of pre-Roman Britain. Their territory was on the north side of the Thames estuary in current Essex and Suffolk, and included lands now located in Greater London. They were bordered to the north by the Iceni, and to the

west by the Catuvellauni. Their name derives from the Celtic intensive prefix tri- and novio - new, so meaning very new in the sense of newcomers, but possibly with an applied sense of vigorous or lively - so the name could mean the very vigorous people.

Hi Jim, Hope Im not too late with this, but Ill send it anyway. Its a 2nd Century Umbonate disc brooch, complete with pin. I found the brooch about 11 years ago. Ive found some very nice things over the years but this is my favorite and I love it to bits all the best, Muddy Mick
Editors Note:
This is a Romano British brooch that has some of the original enamelling remaining. It was found in a field not far from the location of the Rudston Villa. The site of the find was thought to be a farmstead and the owner of the brooch would of been of high status, probably from the Villa. The pin and catch plate are still intact and would have been used to fasten the toga. The brooch is bronze and would have been stunning when worn. It is amazing that some enamel has survived after around two thousand years. Source: BBC News

Untouched In Ohio
By Kyle Lindeman, USA

This site, which I will be referring to as the Hole, was noticed on some old maps from 1875. I realized this location had great potential, due to it being a community entertainment area for well over 135 years. I had an opportunity to go to this location back in March of this year, and boy was it cold outside. I had hunted for about 1 hour and accumulated about $1.00 in clad and decided to leave and not look back. That day really threw me for a loop. During the rainy days of spring this year, I had that gut feeling to go back when it was nice outside and really give it another good effort. It was now June by this time and I had been hunting great private locations back in Northwest Ohio with a buddy of mine Terry Barnhart. Money was getting tight, from driving back and forth from central Ohio, and I decided I was going to hunt some more down here near Columbus. I started checking out the old maps and came across the Hole again. After debating it awhile I ended up planning my next days activities around metal detecting this site. After arriving at the site I knew I only had about two hours to detect before I had to get home. I decided to
Relic Hunter July - August, 2011
start on the other corner of this football field shaped lot this time. I was there maybe 20 minutes and I had ten wheat pennies in my pouch and things were looking good. I ended up hitting it good that day and found two silver Washington quarters and one Mercury dime. I couldnt believe it. This site was actually producing for me! I was unable to metal detect for the next couple of days and it nearly drove me crazy having to wait so long to go back. I made it back a few days later and this was the start of a 7-day binge of metal detecting. On the second day of that week I came across a signal that was heavily covered with iron. It came in near a quarter, but not quite. I decided to dig the hole and after pulling out quite a few nails a circular copper disk came out. I looked it over for five minutes and couldnt see anything that made me think it was a coin. It was smooth. After I left that day I was driving home and I kept looking over at my passenger seat, where I laid the copper disk and noticed a shield on the one side. I knew it looked like an old state made currency but was not sure which. After looking through the coin book at home, I knew it was a
New Jersey copper. I posted this find on some well renowned forums and received confirmation that it was a 1787 Maris 6D variety. This site continued giving me better coins one day after the next for a few more days. I ended my survey of this site for this article on a great note. I brought a friend of mine, Mike Haer, for the last hard hunt. He had an E-trac and I wanted him to cover a couple of the real iron rich areas that I was having trouble with on my
Explorer SE. He ended up leaving happy that day snagging a two-cent piece, an Indian head cent, and a nice silver dime to cap it off. These locations dont come around very often, especially the public locations, like the Hole. Hitting the maps hard and not giving up on one bad day led me to a location that I will remember for a very long time.

Lorrie Sprigg, USA
I DID IT!!!
It was finally my turn to shine! What a summer, I waited all Winter for the moment I could put on my shorts, get my feet wet in the cool ocean water and drink in the sun shine once again. Of course finding some treasure too! Im a true blue Floridian, and being cooped up during the Winter months just isnt my cup of tea or in my case coffee! The season started out really good, this particular day the sun was brutal and I had hunted for five hours and had only found two pennies, enough of this! I told my husband I wanted to try a very different place just for the heck of it, the area we were in was a popular hunting ground. We drove north and found a place that seemed busy and might yield a nice piece of jewelry. In 45 minutes I found not one, not two, but three rings, one was a very nice 18K mans gold ring with 8 diamonds, gold is always nice! I did the chicken dance on that one. When we are at distance from each other and one of us is seen doing the Chicken Dance, you know something nice has been found. I dont think Jerry believed me when he saw a third chicken dance going on, I could see the looks on the faces of the onlookers, as if to say What in the world but I just laughed. Jerry just
36 Relic Hunter July - August, 2011
shook his head in disbelief, he hadnt had any luck this past year but had cleaned up in the previous years. Hey, its my turn! We worked the area till high tide and then called it a day. At least I was happy! The next time we ventured to the beach it was during spring break, there is always some thing left after spring break and I was there to find it. The beach was crowded and the tide was coming in, I was feverishly working the water, detecting in the water with the waves breaking is hard work, but it paid off. I got a hit, but it sounded like trash, I chased that thing around for ten minutes ready to give up but I got it! I headed for the shore and glanced down to see what I thought was the top edge of a soda can sticking out the side of the scoop. People started running up to see what I had found, so I crabbed it and handed to my husband who had pockets, I forgot my pouch.
In doing this the sun hit the opal that was in it and I gasped! It wasnt until a few yards down the beach without a audience did I get to see it. I said, What did I find, What did I find? Whoa, nice piece, signed by the designer a handmade sterling dragon fly bracelet with a opal, it was half woman, half dragon fly, a very interesting piece and heavy. Ill take it! And to top it off, this is the same area were I found those three rings, hmmm did I find a place that isnt hunted much? I aint telling! Many people see what we find and say Oh, I need to get me one of those, they dont realize we do this twice a week, sometimes eight hours a day and some days just find loose change, I feel its the luck of the draw. Its a big beach, and when youre working with a twelve inch coil and dont go over it, well youre gonna miss it, and could as much as a couple of inches! I have gone right behind someone detecting and found a nice bobble they missed. Today was Monday and it was Jerrys day off, he had asked if I wanted to go detecting, I replied Da, Twist my arm! Its very competitive between us but this year I seemed to have taken the title. We got up early, which about killed me since I do not do mornings and had gone to bed around 2. A.M. It had been awhile since we had been back to Daytona and I went this time with the idea of not finding anything so as not to be disappointed if I didnt, but in the back of my mind my favorite spot was haunting me.
We were hunting in and around the Daytona pier, when I looked up to see Jerry doing The famous Chicken Dance. WHAT!? This is the fourth spastic dance I had seen my skinny husband do, enough already, enough! I was the title holder here and it seemed to be slipping away. I wasnt having any fun yet! It was really getting cloudy and threatening rain. One place you dont want to be is on the wide open beach with a metal detector during a lightning storm! Kind of an invitation, Come get me! I dont walk fast but came alive after that first bolt of lightning! By now the beach patrol was ordering everyone off the beach, you didnt have to tell me twice! By now we are in the car and it is raining like crazy, and Im thinking to my self ah ha, this is where one wants to be, the right place and at the right time. People are grabbing their blankets and towels leaving goodies behind, shame on me! I can smell the treasure! We call ourselves The Two Pirates, fitting aye?

I was ready for a break anyway, surely the rain will stop, heck this if Florida, just wait five minutes. This was a good time to get something to eat because when your detecting looking for treasure quitting isnt an option. We sat there in the car, eating our sandwiches waiting for the rain to stop and grateful for the cloud cover all day because in July it gets HOT! But in the back of my mind I was still thinking of my spot, I hadnt been there for over a month and it had been tugging at me for a visit. Jerry said, Okay now where?, Where do you think was my answer! We then headed north to my favorite place, the rain had just about ended. I got out of the car put on my gear, feeling like Im getting ready to do a Ghost Busters movie, I wanted to say Power up. It was quiet and the beach was deserted of people, NICE I thought, maybe someone left something behind! Down the ramp I went looking to the right and then to the left. I looked at my husband and saidOkay this is it, I didnt realize how close to the truth this statement was going to become! He just nodded, laughed and remarked, yea right. I heading to the left and Jerry to the right, hoping this was going to be my lucky day! I got a hit! Another pull tab I thought, I already had a pocket full of them. Digging the hole I saw the edge of what I thought was a nickel, I always like to push my finger threw my find when
38 Relic Hunter July - August, 2011
I see a edge hoping my finger will go threw it to yield a ring, and not a coin. It DID!!! I reached for it and my finger went right through threw it! I looked at Jerry in disbelief and screamed, Its a RING! All I had seen at that moment was the backside of it, I washed it off and saw all these stones and one big fat one in the middle, I replied, Do you think its real? We do find our share of fake rings, get excited, and then its a let down when you find out its not the real McCoy. He then took it and looked at the inside, his eyes are better than mine and read the markings inside P L A T I N U M . . . ! WHAT?!! Holy Bat-Man its REAL!!!!
PLATINUM
MY PRECIOUS!
Its real, ITS REAL!!! . . . . I think? Didnt want to get to excited! Yes, it was PLATINUM, worth more than GOLD! I had tears in my eyes, I was to stunned to do the famous chicken dance, but came alive later. The sun wasnt shining at the time so it just didnt sparkle like I would have imagined. I showed it to the Captain of the beach patrol near by, he put his flashlight on it and it wasnt until I saw the fireworks that I became emotional. When we got back home, I showed the ring to my neighbor who is a jeweler and he said it was probably worth thousands. I thought maybe I need to have this one appraised. I have found many rings with diamonds but nothing like this and in Platinum. Belonging to the Central Florida Metal Detecting Club, I have seen many beautiful gems come out of the ocean and on the beach that my fellow detectors have found and I wanted to join the ranks! This is about my sixth year of hunting, Id say its about time! I met with the appraiser and I was glad I was sitting down when she gave me the news. The ring I had found had an almost perfect diamond, a 3/4 karat with 16 other diamonds set in platinum valued at almost $6000 dollars! I just sat there for a moment before the words could make it to my mouth. I have found and returned a lot of rings and if this had been lasered I would have tried to find the owner.
I just returned a 1953 class ring and a $8000 dollar engagement ring. Everyone was in tears when I returned it, including me but not for the same reason! The look on the faces when I return something that has been lost for years and then to be found and returned to its rightful owner is priceless. But today was my day to shine, this ring had my name on it and it fit my finger. I have since gone back to my favorite place and have retrieved more gold and silver, I think Ill keep it a secret! After six years of hunting, I finally found My Precious! Happy Hunting Lorrie

Hi Jim, Ive been searching through some of my finds. Only been detecting a little over 2 years so my finds tray isnt exactly overflowing with finds. As you know, over here in the UK its not unusual to find Roman, Celtic and Medieval which is great. But every now and then something turns up that is regarded as common when in actual fact its a bit of a rarity. For me this would be my Queen Victoria 1848 Shilling. Shillings are not rare, in fact they are quite common. But when you find one in better than fine condition with an added bonus that its a rare year then it just goes to show that you shouldnt take relatively modern

coinage for granted. It doesnt have to be 2000 years old to get me excited it could be 160 years old and still float my boat!!. This shilling was found in my first few months of detecting and its still near the top of my best finds list along with a Henry VI Quarter Noble and a King Dubnovellaunus Quarter Stater. The Shilling was found on ploughed land near Deal in Kent which has produced Celtic, Roman and Medieval for me but I consider this shilling my best find of this particular field, because of its rarity. Regards Mike
Peggy did it again! Detected during her lunch and out popped a KMI CADET button Circa 1850 covered in gild!

I used to work for contracting company, we used to gut old houses out. There was this one house to come to my mind, It had a dirt basement in some areas, some had concrete. It was still vacant, I asked permission, permission was granted. I enter the house and went straight down to the basement. Looking over the place, I decided to on the left side of the basement, I was using my Whites Coin-master 6 D/B Series 1 . I turned my detector on and manually tuned to ground. The detector sounded off right away ! The sound was so loud, I thought it was some iron pipes below me. So, I turned and ran the coil in a X pattern checking for junk targets or a good target. North and South sounded like junk, and east t and west sounded real good. I dug about 2 or 3 down and turned up a Morgan dollar~1879-S. I checked the hole again, it sounded off again, another silver dollar, this time it was a 1922 Peace dollar. I checked the hole again, and again, and again, this cannot be happen to me ! I thought I was dreaming, somebody pinch me before I wake up ! In that hole about 23 x 15 I found 10 silver dollars, 10 silver halves dollars, and 2 Barber quarters. The coins were: Morgan Dollars: 1879-S, 1880-O, 1889, (2)1901O, and (3) 1921 Peace Dollars: 1922,1925 Barber Half Dollar: 1908-S Walking Half Dollars: 1941,1945 Franklin Half Dollars:

I did not find anything else that day, but tomorrow just another day, I went back the next day and looked around upstairs in the rafters of the roof and found old mason jar filled with 600 wheat pennies, but that another story. God bless and someday it will be your turn to find a cache !

Sad, I wish I had pics of my best finds ever,, I have since departed with them to get some bills paid. About 8 years ago I had found a box of dropped confederate bullets, 330 in all, with around 8 different types. Even had 34 nose cast Gardeners. There was no wood left just nails. Then my Confederate flag staff finial I practically gave away at the last show in Richmond. The guy at the SCV ribbons (Confederate veterans) table now owns it. Been trying to find him to send me a photo, I lost my camera card with the pics of it. Also, North-South Trader got some photos of it also but I have no luck getting in touch with them.
Best coin Ive found in a long time, dated 1862, Found in Union camp Battle of Seven Pines,1862, dug 6/19/2011

Tony Hunt, Dorset, UK The coin pictured is a very rare, (only the 4th one found when I picked it up) Its a silver penny of Scottish King Alexander II, circa 1235. He was a very young king and wasnt on the throne very long, so they didnt mint many coins. He kept using coins from his fathers reign instead. I was offered 1500 for this coin by Lord Stewartby who was missing it in his extensive collection of scottish hammered coins, so I sold it to him. Its the only coin I have ever sold. In better condition this coin would have made 5000 at auction in London. My coin pictured is heavily clipped around the edges, a practice that was carried out in those times so that they could melt down the clipped silver. It is also quite heavily worn where it has lain in the Dorset soil for nearly 800 years.

My best find has to be the final resting place of a Saxon lady ( assumed ) Square headed brooch, 2 small long brooches, and 80+ Amber and glass beads, the glass ones said to be re-used Roman ones. I found this only 6 or 8 weeks after buying my first detector and also won find of the year ( group or hoard section ) in the Searcher Magazine Comp.

Hi Jim, one of the most memorable days detecting in Kent, some two or three years ago now, there wasnt much going on a small field, a club site, which had been detected for years. There wasnt a lot happening when I got a faint signal and then, just a few inches down, out came my very first, to date, gold quarter stater. I was over the moon! A friend walked up to me saying, you look chuffed, what have you got? So I told him and showed him the coin. Then I said, all I would love now is a real nice hammered groat and joked that a Henry VIII, one that I have never found as yet. I turned away to carry on detecting and swept the coil. The next signal no more that 2 feet away and you guessed it, there was a Henry groat! Its a totally true story. The coin on the right only picture I have.

out there but have only found a few of them plenty more to find. Whats great about these camps there easy to get too you dont have to hike and crawl through hard to get to sites. There right along the railroad tracks and you usually drive a 2 wheel drive vehicle and walk about 30 yards to get to them on reasonably flat ground. The Chinese camps are about 6 miles apart on the south side of the tracks and in 40 years I have only found about 4 or 5 camps and there is whole lot more of them out there. Keep in touch.

Authorities say six Civil War-era coins stolen from the Museum of Transportation last month have been recovered. Police said the coins apparently were returned anonymously, but authorities arent disclosing details of their recovery. Police said no one has been arrested in the case. A transportation museum spokeswoman would not comment, saying they are cooperating with the police investigation. A silver dollar and five gold coins dating back to between 1849 and 1862 were discovered stolen June 12. They were on loan from the American Numismatic Association Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., and had been part of the traveling exhibit, Money of
the U.S. Civil War, commemmorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Shortly after they were reported missing, police said there was no evidence of a break-in at the museum. The money museum in Colorado estimates the value of the coins is nearly $19,000. The transportation museum had said it would not seek charges if the coins were returned. However, Jay Beeton, a spokesman for the Colorado museum, said today officials there are asking police to pursue the case. Police have the coins and are making arrangements to send them back to the museum in Colorado, Beeton said.

LEBANON Bill Baecker set out seeking a treasure he would never profit from, but of greater value than anything he had ever searched for. Metal detector in hand and attuned to a high setting, Baecker walked the lonely,
62 Relic Hunter July - August, 2011
rainy corner of U.S. 42 and Utica Road in Lebanon, the site of tragedy a few days earlier. Shortly after 3 p.m., his detector alerted him to the prize he sought. Baecker discovered the lost wedding ring of Sgt. Brian Dulle, the sheriffs deputy killed in a high-speed chase, and had it returned to his widow, Abbie Dulle, on the day of Dulles funeral. He and two
others were honored Friday by the Warren County Sheriff Larry Sims. Dulle was killed instantly when a 2001 Cadillac traveling an estimated 100 mph struck him as he stood in a grassy area near his police cruiser. It doesnt matter who found the ring, Baecker said. What matters is the ring was found. Franklin mail carrier Charles Otis began the search for the missing ring on Friday, May 13. An amateur treasure hunter, Otis felt compelled to begin the search because he had a son who is a Franklin firefighter. Friday evenings search was fruitless, so Otis contacted members of the Dayton Diggers, a 30-member group of amateur treasure hunters who search for valuables using metal detectors. Baecker said he received the call Saturday afternoon and immediately began to search. A ring is one of the hardest things to find, Otis said. He said the ring was made of tungsten, a metal neither he nor Baecker were familiar with. Finding silver is easy, Baecker said. Gold is a little more difficult, but I know how to look for it. I didnt even know what tungsten looked like. Baecker said other searchers had cleared a lot of debris out of the way by the time he began his search, which made his hunt easier. Sweepers the night before had started uncovering fresh pocket change, which they believed had come out of Dulles
pocket. After an hour and a half of searching, Baecker uncovered more of the change and used it to guide him to the ring, which he said was partially buried. Baecker said he was stunned when he found the ring, comparing the experience to the first rare coin he found. Baecker was aided by members of Warren County Judge Joseph Kirbys family, who, after seeing his motives were good, were able to text Simss wife about the discovery, who relayed the message in turn to the sheriff. Sims quickly dispatched a deputy to retrieve the ring, while Baeckers wife placed it in a small jewelry box. We handed it to the deputy and he started to weep, then we all lost it, Baecker said. There has been an enormous outpouring of support not only from the law enforcement but from the citizens of Warren County as well, Sims said. Sometimes you forget how a tragedy like this impacts the entire community. Also honored at the ceremony was Liz Tatterson, an 89-year-old woman who walked close to a half hour to witness the funeral. He laid down his life to keep me safe, Tatterson said. How could I not go? I cant say anymore or Ill cry.
