The Jungle Book: Summary Introduction: Rudyard Kiplings The Jungle Book takes place in Southern India.

A human child is lost in the jungle and becomes part of the Seeonee Wolf-Pack. C1: There was a wolf family in a den. They were talking to Tabaqui, a jackal who said Shere Khan, the tiger, was here hunting a man. Then they heard him roar. Then a baby walked into the den and started eating with the wolf-cubs. Suddenly, Shere Khan appeared and wanted the human child. The mother wolf said no. Shere Khan tried to get in the den but he was too big. The father wolf told Shere Khan that the wolf pack would decide if the child lives or dies, not him. Shere Khan and Tabaqui left. The wolf parents kept the child and called him Mowgli, which means frog. A few weeks later, they took Mowgli to a wolf-pack meeting where all the wolves met. The leader of the pack was called Akela. Father wolf introduced Mowgli to him. When he did, Shere Khan said, The man-cub belongs to me. Akela didnt listen to him. Then Akela said that two people must speak for Mowgli who are not the father or mother. First came Baloo, a big brown bear. He said he would teach Mowgli the Law of the Jungle, which were very important jungle rules. Then came Bagheera, a big, black, strong panther. He said he would give the wolves a fat cow to eat if they let Mowgli live with the mother and father. Akela and the wolves liked this idea. Shere Khan did not like this idea and was angry. Over the next ten years, Mowgli grew and learned how to survive in the jungle. C2: Baloo taught Mowgli how to speak to other animals with the Master-Words: We are of one blood, you and I. Some monkeys called the Bandar-log wanted to make Mowgli their leader so they could be more powerful. Mowgli could teach them to make things. But Baloo warned Mowgli the Bandar-log had no law and were only trouble, so Mowgli decided not to talk to play with them. However, the monkeys took Mowgli. Baloo and Bagheera tried to stop them, but the monkeys were too fast and got away (escaped). However, Mowgli talked to Chil the kite (a kind of bird) in birdtalk and told him to tell Baloo and Bagheera where to find him at the Lost City, the monkeys home. Baloo and Bagheera tried to find help and found Kaa, a big python. Kaa likes to eat monkeys and monkeys are afraid of him because he is good at killing them. They told Kaa that the monkeys called him old yellow fish. Kaa was now angry. He was also hungry and said he would go with them. C3: Bagheera and Kaa were at the Lost City. Baloo was slow so he would come later. They had to be careful because there were only two of them and hundreds of monkeys. They had a plan: Bagheera would attack them and Kaa would climb up the west wall and then come down the hill very fast. Bagheera attacked the monkeys hitting left and right. The monkeys attacked too. They put Mowgli in a dark room which had no doors or windows, so he could not escape (get out). However, Mowgli heard Bagheera fighting and knew he was in trouble. He shouted Go to the tank. Bagheera jumped in and was safe because Monkeys dont like water. Then Baloo arrived and started attacking. Then Kaa, quickly and silently moved down the hill among the monkeys. When they saw Kaa, they shouted, Run! Kaa opened his mouth and made a long, loud hissss sound. The monkeys suddenly stopped and didnt move. Then Bagheera came out of the tank. Baloo and Bagheera didnt know where to find Mowgli. Mowgli shouted from the room, Here! In this room. But he couldnt get out. Kaa knew what to do. He lifted his head and body off the ground and hit the rooms wall with his head making a hole for Mowgli to get out. Mowgli thanked Kaa. Then Kaa went back to the monkeys and danced. Kaas dance is dangerous to watch. The monkeys could not move. Even Baloo and Bagheera werent moving! Mowgli had to wake them up.

C4: One day Mowgli went to the wolf-pack meeting. He noticed that the other wolves did not look at him if he looked hard at them. He thought this was strange because he didnt think he was different from the other wolves. But he forgot he was a boy, not a wolf. He was friends with the animals, except Shere Khan who wanted to kill him. Shere Khan started making friends with the younger wolves, and Akela was getting older. Shere Khan started to make fun of the other wolves. He said, I hear you cant look into the man-cubs eyes. This made the young wolves angry because Mowgli was different. Bagheera told Mowgli that the younger wolves did not like this and would get him to leave the wolf-pack because Mowgli was no longer a boy, but a man, and the wolves didnt not want a man with them. In fact, they wanted to kill him because he would soon be a man. Bagheera told Mowgli he had to get some red flower (fire) from the village because all the other animals would be afraid of it. Mowgli said he would get it, and left for the town. While he was going to the town, he saw Akela trying to kill a deer, but could not. This meant he could no longer be the leader. Mowgli went to the village and got a fire-pot. He returned to a wolf-pack meeting and brought the fire-pot with him. He saw that Akela was no longer the leader. Shere Khan and the other wolves told Mowgli to leave because he was a man. Mowgli was angry and sad because he thought he and the other wolves were brothers. Angrily, he threw the fire-pot on the ground. The other wolves moved back because they were afraid of fire. Bagheera said that Mowgli was now the wolf-pack leader. However, Mowgli said he would go to the village of men and that the wolves were no longer his brothers. Then, he took a long piece of wood, put it in the fire, then took it out, and hit Shere Khan with it again and again. Shere Khan is frightened of fire (all animals are). After that, Mowgli said good-bye to his family. His family still loved him and wanted to talk to him. His wolf-brothers said, Come to the foot of the hill when you are a man and we will talk to you. Mowgli left for the village. C5: On the way to the village, Mowgli saw lots of cows and buffaloes. He went to the gate of the village and sat down. A lot of people came to see him and saw bite-marks of wolves on his body. One man said, He is a wolf-child who has run away from the jungle. Then another person said to a lady called Messua that Mowgli looked like her son that was taken by a tiger a long time ago. So, Messua took Mowgli to her house as her son. For three months Mowgli learned to be a man. He learned the language, to wear mans clothes and to work in the fields with the other men. Mowgli sometimes went to hear stories from a man called Buldeo. One day Buldeo told a story about the jungle. Mowgli laughed at him. He said, Buldeos stories are stupid. He knows nothing about the jungle. The villagers didnt like this and told him to go work with the other boys to look after (take care of) the cows and buffaloes. One day, Mowgli saw Grey Brother, his wolf brother under a tree on the foot of the hill. He said to Mowgli that Shere Khan returned to kill Mowgli. One month passes, and Grey wolf returns and says to Mowgli that the tiger is waiting by the ravine for him to kill him. Mowgli knows he must kill Shere Khan first. Grey Brother tells Mowgli that Shere Khan just ate. This is good news for Mowgli because it will mean the tiger will be slow. Mowgli has a plan. Mowgli will first put a lot of cows at the bottom of the ravine. Then he will take all the buffaloes to the top of the ravine and then chase the tiger with the buffaloes. Shere Khan wont be able to go left or right because the ravines walls are too high. He cant go back because of the buffaloes. He cant go ahead because of the cows. When Mowgli runs after Shere Khan, the buffaloes will run over the tiger and kill him. They did their plan and it worked. Shere Khan was dead. Mowgli took the coat off the tiger. Then he decided to return the cows and buffaloes. But when he went back to the village, the villagers told him to leave. So, Mowgli left and the jungle became his home again.
