Environment Combating Pollution with "Natural Air Filters"

Expo Freight recently gave World Environment Day a novel twist when it distributed 'natural air filters' to more than a thousand Sri Lankans in and around Colombo where pollution is highest. The most natural air filter being plants, there were over 1,000 plant saplings distributed that day. On this day, vehicles owners who waited in line to refuel their vehicles at five fuel stations strategically located around the city were gifted with different jak, mango, jambu, ambarella, lemon, kohomba, seeni nelli, mahogany and avacado saplings which they were requested to plant in their gardens.

The crux of this initiative was the comparison of a plant (one day a tree) to an air filter. Just as a vehicle's air filter cleans emissions, so would a tree help purify the environment. In fact it is green, eco-friendly and has a longer shelf life. Carbon emissions have been identified as one of the major causes of global warming which, in turn, leads to natural disasters such as floods and Tsunamis.

This programme was done in line with the 2012 theme for World Environment Day - "Green Economy: Does it include you?". The UN Environment Programme defines the Green Economy as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low in carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive. Earth Hour awareness program

We took part in Earth Hour, demonstrating our commitment towards addressing climate change issues. We launched an awareness campaign among our employees and business partners about the impact of climate change and the Earth Hour initiative. The message was communicated through the company intranet, internet and also print media. In an effort to engage as many players to make the world a better place to live, we took our commitment to a national level. A radio campaign delivering environment tips were aired for 2 weeks.

In line with this year's Earth Hour global campaign of "I Will if You Will", we launched a challenge to people requesting them to 'Go Beyond the Hour' and do something for the environment. It could be something simple as planting a tree, recycling plastic bottles, refraining from using plastic bags etc. They could log on to the Face Book page, show the commitment and receive a free and exclusive Earth Hour T-Shirt.

Educating Students on Global Warming

An awareness campaign to educate students about Global Warming and Climate Change was conducted by the undergraduates of the University of Moratuwa representing AIESEC. Powered by Expo Freight, it reached 5000 students in 20+ schools by the end of the project and encourage them to join hands by being responsible citizens. Educational material on the importance of Global Warming was displayed in class rooms and notice boards while questionnaires to measure the level of understanding of global warming were also distributed. Water Project Potable Water Health is the greatest of all possessions Rainwater harvesting for potable use is important for consistent water and health. Potable water is free from pollution, harmful organisms and impurities. It reduces energy and dependence on centralized distribution system. We have started our first project with Thiruvalluvar School in Karaikal,Tamilnadu, India and once successful, plan to introduce the same in adjacent villages. EFL India is engaged in a school project with Thiruvallur Ethical Education Service in Tamilnadu, India. This school aims in providing ethical-based quality education to the deprived children, free of cost. They have student strength of 250, out of which 75 are sponsored by us, to include education and meals.

Recently, to motivate these children, we organized "SPARK", a creative and interactive workshop. The response we received to this workshop enthuse us to organize similar interactive sessions and we will continue to ignite a spark in their minds to dream of a better future.

Mobile Container Toilet

We were one of the first companies to venture into Jaffna town in Sri Lanka at the end of the war 30 years old war. We identified the need for basic infrastructure developments as key. Having spoken to the mayor of Jaffna, their most important requirement was for basic sanitation. The container conversion to mobile toilets consisted of eight toilets and two washrooms. Road Project

As a part of helping out the community we live in we re-constructed a road at Orugodawatte (Sri Lanka) which leads the pathway to the warehouse. This is an area where many other warehouses are located and throughout the road more than 55 families are housed. This road built with a lot of plants on the sides has now improved the standard of the locality Learn to Earn Project

EFL India is planning their next project with "Future Family for Children". Families for Children (FFC) is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian agency operating homes that not only cares for hundreds of destitute children and women in India, but is also a home for mentally and physically challenged children, and an orphanage. It has a large Special Care Center for mentally and or physically handicapped children.

EFL is basically planning to contribute towards their Training Center under Learn to Earn project to help them become independent.
