INTRODUCTION TO INTERPRETIVE DANCE The performance you are about to see is an interpretative dance in which every movement portrays

a profound message. Id like to beg that you observe each motion and assimilate the meaning contained. The dance form was developed in India many millennia ago and has been continually refined and adapted to what we see as a highly disciplined and expressive art form today. Out choreographer, Haridas, has decades of dancing experience. Numerous of his protgs have performed at that bastion of dance in Kerala, the stage at the auditorium of Guruvayoor temple. His professionalism is manifested here this evening. He took two dancers without any dancing experience and moulded them into what you are about to see, within a week.

As I stand in front of this esteemed crowd of devotee, I have two confessions to make and I beg for your steadfast forgiveness. The first is my harsh criticism if Sri Ganga Devi Mata Ji over the past nine years that she was culturally inept when it came to Indian music and dance. But having seen the way she coached the dancers during Haridas absence, Ive realised how wrong I was? I was accusing her falsely. I humbly beg forgiveness for my frivolous and irrational criticism. Sri Ganga Devi Mata Ji coached the dancers like a seasoned professional during Haridas absence

My second confession goes back 40 years to my youthful days in Guyana. In 1976 six of us were given prestigious scholarships to go and study abroad. The fields of learning, countries of study and the corresponding period of sponsorship were as follows: Mining engineering, UK, 3 years Mechanical engineering, Canada, 4 years Electrical engineering, USA, 4 years Dance, India, 5 years At the time we could not decipher how a simple discipline like dance could warrant five years of sponsorship? We were of the opinion that the art of dancing could be learnt in three months!

Having see Haridas going through the exquisite movements, I now realise how intricate the dance form is, and I now fully and finally appreciate the five years of sponsorship my colleague got in 1973 to study dance in India. Incidentally, the gentleman who studied dance in India in 1973 was made the minister of culture and sport in Guyana in 1997, while I remained a menial mining engineer! Obviously, somebody realised his potential? It is my earnest hope that the two dancers here this evening will emulate, or surpass my colleague from Guyana, and achieve greater heights. Collectively, you are a better judge than I am, you decide. Thank you.
