BME 2300 Skill-building Sketchbook Assignment 1: Orthographic + Perspective Drawing Due Tues/Wed, Sept 10/11

Grading Criteria For this assignment you will be graded on accuracy of your drawings, adherence to the procedures outlined in lab, and the craft of composition and line quality. Incomplete sketchbooks will be returned ungraded. Part 1 | Introduction to Orthographic Drawing

Tues|Wed Introduction to Orthographic Drawing This demonstration and introduction to orthographic drawing will cover the following: Orthographic Projections: 2 dimensional projection/representation of a 3 object drawn to scale Layout of Multi-view Orthographic Drawings. Up to 6 views of an object (Top, Front, Left Side, Right Side, Bottom, Back) can be shown although typically only 3 views (Top, Front, Side) are needed. Thurs|Fri Orthographics Continued Review Layout Techniques: Proportions and Sighting Techniques: overall proportion, comparative proportions Orthographic Line Weights: Level 1 construction/witness lines, Level 2: Hidden Lines* Level 3: Secondary object lines Level 4: Primary object lines/outlines Level 5: Section Lines* Assignment: Orthographic Drawing Practice In your sketchbooks (tracing paper pads) please complete the following assignment: Choose 3 Objects ranging in complexity from rectilinear to curvilinear. You may use as many underlays as it takes to develop 3 refined multiview orthographic drawings. Be sure to include 3 views of each: Top, Front, Side Views. Be sure that the front view is the most defining view of each object.

Self-reflection Have I built my drawing using proper scaffolding and sighting techniques? Are my views aligned and in the proper position on the page Is my linework neatly crafted and are 3 line weights (construction/object/outline) distinguishable? Part 2 | Introduction to Perspective Drawing

Thurs|Fri Introduction to Perspective Drawing This demonstration and introduction to perspective drawing will cover the following: Defining and differentiating 1pt, 2pt, and 3pt perspective as ways of drawing 3 dimensional objects and spaces in such a way that accurately reflects proportions, depth, and spatial relationships. Perspective vocabulary: Foreshortening, Picture Plane, Horizon Line, Vanishing Point(s), Birds eye view, Worms eye view Rectilinear forms in 1pt and 2pt perspective Tues|Wed More Perspective Drawing This demonstration will cover more advanced perspective techniques including: Cylindrical forms in 1pt and 2pt perspective Proportioning techniques Line weights Thurs|Fri Advanced Perspective Drawing Boolean Objects: Additive and subtractive forms Complex products forms

Assignment: Perspective Drawing Practice In your tracing paper pads please complete the following assignment: 10 pages of 3-5 cubes in 2pt perspective, 10 pages of 3-5 cylinders in vertical and horizontal positions; and 5 boolean objects (minimum of 3 distinct forms) in 2pt perspective, in ink, as demonstrated in class. Self-Reflection Have I built my drawing using proper scaffolding and sighting techniques? Are parallel lines converging towards the vanishing points on a horizon line? Is my line work neatly crafted and are 3 line weights (construction/object/outline) distinguishable?
