Title of Activity: Toss The Pizza

Number of Teams & Group Size: Minimum 3 people per group Maximum 7 people per group At least 2 teams

Logistics Needed: For each group: 1 x tubular nylon climbing webbing / rope / belt ~ 2 - 4 meters long

Time Allocated: 10 - 30 minutes

Goal: Successfully toss and catch the pizza as a group

Preparation & Set-Up: Ensure sufficient tubular nylon climbing webbing for all groups Make 1 knot in the tubular nylon climbing webbing / rope, if using a belt, simply clip it together, thus making a circle Distribute the tubular nylon climbing webbing to all groups

Directions for Conducting the Activity: 1. Once each group has received their circle, instruct one of the members of the group to hold the knot. Participants should spread out until there is no slack in the circle. 2. Inform participants that they are to hold the circle at arms length, with their hands facing up and elbows straight. 3. Tell participants they are to toss the circle Pizza straight up into the air. The minimum height the circle should be tossed is above the head of the tallest group member. 4. Teams must then attempt to catch the circle with their hands, before it falls to the ground. They must also do this without moving their feet, or stepping forwards / backwards / to the side.

5. Begin the activity and observe how participants react. Allow teams some time for planning (~ 1 minute) if they are unsuccessful at tossing and catching the pizza. 6. Repeat until teams have successfully tossed and caught the pizza at least once. 7. Challenge teams to toss and catch the pizza 3 times in a row successfully. 8. Finally, challenge teams to spin the pizza in the air, such that the knot is launched by one person, and caught by the next person in the circle.

Specific Rules: 1. Participants must be holding the circle at arms length, hands upwards and elbows straight. 2. When tossing the circle, the height of the toss must be above the head of the tallest group member. 3. Teams must successfully catch the circle in their hands, without dropping it on the ground, and without moving their feet.

Variations: None

Learning Points: Teamwork Improving the Process Coordination Perseverance Planning Creativity Ingenuity Knowing Own Strengths

Facilitator Notes: If using different coloured tubular nylon climbing webbing, you may ask participants to pick their favourite colour team. While its best to conduct this activity standing up, participants may also take part while sitting down (wheelchair-bound, etc).
