It's a fact.
The car you ride in, the plane that flies you thousands of miles in just a few hours, the barrel of 1-our shotgun-yes, even the porcelain enamel on 1-our kitchen stove or sink, have most likely, at one stage or another, been subjected to the scientific inspection processes created by Magnaflux Corporatioh.
The Magnaflux engineer who rolls up his sleeves to pitch in with production or engineering management of a company is a practical specialist with his feet on the ground, even though he may be "reaching for the stars." His advice and recommendations are accepted with confidence because they are based solidly on extensive experience and continuous training-and because he is backed by an expert staff of research and engineering scientists in the home office and factory. Here's'a close-working team that is understanding in its grasp of problems creative in its proved ability to come up with practical solutions. These men never-let's say it again, neaer suggest a Magnaflux method or unit unless-they know of a certainty that it will do the job expected of it I . It's one of the reasons why the company maintains its position as the undisputed leader in its field.
Users of the various testing methods get the services of intensively trained Magnaflux engineers. All users are thoroughly trained in the correct procedures of inspecting and testing and in interpreting indications of defects. Text books, engineering classes in centralized cities and scientific laboratory services are included in the cooperation which is an integral part of the services which the company extends. These users include nearly all of the large companies in the U.S., and many of the smallest, several thousand in all.
Every activity, each research project of Magnaflux is aimed squarely at helping Industry DETECT DEFECTS-Io find the invisible imperfections that might cause needless, costly and even perilous failures of equipment and materials.
)Iagnaflux Corporation is engaged in the manufacture and sale of equipment for non-destructive testing of structural materials for physical defects. Without these methods, defective parts may be built into all kinds of machinery and equipment, and those parts may fail, to cause serious loss of life and property. From its original, yet-to-be-equalled MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION, the scope of the company's research and engineering has steadily expanded. Now it is playing a vital part in helping a wide variety of manufacturers make their products less costly to buy and better to own through additional methods, such as:
Positive detection of defects in non-magnetic metals and in ceramics. Ultrasonic measurement of dimensions which cannot be directly measured.
Mat'erials and processes for indicating dangerous stresses and strains, used as a guide for designers and manufacturers.
In addition to the manufacture and sale of its testing equipment, Magnaflux Corporation maintains company-operated Field Inspection and Laboratory Inspection Service in strategically located cities.
These services are made available upon a fee basis.
The Field Inspection Service is widely used by operators of large equipment of many kinds as a part of erection or overhaul inspection. It is available to users anywhere in the United States. Magnaflux testing means include; MAGNAFLUX, and fluorescent MAGNAGLO for magnetic materials; ZYGLO for non-magnetic metals and solids; STATIFLUX for non-conducting ceramics, such as porcelain enamel; PARTEK for porous and unfired ceramics, powdered metals, etc.; SONIZON to measure thickness from one side only, with ultrasonics; and STRESSCOAT brittle coatings for stress measurement of actual working parts. They are described on the following pages.

-{pplications of Magnaflux inspection for cracks, foleign inclusions or discontinuities at or near the sul'face are almost limitless. Typical are inspection of steel billets-hot-rolled or cold drawn bar stock forgings plates castings pipe - tubing - weldments -and any steel - parts seamless - tools springs automotive such as machine and aircraft parts. Magnaflux inspection is also routine in most railroad shops and in aircraft, truck and bus overhaul shops . . . and in the Armed Folces-Army, Air Force, and Navy . . . during both manufacture and overhaul of equipment.
How Magnaflux Works A suitable magnetic field is set up in the proper direction within the part with Magnaflux equipment. Sudden interruptions to this magnetic fleld by cracks or discontinuities in the part crowd some of the magnetic flux (i.e. lines of force) outside the surface of the part. These "leakage" fields act as local magnets, and attract and hold
finely divided ferro-magnetic particles as they are applied. This builds up a definite indication at the exact location, showing the extent and shape of
the crack or flaw. The magnetic particles are applied by hand or automatically, either as dry powder or by the "wet" method in suspension in a thin oil carrier. Various colors are provided to
make the crack indications stand out most clearly on any color of surface.

Magnaglo, developed to meet industry's need for speedier inspection, is so fast that it keeps pace with the highest production line volume and speed.
Essentially an extension of Magnaflux Magnetic Particle Inspection, it is the fastest means known for continuous inspection. It is faster even than visual inspection. Magnaglo makes it possible to find defects in small parts at rates up to thousands of pieces per hour. Even large parts, such as railroad axles, are being inspected and euery d,efeet found-with Magnaglo and a single operator, at rates up to and exceeding 150 axles per 8-hour shift. Magnaglo reveals even the smallest crack with a glowing indication so clearly defined that it cannot escape being seen. Defects are instantly observed in normally hard-to-see places, such as in the threads of bolts or in the interiors of holes. For maximum sensitivity plus high-speed inspection Magnaglo offers four pronounced and outstanding advantages: 1. The indications glorv in the darkness to atftact the inspector's eyes. He does not have to search the surface for them.

How Zyglo Works A film of Zyglo Fluorescent Penetrant is applied by simply dipping, brushing or spraying. After it has entered all cracks, holes and seams, the surface excess is washed away with water spray and
the part is allowed to dry. Either a dry powder or water-suspension developer is applied to create a dry powder fllm on surfaces to draw Penetrant from the defect. All operations may be automatic. Inspection is conducted under blaek light in a darkened booth. Every defect glows as a brilliant indication. Leak tests are conducted by applying fluorescent Zyglo penetrant to one side of welds or casting walls after which the opposite side is inspected with portable black light. Any leak glows brightly, as a fluorescent line or spot, when the fluorescent penetrant draws through the finest crack or pore.

sound you cannot hear to measure thicknesses you cannot see-or to find hidden defects
u,ses
Measurement of thickness of walls in engine cylinders, tanks, steel propeller blades, sheet metal shapes or irregularly shaped objects was formerly an uncertain and difficult job. Even with both sides "open" to micrometer measurement, procedures have been slow on large objects. Magnaflux Sonizon offers a radically better, quicker way. It has been called: "A micrometer needing only one arm." Using ultrasonics, it makes such measurements as quickly as a crystal probe can be moved over the surface and "reports" its - on the face of a flndings on a direct reading scale cathode ray tube. It instantly detects thin spots in walls or in cast, formed, welded or ground products. It detects defects, including laminations deep below the surface, and reveals lack of bond between metals, as in bearings and joints. In these and many other applications where accuracy and dependability are essential, Sonizon is proving a powerful way to save time and reduce production and inspection costs.
How Inspection with Sonizon Works A constantly-changing range of high frequency electric current is fed to a quartz crystal in the
hand probe. The crystal changes these electrical impulses to ultrasonic (inaudible) sound waves that travel to the opposite face of the material and are reflected back to the crystal. \Vhen they arrive exactly as the next rvaves are ieaving the crystal, an energy change occurs in the electronic circuits. Amplifled, this causes a peak in the line appearing across the cathode ray tube. Location of this peak on a calibrated scale gives a direct reading, as easy to read as a ruler. It is accurate to within 1 to 2/c, for either thickness of material or depth of defect. In use, the crystal is simply slid acr.oss the oiled surface of the part being checked, and continuous readings noted. Sonizon can be used for thicknesses of .010" to 2.00", on an)' material of moderately good sound conducting characteristics, including glass, metals, and plastics.

Long before you even heard rumors of these nerv N{agnaglo and Magnaflux Dry Concentrates, each had behind it thousands of man-hours of scientific development, research and field testing. Instruments and testing devices, too, r{ere used.as accurate as you are likely to see in the most adr.anced research laboratory. For instance, did you know that at Magnaflux, formulation, improvement, and control of testing materials involves the use of such equipment as electronic counters, digital computers, photometric and fluorometric instruments? That it is a full-time job for 16 specialists and their a-.si-ctants? That, depending upon the material and its use" rte measure and test for such specifics as:
