Importance of keyboards in the classroom

According to Appell (1993), music keyboards are becoming more affordable thus they are becoming viable music-teaching tools. As the world is changing so is the education system, materials and equipment are more accessible to schools. Music educators are now able to incorporate technology and keyboards into the music curriculum. In the past full sized pianos have been the traditional instruments to use but now that keyboards costs so much less they are favored by society. Many families have started purchasing keyboards and this sets the stage for learning. Keyboard instruction in being used by more educators as a teaching tool that supports music literacy and motivates the students creativity. There are different types of music keyboards, each can be matched to the educator or students needs. Appell (1993) then goes on to say that learning to play the keyboard doesnt have to be approached purely through an intellectual manner but in an experimental framework, which promotes the student to explore and learn things for him/her-self. Students start to lose interest in K-4 classes but the use of keyboards allows the student to use previously learned information and apply their knowledge to the keyboard. Music educators consider creativity of vital importance in the education system. They teach their students certain skills but there are seldom opportunities for the students to apply those skills to creative activities. Thus the keyboard comes into-play, students feel at ease with the instrument and start to experiment. Students are encouraged to record their work and then share it with their peers and educators. They way to begin implementing a music keyboard program in schools is to form a rationale and a goal says Appell (1993). Its an opportunity to let others know why keyboards would enhance the curriculum. Also one must think about the type of equipment that would be best suited and is economically feasible. The equipment choice has to match the focus of the program. Before buying keyboards consult the staff at the music store and get their opinion on what type of keyboard would best suite your program. Start to decide which materials will be used once the instruction begins. The use of music books, piano technique series and teacher-made worksheets are great resources for students who are starting out. Take into consideration that some student will need extra help thus when planning for resources acquire additional material. Overall a keyboard class should provide a positive and motivational environment for a student. Resources Appell, Claudia J., 1993. Keyboard instruction in the music classroom.
