What is electro-deionization (EDI)?

Electro-deionization (ED1) combines two, well established, water treatment methods; electro-dialysis and ion exchange by means of ion exchanger resins This technique makes it possible anode to remove dissolved salts without chemical regeneration, at low cost in terms of the energy used.

Description of the EDI process Before being fed into the electro-deionization module the permeate produced by the reverse osmosis system is divided into three sub-streams. The EDI feed water is passed through the diluate chambers, which, are filled with ion exchange resin. Through the action of the electric field the anions migrate through the resin bed in the direction of the anode. As a result they pass through the anion-permeable membrane and arrive in the adjacent stream of concentrate. The cations migrate through the resin bed in the direction of the cathode, pass through the cation-permeable membrane, and so likewise enter the stream of concentrate. With the concentrate stream, the ions are expelled from the module. The electrolyte stream flushes out the gases that are created at the electrodes, along with the ions, and carry them cut of the module
+ As a result of the electrical voltage, water splitting occurs in the resin bed of the diluate chamber The H and OH ions that are needed for the regeneration of the exchange resin are created. These regenerate the resin bed on an ongoing basis. In this way continuous operation can be maintained, without any need to switch oft the system for regeneration purposes.

Model shown EDI2200

Ultra Pure EDI Unit System comprises of: Vertical frame system for desalination of softened drinking water operating on the principle of reverse osmosis (R0) in conjunction with the electro-deionization (EDI). Unit design Stainless steel frame with plastic front panel housing the instruments and controls. Pressure reducing valve to limit the input pressure, special inlet filter with 5 pm filter cartridge, high pressure multi-stage centrifugal type low noise pump, low energy spirally wound modules with energy-efficient PAIPS composite membranes in GRP vessels with liner. Electro-delonization module for continuous desalination of the RO permeate, consisting of a carefully designed robust housing containing a series of special ion selective membranes which create alternating concentrate and desalination chambers filled with mixed-bed ion exchanges resins. Two special electrodes are used to create a DC electric field across the chambers.
