Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey
A True Friend, Always Listens Frits
Theres an old Chinese Proverb that goes something like this:
If you want happiness for an hour take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day go fishing.
If you want happiness for a month get married.
If you want happiness for a year inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime help others.
Theres also a saying that the two happiest days of a boat own-
ers life are the day they buy a boat and the day they sell it.
I recently purchased a used 1991 Bass Tracker to take with us
to Florida. We have a little 14-foot aluminum boat with a 15
horse Mercury that keeps me smiling while were fishing
Clinch Lake in Frost Proof, FL.
When I hear that the crappies and bluegill are biting in nearby
lakes, I really think I need a bigger boat to tow to the larger
lakes. So, I went out and found the exact boat I needed, and
bought it on the spot.
Ginger, Rosie (our cocker spaniel) and I made a test run at Lo-
ramie State Park several weeks ago. The inaugural launching
went as expected, and the Queen Bee ran like a Swiss watch. I
named our new boat after Ginger.
The only problem I encountered was the ignition switch popped
out of place. I managed to get the Queen Bee started, but I
knew this was a pain that had to be fixed when we returned
home.
We had a great day, and as we were pulling the Queen from
the water the engine died, and I couldnt get it to restart. Ginger
helped me the best she could, but the wind wasnt cooperating
and I had to get into the water and pull the boat on the trailer.
The following weekend, I decided to tackle the ignition switch,
and found myself staring at a skill level that I didnt possess.
My thought process was to take the old switch apart wire by
wire and replace them on the new switch the exact same way.
The old switch still worked, but I also couldnt get the engine
to fire.
I was ready to find the nearest marine dealer, but instead I
asked my friend Bill Shafer, from Covington, if he could come
over and at least look at my situation, and give me some ad-
vice. Bills the type of guy that knows something about every-
thing, and can fix things he sets his mind to. For example:
Ginger and I pitched an electric ice cream maker in the trash
while in Florida. Bill and his wife Ruthann asked us to join
them for homemade ice cream one evening. While enjoying the
sweet, cold, delicious treat, Bill commented, Do you like the
ice cream? We both replied, Its fantastic!
Just wanted you to know, I made it with the ice cream freezer
you threw in the trash, he divulged.
Bill not only helped me with the ignition switch on Sunday, he
also helped me with the engine not firing. When he left, the
boat started and ran like its supposed to run. Cant wait to get
back to Florida.
This weeks bottom line: Are we going to be friends forever?
Asked Piglet.
Even longer. Pooh answered. - Winnie the Pooh

Are You an
Efficient Investor?
Generally speaking, if youre
efficient at a particular task,
youll get good results without
wasting effort. As youve already
learned from your life experi-
ences, its usually far better to be
efficient at something than to be
inefficient and thats certainly
true with investing.
So, what can you do to be-
come a more efficient investor?
Here are a few ideas:
Invest systematically. If you
put a few dollars in an invest-
ment, such as a stock, that you
heard was hot, and then a few
months later put some more-
money in another vehicle that
strikes your fancy, and you con-
tinue this pattern indefinitely, you
may not be maximizing your re-
sources. By taking this type of
haphazard approach, you could
end up owning a bunch of invest-
ments without rhyme or reason
a motley assortment that may
not help you reach your goals.
Instead of following this
route, consider a systematic a
proach, sometimes known as dol-
lar cost averaging. To do so,
youll first want to identify some
investments that are appropriate
for your objectives, risk toler-
ance and time horizon. Then, au-
tomatically move the same
amount of money each month
from your checking or savings
account into the investments
youve chosen. When the price of
your investments falls, your con-
tribution will buy more shares,
and when the price rises, youll
buy fewer shares in other
words, youll be fulfilling the
buy low part of the classic in-
vestment formula. Over time, this
technique should result in a lower
average cost per investment.
Keep in mind, though, that dollar
cost averaging does not ensure a
profit or protect against loss
and youll need to have the finan-
cial resources available to con-
tinue investing, even in down
markets.
Reinvest dividends. Among
your investments, you may own
stocks that can pay dividends.
You can take these dividends as
cash, but if you dont need the
money to meet everyday ex-
penses, you may be better off by
reinvesting the dividends This is
an efficient way to increase your
shares and boosting your
share ownership in quality in-
vestmentscan be a key way to
help build wealth.
(Be aware that companies can re-
duce or discontinue dividends at
any time.)
Look for tax-efficient tech-
niques. Another type of effi-
ciency associated with investing
is tax efficiency, which refers to
your ability to defer taxes as long
as possible. Tax-deferred ac-
counts, such as a traditional IRA
or a 401(k), can help you put off
the tax bill until retirement, when
you may be in a lower tax
bracket.
Consolidate investment ac-
counts. If you have one IRA with
one financial services provider,
another IRA with a second, and a
separate investment account with
a third, you may end up paying
more in expenses, fees and com-
missions than is necessary and
since these costs can eat into your
investments real rate of return,
this scattershot ownership
method may be inefficient. You
may be better off by consolidat-
ing all your investment accounts
with one provider.
Seek to become an efficient
investor. You may be pleased
with the results.

Buff francis
Performing from 7:30 til 9:00
James Buff Francis has been a fixture in the Miami Valley
music scene for over 16 years. Hooked on music since the
age of five, he began playing guitar at 15. During his serv-
ice in the Air Force, he played in a band while stationed in
Japan. He began making a name for himself locally in the
early 90s with the band 8 Ball. He branched into the
world of acoustic music with guitarist Jeff Madewell in
2004. The duo achieved a healthy following, performing in
area clubs and festivals. His latest musical undertakings
have been with the band 2 x 2, and several acoustic proj-
ects with local musicians. Believing that the simple idea of
music can touch so many lives, James Francis will continue
to be a fixture in the Miami Valley music scene for years to
come.
Whitewing Showcases
Musical Talent
Of Popular Local Artists
Whitewing is a compilation of local musicians assembled by Erin Higgins and Jeff
Madewell for this years Fall Fling.
Along with Erin and Jeff, the band features Scott Ridenour on guitar and vocals,
bassist and vocalist Mark Cantwil, Ron Randall on keyboards, and drummer Mike
Gross.
Focusing on classic rock, Whitewing will be covering songs from bands such as
Boston, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Journey, and Uriah Heep.

Erin Higgins - Jeff Madewell

Higgins-
Madewell
Performing at 8 p.m.
The music of Higgins-
Madewell is a combination
of strong vocals, acoustic
guitar, and heartfelt origi-
nal lyrics that is difficult to
classify as one specific
genre. Their original
music, for example, ranges
from the country sound of
their very popular Like a
Stone and Little Things
to the bluesy/folky sounds
of Livin Blue and Voice
for the Children. Their
stage compatibility and
humor is often compared
to Johnny Cash and June
Carter. Their versatility,
professionalism, dedica-
tion, and genuine love for
the audience is very appar-
ent. Erin Higgins has been
blessed with an incredible
vocal range that will leave
you stunned. In addition,
she plays acoustic guitar,
harmonica, and is also
quite the fiddler/violinist.
After winning a battle with
cancer and the loss of
much of his vision, Jeff
Madewell has dedicated
himself solely to music and
the music industry.

Minster Banks Performance Achievements
Acknowledged By Banking Industry Organizations
Minster Bank has once again been described as a top-ranking community bank and a proven performer by
three independent banking industry organizations.
Independent Banker Magazine, which is published by Independent Community Bankers of America, included
Minster Bank in its list of 400 top industry performers. Community banks at the top of the rankings show a ded-
ication to the basics. They understand their markets as well as their own strengths, focusing on a few niches for
which they are well suited, Kelly Pike of the magazine wrote. They look to diversity revenue streams with every-
thing from mortgages to investment services with each step carefully analyzed and executed. As part of the an-
nual year-end performance ranking, the ICBA pulls call report data from the FDIC to identify the top 20 community
banks as measured by return on average assets (ROA) and return on average equity (ROE) ratios for all of 2012.
Within the category of banks with assets of $300-$500 million, Minster Bank was ranked seventh. This is the third
year in a row that the bank has appeared on this elite performance list.
Another respected industry publication, American Banker Magazine, published its listing of the top 200
community banks in the country in its May 2013 issue. With a ranking of sixth out of the 200 community banks
recognized, this is the third year Minster Bank has been included in this distinguished group. Banks are ranked by
a three-year average of ROE. Minster Banks average return on equity for the period was 15.00%.
Fiserv, a global provider of information management and electronic commerce systems for the financial services
industry, also annually ranks national financial institutions to identify its ranked Proven Performers. This year,
6,268 traditional deposit and lending institutions were analyzed based on growth, profitability, and risk manage-
ment. Based on the Fiserv analysis criteria, 234 institutions cleared all of the high performance hurdles. Within
this Proven Performer group, Minster Bank was ranked for the third straight year. Proven Performers understand
and balance the drivers of franchise value. Even in adverse economies, Proven Performers emerge, noted Andy
Grinstead, Fiserv senior vice president. Proven Performers are not working harder; they are working on the right
things.
Minster Bank is honored to be recognized for our performance, commented Minster Bank CEO Mark Hen-
schen. While it has never been our goal to seek banking industry acknowledgements, it is humbling when, through
independent analysis, the banks performance is recognized with an elite group of its peers. We are committed to
delivering the best customer service possible throughout all of our service lines while making available to our cus-
tomers the latest in banking technology. In addition, we are ever mindful of providing to our shareholders a solid
return on their investment. We remain strategically focused and look to continue our measured growth within all
of the markets we serve.
Minster Bank, a local community bank, is headquartered in Minster, and has offices located in Minster, New
Bremen, St. Marys, Sidney, Troy, and Wapakoneta, as well as a Vandalia Loan Production Office. Visit Minster-
Bank.com to learn more about Minster Bank.
