Subject: Certification of exposure device operators- Request for Support from the Radiography Industry

Dear Licensee: The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, (CNSC) is in the process of replacing the current Regulatory Guide G-229, Certification ofExposure Device Operators which has been used as the basis for certifying persons to become Certified Exposure Device Operators (CEDOs) since 2004. This initiative has been supported by various representatives from the Canadian radiography industry, and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) who is assisting in the development of the new regulatory standard for exposure device operator certification for the CNSC. As part of the new CEDO certification program, CSA with the input of representatives from industry has developed a new certification exam for new applicants. A beta test has been created to help select questions for the final version of the new CEDO exam, which will be based on the results of this testing. The CNSC and CSA are seeking the help of 100 CEDOs to participate in this beta test, which will be available until December 20,2013. Beta testing would involve current CEDOs writing a mock exam made up of multiple-choice questions. The exam will be available online and could be taken at anyone of several Kr erion test centres) used by the CSA for testing purposes. The beta test results will be used to set the CEDO exam for new applicants and the passing grade for certification. To meet our objective, the CNSC is requesting that licensees volunteer CEDOs from their organizations to challenge the beta test. With this type of response, the target of 100 participants will be achieved and the examination can be finalized in a timely fashion. If the CNSC is unsuccessful in attracting the target number, the beta test will be performed by new applicants and the passing grade will be determined by a CNSC/CSA technical advisory committee. This standard will remain in place until the CSA has the data and time to evaluate whether the passing grade is appropriate and may impact the success rate of new applicants. Therefore, your utmost attention and collaboration is needed for this initiative in order to better serve your interests as licensees hiring CEDOs.
