Abstract
The calculation method of a complicated coil inductance in COMSOL Multiphysics software by 3D Magnetic vector potential
Finite Element Method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, methods of inductance calculation are expounded and the principles of
3D magnetic vector potential finite element method used to calculate the inductance are analyzed as well. Basing on these, we
conduct the expression of the magnetic energy represented by magnetic vector under 3D coordinate condition. Furthermore, a
discussion of electromagnetic field control equations and the boundaries about utilizing energy method to calculate the inductance
is presented. And the 3D FEM discrete equations of magnetic vector potential are deduced by using variation method. An
inductance calculation sample for a complicated coil whose size is very large and which has large size difference between height
and width is given to explain the process of setting 3D FEM electromagnetic field model in COMSOL Multiphysics. In order to
solve the large size difference problem, finer and coarser mesh methods are applied to improve the grid meshing quality. In
addition, the precision of electromagnetic computation is increased by using infinite element to simulate the outer boundary. In the
end, an actual measurement is carried out to get the complicated coil inductance. The comparison of the simulation and the
measurement shows a good agreement, which verifies that the 3D FEM inductance calculation method is correct and practical.
