A DOG-OWNERS GUIDE TO SARASOTA, FL

PROJECT STATEMENT

To redesign the Sarasota edition of Explorers Guides in a way that it becomes relevant for dog-owners, allowing for early trip-planning and ease of locating information.

What are the travel books already out there like?

1. INSIDEOUT LOS ANGELES

POSITIVE Highly legible typography despite books small size Format suits content (small book for quickand-easy info) Placement and size of photographs create nice rhythmn

1. INSIDEOUT LOS ANGELES

POSITIVE Waterproof cover Useful extras: compass and pen

NEGATIVE Compass broken? (good idea, poor implementation) Finish on silver background reflects too much light (and LAs a sunny place) Index for map is printed on back of map, forcing user to flip back and forth

2. INSIDERS GUIDE NASHVILLE

POSITIVE Format suits content (large book for in-depth content) Clear information hierarchy

2. INSIDERS GUIDE NASHVILLE

POSITIVE Compelling cover

NEGATIVE Cover misguides reader about the look of the interior: black and white with a strict grid system Icon system for denoting sections is unnecessary, as icons appear only appear next to section titles and, even then, are not seen when quickly flipping through pages

2. INSIDERS GUIDE NASHVILLE

NEGATIVE Price of attractions is often noted, but that price does not determine how those attractions are ordered (ranking from cheapest to most expensive would be more helpful)

3. SPIRAL GUIDES NEW ENGLAND

POSITIVE Clearly visible section titles Thick, waterproof pages Generally good pacing created by the balance of small images and fullbleed ones Spiral binding allows pages to be flipped through quickly

3. SPIRAL GUIDES NEW ENGLAND

POSITIVE Bright-colored cover allows for easy visibility when thrown into purse/bag

NEGATIVE Cover is cluttered and unorganized with illegibly condensed type Extremely narrow columns of type Certain pages suddenly switch orientation Rag follows photos

4. EXPLORERS GUIDES SARASOTA, SANIBEL ISLAND, & NAPLES

POSITIVE Appropriate colors on cover Decent rhythmn created by photographs Pagination easily visible NEGATIVE Photos within lack color and excitement (feel generic) Category titles lost in flow of body copy Overwhelmingly long line length at times Amount of columns changes without typesize changing

This is Emily.
30 years old Single with no children Fun-loving and open to trying new activities Loves her 7-year-old beagle, Charlie, like family While others may vacation with a significant other or best friend, she wants Charlie to be her travel companion to Florida Likes feeling prepared by having her trip planned out

USER SCENARIO
Likes feeling prepared by having her trip planned out Picks up the Sarasota edition of Explorers Guides at her local bookstore

No other books focus on pet-owners, so leaves empty-handed and disappointed

Flips to main content, but gets confused about what section shes reading or where other sections begin

Does that say alligators?!

Immediately overwhelmed by barrage of info in intro

Goes on self-guided Internet search for pet-friendly places in Florida

Exhausted after spending hours sifting through tons of websites

Still hasnt found enough activities to fill up her entire vacation

Difficulty finding places to take dogs while in Florida leaves her unsatisfied with vacation

Goes on vacation without clear plan and spends entire first day looking for petfriendly hotel

Misses all activities she doesnt think to seek out on her own

What Emily needs is a single resource that

relieves her of time and energy spent searching on her own allows her to foster her relationship with Charlie focuses on activities she and Charlie can do together has a clear organizational structure, so she can find information quickly helps her discover new activities she wouldnt have thought of herself
