Lifecycle Of A Butterfly A butterfly lays several eggs on a leaf. When the eggs hatch into caterpillars, they would feed on the leaf. Below are the stages on how an egg becomes an adult butterfly.

A butterfly starts life as a very small egg. Butterfly eggs are usually laid on the leaves of plants. The egg hatches into a larva or a caterpillar. Caterpillars do not stay in this stage for very long and in this stage they eat a lot. Since caterpillars are small and cannot travel to a new plant, they need to hatch on the kind of leaves that they eat. When caterpillars eat, they grow by shedding their skin. The caterpillar attaches itself to a twig and forms a pupa or chrysalis. Inside of the pupa, the caterpillars body transforms into the beautiful parts of a butterfly. This process is called metamorphosis. An adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, folding both wings against its body. Then it starts to flap its wings and fly. Within three or four hours, the butterfly will learn to fly. The adult butterfly then starts to reproduce and the life cycle starts all over again.
