for companies such as Crosby Europe,
Arbil, Felco and Parsons Chain. He has
been actively involved in the LEEA since
the 1970s and served as its chair from
1999 to 2001. Jim was also chair of three
International Standards committees for
chain and chain components.
Established in 1944, the LEEA has over
520 member companies worldwide and
campaigns vigorously for higher standards of
safety within the lifting industry. In addition
to providing members with training and
expert technical advice, the association works
closely with organizations such as the Health
and Safety Executive in the preparation
of regulations and British, European and
International standards. Member companies
include those involved in the design,
manufacture, hire, repair, refurbishment, test,
examination, verification and use of lifting
equipment. Applicants are subject to an
initial technical audit before full membership
is granted, and then to a continuing
program of assessments. For large scale users
of overhead lifting equipment, associate
membership provides benefits such as access
to technical information and training,
without the need for auditing. Further details

MichaelJ.Gelskey,Jr., Vice President and
General Manager, Lift-ItManufacturing
is proud to announce the purchase of a new
facility in Pomona, California. The 40,000
square foot, multi-million dollar building
was purchased in the Mission-71 Business

the world. We made the purchase when I
finally convinced my father that he could
not see the floor in our existing facility.
Every available square inch was allocated
to finished stock, inventory and works
in process. The new work flow process,
machinery acquisitions and production
personnel expansion will be necessary for
the numerous marketing, sales and training
programs we are preparing to unveil.
Chief Executive Officer, MikeGelskey,
Sr. stated, I am extremely pleased with
the planning and layout that Junior did to
streamline our production, strengthening
our business and marketing plans.California

Holland 1916 Rugged RFID Tags Aids
in Mine Inspection and Safety
Holland1916 proudly announces a rugged
RFID Nameplate Tag for automating the
inspection and audit process for mining,
construction, and oil rigs. Together with
partner, Tri-StateWireRopeSupplyInc.,
the RFID inspection and audit solution
has proven to increase efficiency and accuracy
in conducting inspections while saving
money in reduction of audit incidences
and reducing the paper trail for a large
mining company.
The paper intensive inspection process
is poor because reports can get lost, are
hard to track, and inputting them into a
computer system is labor-intensive, said
NickRoberts, Sales at Tri-State Wire Rope
Supply. Whats more, mistakes can be made
inputting information by hand and can lead
to expensive fines.
Mining companies are audited frequently
and equipment such as fire extinguishers
need to be inspected every six months
according to MineSafetyandHealth
Administration(MSHA)Title30CFR
75.1100-3. To ensure that inspectors
checked the safety equipment as required,
Holland 1916s stainless steel embedded
RFID Nameplate Tags are attached to the
location stations of the safety equipment.
Inspectors and auditors carry handheld RFID
readers to the safety equipment locations
and upload an automated record of time,
location, personnel, and equipment status
to the inspection software.
Holland 1916s ability to embed RFID
into stainless steel nameplates with custom
chemical etching allows RFID to survive
the harshest environments. Holland 1916
provides RFID enabled tags with custom
branding, human readable markings,
multiple attachment types, and RFID
encoding. Tri-State Wire Rope Supply Inc.

the construction of the new national stadium
ArenaNaional, which was officially
inaugurated at the beginning of August
2011. The arena, which measures 210 meters
long and 190 meters wide, can accommodate
55,000 spectators and is the largest football
stadium in the country. It will also host
UEFAChampionsLeaguegames. The
video module, which is 11.5 meters wide,
9 meters long and 9.2 meters high, is
installed above the center of the playing field.
Visitors to the stadium can follow events on
the pitch in high detail and perfect image
quality on four 32-square meter displays.
Dr.ThomasBnker, Head of
Components at DemagCranes, states:
We had already realized a similar project
at the Commerzbank Arena, the former
Waldstadion in Frankfurt am Main,
Germany. The experience we gained there
was valuable and enabled us to manage the
many challenges resulting from the tight
schedule to the satisfaction of all concerned.
Gunnebo Johnson and Franklin Ofshore
Land Asian Hercules III Project
Recently GunneboJohnsonCorporation
landed the prestigious AsianHerculesIII
project, together with FranklinOffshore in
Singapore. Over the next twenty five months
from then the crane ship will be designed,
tested, manufactured and delivered. Mark
Monteiro, VP Special Projects, and his specially
appointed team are now focusing on providing
lifting tackles, blocks, equalizer beams, and
sheaves for one of the largestcraneships in
the world for the offshore business.
This is a one hundred percent special
design by our engineering team, specifically
for this valued customer, Mark Monteiro,
VP Special Projects at Gunnebo Johnson
Corporation, states.
Mark has overall responsibility for the
project at Gunnebo Johnson. He says he and
his team are more than happy to be working
with the Asian Hercules III project.
This is the largest order in history for
the entire corporation. Were delighted to be
a part of such a large and important piece of
work, says JoeBridgeman, Vice President,
International Sales and Marketing.
Gunnebo started working on the Asian
Hercules III project back in 2008. But the
enormous investment was held off due
to the world economic crisis at the time.
In February of 2011 the owner of Asian
Hercules III, Asian Lift Pte., finally brought
the project back to the table. Joe Bridgeman,
Vice President, International Sales and
Marketing, and KenSellers, Vice President
of Engineering at Gunnebo Johnson, were
the ones who concluded the deal in China.
Asian Lift Pte. is a long-time and loyal
customer. The key to our satisfied customers
is the innovative lifting beam design that weve
created. Its lighter and stronger compared to
traditional lifting beam systems, Ken Sellers,
VP of Engineering says.
Mark Monteiro worked for Gunnebo
Johnson for over twenty years and has a
unique experience and knowledge. He was
also involved in the Asian Hercules II project,
initiated in 1996. Even though he was in
retirement by 2010, Gunnebo Johnson asked
him to come back in May 2011, to lead the
Asian Hercules III program forward and to
assure the Gunnebo Johnson tackle system
was completed and delivered on schedule.
The similarities between the two projects
are very strong apart from the fact that
everything is much bigger this time around.
Asian Hercules III is like a big sister, with
greater reach and much higher lifting capacity.
Its a spectacular piece of lifting equipment.
Mark Monteiros role is to direct all activities
and coordinate the products, regardless if they
are manufactured in USA, Italy, Mexico or any
other country. All will be shipped
to the shipyard in Nantong,
China, where the vessel and
the crane itself will be built and
assembled. The design of the
project is modular; but due to the
size of the assemblies, one of the
major challenges will be to ship
and handle the physical size of
the enormous parts.
Some of the parts will
weigh over one hundred tons,
simply because its impossible
to make them any smaller. We
need to pre-assemble them
for fit, disassemble them into
modules for handling, and get
them to the vessel without damaging the parts
or the paint.
Gunnebo Johnsons manufacturing team
consists of about 180 employees in total
and will produce most of the parts for Asian
Hercules III. By the end of Q1 in 2013 the
company will supply over 1000 tons of steel
plates, castings, and forging products made
into a sophisticated lifting system.

U.S. Takes Large Step to Ofshore
Wind Power Implementation
President Obamas fiscal year 2013 budget
request includes $164.1 million to fund the
recently established BureauofOceanEnergy
Management(BOEM), which oversees the
environmentally responsible development
of vital conventional and renewableenergy
resources in Federal waters offshore of the
United States.
FY 2013 funding will be critical
to advance key priorities, including
implementing the Five-Year Outer
Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Leasing
Program for 2012 2017 and conducting
the first oil and gas lease sale under the new
program in the first quarter of FY 2013.
Our priorities are advancing the
Administrations commitment to a
comprehensive energy strategy that encourages
safe and responsible production of domestic
oil and gas resources and expanding the
development of renewable sources of energy,
said BOEM Director TommyP.Beaudreau.
The budget proposes a modest increase
of $3.3 million, or two percent, above the FY
2012 enacted level. The requested increases
reflect careful analysis of the resources needed
to develop the bureaus capacity and to
execute its functions carefully, responsibly
and efficiently, with limited increases to
support renewable energy lease auctions
and environmental studies, and funding
otherwise level with last years request.
This bureaus predecessor historically
lacked sufficient resources to keep pace
with expanding development of offshore oil
and gas and renewable energy resources,
Beaudreau added. We have been pleased
over the last fiscal year to see that these
critical resources are provided, particularly
as they relate to investing in robust science
to inform decisions relating to ocean energy
policy and management and appropriate
environmental safeguards. It is imperative to
sustain this level of investment moving into
the next fiscal year.
The FY 2013 request is a continuation
of the Obama Administrations plan to
complete the reorganization of the former
Minerals Management Service. BOEMs
responsibilities include long-term resource
management planning through development
of the Five-Year Outer Continental Shelf
Oil and Gas Leasing Program and designing
offshore oil and gas lease sales in a way that
makes these resources available, encourages
diligent development, protects communities
and the environment, and ensures a fair
return to the America taxpayer.
BOEM also oversees the development of
clean, renewable energy resources, such as wind
power off of Americas coasts. The offshore
renewable energy programs responsibilities
include implementing the Secretarys Smart
from the Start initiative to accelerate leasing
in wind energy areas off of U.S. coasts.
Additional details on the Presidents FY
2013 budget request are available online at
http://www.doi.gov/budget/.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy
Management manages the exploration and
development of the nations offshore energy
and mineral resources. The bureau seeks
to balance economic development, energy
production, and environmental protection
through oil and gas leasing, renewable energy
development and environmental reviews
and studies.

President & Coo, delta rigging & Tools
You were with Southwest Wire Rope for
almost 20 years through many transitions,
what did you learn from your experience? And
is there anything you would do dierently?
I was actually with Southwest for nearly 30 years, and
I think my biggest lesson was probably that you are
only as good as the organization that surrounds you and
that it takes a real team efort for any business to grow
and succeed. Everything Ive done and gone through
has been a learning experience and I wouldnt do a
thing diferently.
You had been out of the business for a year
before joining Delta Rigging and Tools as
their new President & COO, what have you
been up to over this past year?
I actually thought I had retired, but my wife had
other plans (Retirement is the only job Ive ever been
fred from!)
Hows your experience with Delta Rigging
& Tools going?
Its like living a dream. Its a great company, with great
people and tremendous opportunity. Te product line
here is so diverse, and the quality of our products and
vendor relations is exceptional. Its really fun working
with and learning about such an extensive product line
(in both sales and rentals), as well as developing new
markets and new customers.
Where do you see Delta in one year/
ve years?
We feel confdent that we have a plan in place that
will support our continued, rapid growth over the
next fve years.
What are your top three short-term goals for
the company?
Sustained growth based on:
1. Maintaining current quality of personnel
2. Adding to that bench strength with the addition
of equally high-quality personnel
3. Continuing to provide our customers with
high-quality products, services and value.
What challenges do you face
in your new role?
We have so many opportunities for
growth here, its really about keeping up
with the pace of growth and leveraging
the opportunities that are coming our
way (basically learning how to drink
from a frehose!).
How have you seen things
change in the Industry? Do
you see anything that needs
improvement?
Like all businesses today the biggest change is just in the
rate of speed that things happen - in e-commerce, just in
time delivery, customer and internal communications,
the web, social networks and more. Tere are always
things to improve, but at Delta right now were really
focusing on the things were doing right and making
sure we continue to do them to provide industry-leading
support for our customers.
What are you most proud of about our industry
or from your experience in the industry?
Te great friends that Ive made throughout the years!
In 1979, when you initially joined WireCo, what drew you to
the business?
i
had just graduated from Missouri Western State University with a degree
in secondary education and a teaching certifcate and was looking for a job.
A family neighbor was the sales manager at WireCo and had an opening. I
interviewed for the position and received the job and havent looked back since.

Each acquisition that Peerless made has
broadened and strengthened the company in
diferent ways. Te acquisition of Weissenfels
was Peerlesss frst step towards a global
presence: Steve Lister, who ran Weissenfels,
had years of experience running a chain
plant in Italy. He now uses his international
connections and experience to head up an
international department for Peerless the frst
in the companys history.
Te acquisition of ACCO was
remarkable for its timing, and came at a
crucial point for Peerless. If you look at the
milestones in our history, thats probably one
of the biggest ones, explains Tom Wynn,
President of Peerless. Wed gotten to a
point in 2005 where George [Kosidowski,
Executive Vice President] and his group
were basically outselling our capacity to
make product. It was fortunate and a little
serendipitous that we approached the owners
of ACCO and they were interested in getting
out of the chain business.

Tis acquisition gave Peerless a facility in
Jeannette, PA, which handles much of the
manufacturing for the custom lifting and heavy
lifting industries, but ACCO did not want
to sell their main facility in York, PA. In the
summer of 2006, Peerless hauled 220 tractor
trailer-loads of equipment, supplies, tools,
and inventory a thousand miles northwest
to Winona. To integrate all of it, Peerless
undertook a massive rearrangement of the
Winona facility that doubled its production
capacity. ACCO was also the gateway to the
marine market: Peerless installed a hot dip
galvanizing facility, and thanks to ACCOs
expertise and equipment, it now produces
high-quality chain for marine use. Peerless
was also able to increase its maximum chain
size from 5/8 to 1.
Te acquisition of Letellier was a long
time in the making. When Peerless frst
approached Letellier, the time wasnt
right, but six years later, in 2010, Peerless
approached the company again and the
owner was ready to retire. Letellier is
especially valuable to Peerless because its
manufacturing facility outside of Chicago
allows for a high degree of customization,
which Peerless passes on to its customers.
Te companys most recent acquisition
was the Security Chain Company just months
ago in 2011. In addition to its manufacturing
facility in Oregon, Security operates a facility in
Japan stafed almost entirely by local Japanese
employees who understand the countrys
business culture. Security has also brought a
number of exciting new traction and cargo
control products to the company toolbox.
Tese four acquisitions have allowed
Peerless to truly take of, branch into new
industries, and lay the groundwork for the
future as a global company. However, the
word acquisition often brings up negative
connotations: efective processes retooled into
less efective ones, sprawling bureaucracies, and
lower workplace quality of life for staf. Peerless
is determined not to be that way. Wynn says,
When we acquire a company, we make sure
that we acknowledge and respect the culture
they have. Going forward, we make sure they
know theyve got a seat at the table and that
theyre going to be welcomed into the Peerless
family. Peerlesss engineering and management

teams have been able to learn from the
companies theyve acquired and build on
those companies strengths.
In order to grow through acquisition,
especially during a recession, Peerless has
focused on acquisitions that are well timed,
build a client base across multiple industries,
and are strategically focused. Te ACCO
acquisition was just the right thing at the right
time to break the company out of stasis in
2005, and the Letellier and Security acquisitions
gave Peerless more fexibility in manufacturing
and a wider range of products. As a result,
Peerlesss sales are spread broadly across
industries, with government, retail, industrial,
rigging, and OEM being the top fve.
Coupled with Peerlesss broad client
base is their specialized focus. While many
manufacturers have chosen to branch out
into diferent product types ofering tools in
addition to chain, for example Peerless has
chosen to remain in essentially the same line
of business for 95 years. George Kosidowski,
Executive Vice President, notes, While weve
grown and added businesses, we havent lost
focus and become distracted. Its continually:
how do we keep bringing more value to the
customer we service, day in and day out?
Te company has no qualms about remaining
focused on chain, as, according to Wynn,
chain will always be the best material for some
applications. We tell people that were still
manufacturing a product that goes back to
biblical times, and continuing to grow with it.
It has its particular niche and it has its particular
uses that are not going away.
Improving on their ancient product is
one of several challenges the company faces.
It requires a skilled engineering team that is
dedicated to their work: in one case, a Peerless
engineer spent a fair amount of time observing
how their chain works in the feld. Te
company works continually with steel mills
and suppliers to tweak recipes for the steel itself,
and also continues to improve their fnishes.
Since American companies are competing with
cheaper imports, continuous improvement and
high quality are more important now than ever.
Kosidowski notes, Were not going to compete
on a wage base; weve got to compete on a
performance base against global companies.
Making a high-performance product
requires dedicated and skilled workers on the
front lines as well as on the engineering and

administrative back end. Wynn notes that it
has been more dif cult in recent decades to
fnd mechanically-inclined employees, since
many younger adults dont earn technical or
vocational degrees and fewer have grown up
working with farm equipment or fxing
cars as a hobby. Peerless often fnds itself
drawing employees from nearby, larger
cities, and ofering some of the best wages
in town as an incentive.
Another challenge, Wynn notes, has
been striking a fnancial balance between
growth and spending. You have to fnd
the balance where youre not getting a
tremendous amount of overhead creep, but
youre also investing in the human capital
you need to keep going forward. Given
that Peerless has grown from 220 employees
in 2005 to 425 today, this balancing act has
not been easy and will continue to play a
larger role the more the company grows.
Te last and most ideological challenge
that Peerless currently faces is remaining true
to its roots. When a company grows by an
order of magnitude in under a decade, its easy
for it to lose touch and become impersonal,
and/or infexible. To eliminate any chance
of this happening, and strike a balance
between growth and customer service, Peerless
emphasizes customer service and contact with
its customers of all sizes. According to Troy
Baumgartner, Marketing Manager, Te key is
our strong relationships that we have with all
the customers that we deal with.
Another aspect of customer service is
that Peerless welcomes customer feedback to
make improvements in their products and
their organization, and has chosen to remain
fexible in manufacturing. Even though
weve gotten bigger, were still an extremely
fexible company, Wynn says. We try to
work with our customers: we dont want to
give them just plain vanilla. Well do short
runs; well do specials.
On the employee and community
side, the company strives to be a proactive,
positive force in the areas where it operates.
Peerless has received awards from the
Winona Chamber of Commerce for being
a community leader, and encourages
community leadership among its employees
as well. Some Peerless staf can be found
delivering for Meals on Wheels during the
workday, since the company allows employees
to take time of for volunteering. As Wynn
puts it, We strive to have this be the place
where people want to come to work.
Te companys overall plan is large-scale:
Peerless plans to continue making strategic
acquisitions that ft with their business plan,
increase their market share lead, and grow
organically to become the global leader in
chain manufacturing. But their frst priority
is, as Wynn puts it, never losing sight
of where we came from. Perhaps what
is really special about Peerless right now
is that the company strives to apply its
small-business attitude and ethics on a
large-business scale. Tis attitude is well
summed up in Tom Wynns advice to
anyone starting out in this business: Never,
ever compromise your integrity. Make sure
you are who you are. Treat people with
respect and dignity, listen to what they
have to say, and most importantly, surround
yourself with good people with good
character, and trust that theyre going
to do the right thing.
We tell people that were still manufacturing
a product that goes back to biblical times,
and continuing to grow with it. It has its
particular niche and it has its particular uses
that are not going away.

Tung-Yen (T.Y.) Lin was the fourth child of 11 children
born in Fazhou, China to a justice of the ROC Supreme
Court. He began his training in engineering at the tender
age of 14 and earned his masters in civil engineering
from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1933.
After working in China for the Ministry of Railways
where he was responsible for constructing over 1,000
bridges, Lin returned to Berkeley as faculty in 1946. It
was at Berkeley where Lin took French engineer Eugene
Freyssinets original prestressed concrete designs and
began to tweak them.
Lin worked on solving two problems; concretes
natural pre-disposition for tensile weakness and steels
propensity to become brittle. By combining the two,
prestressed concrete was resistant to compression,
much stronger, and able to endure the tests of both
time and Mother Nature.
Often referred to as Mr. Prestressed Concrete, Lin
founded T.Y. Lin International in 1954 and began an
illustrious and decorated career conceiving, designing and
constructing some of the worlds best airports, buildings,
bridges, roads, ports and railways. Just a few you may
have heard of include; Te 1800 Pacifc Building in
San Francisco, San Frans Moscone Convention Centre
(250,000 sq. ft. column-free exhibit hall), the Kuan Du
Bridge in Taiwan and the Hoover Dam ByPass Bridge.
But prestressed concrete wasnt just functional to
T.Y. Lin its ability to create unique shapes allowed him
to create things of beauty. Lin said, Te engineering
approach should be a global vision of the bridge. To ft
the environment and to express the structural forces and
moments, and nature itself.
To T.Y. Lin, the Bering and Gibraltar Straits must
have been the holy grails of his profession challenging
him both intellectually and philosophically.
Lin was technically certain enough in 1986 that the
feat of bridging the Bering Strait could be accomplished
to hand over a 16-page building plan to President
Ronald Reagan while receiving the National Medal
of Science Award.
With the Seward Peninsula of Alaska to the east, and Chukotskiy Poluostrovof Siberia to the
west, the Bering Strait separates the United States and the Russian Federation by only 90
kilometers. It is named for Danish explorer Vitus Bering, who spotted the Alaskan mainland
in 1741 while leading an expedition of Russian sailors. This view of the region was captured
by MISRs vertical-viewing (nadir) camera on August 18, 2000 during Terra orbit 3562.

His philosophical reasons? Teyre certainly lofty. Lin literally
wanted to help bridge a global society, envisioning social and
political peace. To promote a speaking engagement at the University
of Bufalo in 1997, Lin spoke of combining philosophy with
science. My one unique capacity is I embody Chinese philosophical
approach and deal with problems in a global manner. Basic science
and technology I learned, especially from the West. I sort of put
the two together.
But just how would he do it? Lets take a look at Lins plans for
both the Bering and Gibraltar Strait bridges.
Bering Strait: The Intercontinental Peace Bridge
Peace was certainly a decisive motivator when Lin designed his Bering
Strait Bridge that would link six continents. In 1968, the cold war
arms race was a reality and Lin compared the cost of building a bridge
(which he estimated at an incredibly frugal $4 billion at the time) to
the $600 billion annual defense budgets of the U.S. and Russia. Te
mutual understanding generated by this cooperative undertaking would
contribute to a decline in the arms race, so that the bridge cost could
be justifed many times over. Te potentially positive impact on world
peace makes its planning and construction a top priority worthy of
further consideration.
By the 1990s, Lin had changed his tactical tune. Even if peace
was still his personal goal, he realized there was a stronger argument
to make. Money.
Ive switched to an economic front. You see, the bridge will cost
a few billion dollars. Te road on both sides will cost $50 billion. Te
petroleum resources are worth trillions of dollars. But to get to the oil
and gas you need roads. And you need the pipeline.
CHALLENGES
Te Bering Strait is a gap across time and space specifcally the
International dateline and about 55 miles at its shortest distance
between Russias Siberia and the USAs Alaska, just south of the Arctic
Circle. Although the depth of the water is no more than 180 ft., and the
currents arent described as severe its arctic proximity brings other issues.
Namely average daily lows of -4 degrees F that can plunge to -58 degrees
F and long, very dark winters that would not be conducive to any kind of
construction. As well, ice that can be 6 ft thick constantly foes for up to
eight months of the year, creating a potential force of 5,000 short tons.
Although the Alaska Earthquake Information Centre describes
the area as aseismic (surface displacement along a fault in absence
of earthquakes), the area on the northern boundary of the Bering
microplate is prone to seismic shifts.
As well, the area is remote in the extreme its 1,200 road-less,
train-less miles on the Russian side, and not much better on the
American, with 500 miles to the closest highway. Estimates to build
any such highway have come in at about $5 million per mile.
DESIGN
According to a July/August, 1987 edition of PCI Journal, Lin designed
his bridge to have three decks; the top deck for vehicles (weather
permitting), a second level box for trains and the third lower box for
the all important oil and gas pipes. Te bridge is comprised of two
parts the substructure and the superstructure.
220 precast, prestressed gravity piers would be constructed in
one or two pieces - a double-curved cylindrical tower that could go a
maximum of 180 feet under water and 80 to 200 feet above water that
would be connected to a low base raft bottom slab. Each pier would
be sized according to their position and depth of water in the Strait,
curved in just the right spot to defect those nasty ice foes. Constructed
in a dry basin before moving to a protected water site (ofshore oil rig
construction protocols), each pier would consist of about 25,000 cubic
yards of concrete. A ballast is placed inside each pier for additional
stability. By prefabricating the piers, both the raft and towers can be
built at the same time, therefore shortening the construction time.
Joined by post-tensioning, the raft and tower would be towed to their
prepared foundations and sunk into position.
Te total amount of concrete used in the substructure? 5,500,000
cubic yards. Mind you, that includes 20 pounds of pre-stressing
tendons and 50 pounds of reinforcing steel in each yard.
Often called the greatest structural
engineer in the world, Lin pioneered
the use of prestressed concrete,
combining the tensile strength
of steel with concretes resistance
to compression.

In 1958, T.Y. Lin

of constructing a
bridge across the
Bering Strait, known
as the Intercontinental
Peace Bridge.
WIRE ROPE EXCHANGE MARCH-APRIL 2012 31
T.Y. LiN INTERNATIONAl
Lin calculated the optimum deck length for the 220 double
cantilever spans stayed by two pairs of heavy duty steel cables for the
superstructure at about 1,200 feet (with 80 vertical clearances to water).
However two spans of 1,800 feet east and west of the Diomede Islands
that have 200 vertical clearance would be required for ship traf c.
Lin spoke of the plan to coat everything, including the cables in
concrete. Tats important from two points of view; Number one,
the concrete protects the steel. It simplifes maintenance in an icy area.
Number two, it stifens the bridge, so its not just hanging from rope.
Te only concrete-free portion would be the expansion joints but
even they would be rust coated.
Superstructure lightweight concrete total? 3,330,000 cubic
yards. Steel? 100 pounds of pre-stressing tendons plus 120 pounds
of reinforcing steel per cubic yard.
Estimates of 4 to 5 years were given to manufacture and
assemble the 20,000 ton spans that would be transported to the site
via catamaran. But, as its only possible to work in the Bering Strait
for 5 months of the year, the whole process would likely resemble
a very intricate, choreographed dance.
Te Discovery Channel recently estimated the costs to build Lins
Intercontinental Peace Bridge at about $25 Billion. However, they also
estimated a further $110 Billion to build the necessary infrastructure
to get there.
Although recent reports have emerged that a tunnel is the more
likely reality for the Bering Strait, with Te Daily Mail reporting on
Aug. 22, 2011 that Russia had given the green light to a 65 mile long
tunnel, it couldnt even be constructed without using T.Y. Lins research.
Gibraltar Strait Bridge
Te Strait of Gibraltar separates the British colony of Gibraltar in Spain
from Morocco, Africa, by a mere 8 miles at its shortest distance. Te
famed Rock of Gibraltar rises 1398 ft from the sea and, adorned with
silver columns, marked safe navigation limits for ancient Mediterranean
navigators. Lins dream would link the Christian and Islamic cultures
and promote trade.
Te bridge would feature 5 traf c lanes and accommodate a
break-down lane in each direction.
CHALLENGES
Although Gibraltar certainly doesnt have the Bering Straits ice or
darkness issues, there are two others that have proved insurmountable
until Lins design solutions. Water and wind.
Water depth in the Gibraltar Strait ranges between 980 and 3,000
feet. Winds have been clocked at 140 miles per hour.
Engineers hired by the Spanish government to research the
feasibility of a bridge discovered the bottom of the Strait was
extremely hard rock.
As well, fog, Sahara Desert dust storms, strong currents and the
frequency of ship collisions in the busy Strait are also dangerous issues.
DESIGN
So what does a bridge builder suggest when faced with trying to place
piers in 3,000 ft depths? Span it. Instead of even attempting to set piers
in 3,000 ft of water, Lins hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge would
have two spans of an incredible 16,400 ft each. Tat would allow piers
to be set in the relatively (emphasis on the word relatively) easy depths
of 1500 ft and 500 ft.
Each of the bridges two cantilevered towers would have to be
3,000 ft tall, and cant out slightly from the centerline. Te cables
run from the tops of the towers would be transversely set at 660 ft.
To deal with the winds, Lin would stifen the structure by drawing
the main cables together with transversely placed, post-tensioned
bracing cables. At mid-span they would be only 130 apart.
Suspender cables would angle inward from the main suspension
cables to carry the fberglass bridge deck.
Total amount of wire cable? 1,000,000 miles or enough to go
around the world almost 30 times.
Te last estimate given to build Lins Gibraltar Bridge was $15 Billion.
If man had never dreamed of going to the moon, we wouldnt
have GPS or satellites. And if T.Y. Lin hadnt dreamed of linking
the world, millions may have died in buildings unable to withstand
earthquakes. Tanks to T.Y. Lin, the question isnt can we build it?
but can we aford to build it?
T.Y. Lin left the world with a lasting legacy of ingenuity
and inspiration.
T.Y. Lin died of a heart attack in 2003 at the age of 91.

using the more and more common wire ropes of grade 2160.
Made from carbon steel, the T-LOCTM ferrule reinforces
the standard aluminum T-ferrule termination. When using
a high tensile wire rope of grade 2160 together with a
heavy-duty thimble, the T-LOCTM prevents the aluminum
ferrule from splitting. T-LOC TM is swaged together with
the aluminum ferrule. Greater strength is achieved with the
same time and eort.
The T-LOCTM system is easy and safe to use, tested
with rotation resistant wire ropes in class 35(W) x 7 and
has been validated according to EN 13411-3. The tested
constructions are 34(W) x K7-WSC, ll factor: 0,74-0,75.

WHATS NEW HARRINGTON HOISTS
UNVEILS ED INFINITY SINGLE PHASE
ELECTRIC CHAIN HOISTS
Elite Sales Inc. (ESI) has recently acquired a 30-ton
reeling machine for custom wire rope in order to spool
wire rope more e ciently. Currently, spoolers and reeling
machines are replacing the outdated ways of coiling
wire rope. Traditionally, the most di cult part of properly
spooling wire rope has been creating the correct amount
of back tension in order to properly spool wire rope.
In the past, back tension was cre-
ated by passing the wire rope through
multiple sheaves which are tightened
by bolts in order to create the tension.
Even worse, one of the oldest ways to
coil wire rope required the rope to be
placed between two large tires while being spooled. Although
this method is still used by other businesses, the technique is
denitely outdated and doesnt cause the proper amount of
back tension needed to properly coil wire rope without causing
damage to the rope itself.
ESIs new 30-ton reeling machine manufactured by
Cumberland Sales Company of Nashville, TN, provides
the perfect amount of back tension needed for proper
wire rope spooling. Even coiling wire rope with winches
could lead to uneven coiling and a weak foundation
of layers which in turn can (and often does) result in
damaged cables and wire rope.
With ESIs new 30-ton reeling machine, damaging
wire rope and cables during the spooling process is a
thing of the past. Any new technology that we can invest
in to provide our customers with a better product is, and
always will be, ESIs top prioritysaid, Keith Benhayon,
Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Elite Sales
Inc. The results that all of our state-of-the-art equipment
provide speaks for it self.

WHATS NEW BOSCARO AND
EAGLE WEST CRANES INTRODUCE
INNOVATIVE CONCRETE BUCKET
New from Boscaro and Eagle West Cranes &
Equipment is a multi-function 5 in 1 concrete
bucket which allows users the exibility of owning
one bucket for several applications. Eagle Wests crane
service company has often used this type of product
for projects its own cranes were used on. We saw the
opportunity to engineer a new, more user friendly
concept in concrete buckets, said Gerry Wiebe,
Vice President Sales & Business Development for
Eagle West Cranes & Equipment.
The central discharge concrete bucket features
a counter-sprung box gate, which simplies its use,
especially when lling column forms. The discharge
slide can be set for in- or out-of-service without
removing it. However, it can be removed if necessary,
by pulling two bolts.
Other features make one bucket useful for a number
of applications. For example, the bottom platform
converts the box gate into a six-inch central discharge
bucket, excellent for use in applying roong gravel
and other dry feed products. The variable length rubber
hose converts the standard bucket into a precision
placement system, such as for lling tight forms or
columns. The bottom platform also allows the bucket
to be used by a forklift. When not in use, the solid
central bridle can be removed to allow the buckets
to be stacked for storage.
Eagle West is actively seeking dealers and sales
agents for the Boscaro product line. One such company
is Certied Boom Repair Service Inc., Tampa, Fla.,
which distributes Boscaro crane accessories in Florida.
We felt it was a natural extension of our already existing
service and repair business to be able to oer our
customers material handling accessories,said Mike
Smith, President. The full Boscaro product line includes
pallet forks, self-dumping bins, concrete buckets,
two and four person man baskets, clamshell buckets,
precast handling equipment, and storage solutions.
