Learning Teaching Plan __Brain Exploration______

1. Aim To go more in depth into central nervous system following prior lesson on function of nervous system. 2. Standards Table: Drawn from Intermediate Science Core Document Content Standard 4 Key Idea Key Idea 1: Living things are both similar to and different from each other and from nonliving things. Performance Indicator(s) 1.2: Explain the functioning of the major human organ systems and their interactions. Major Understanding(s) 1.2a: Each system is composed of organs and tissues which perform specific functions and interact with each other, e.g., digestion, gas exchange, excretion, circulation, loco-motion, control, coordination, reproduction, and protection from disease. 1.2h: The nervous and endocrine systems interact to control and coordinate the bodys responses to changes in the environment, and to regulate growth, development, and reproduction. Hormones are chemicals produced by the endocrine system; hormones regulate many body functions. Process Skills Standards 1, 2, 6, 7 Standard 7 Key Idea 2: Solving interdisciplinary problems involves a variety of skills and strategies, including effective work habits; gathering and processing information; generating and analyzing ideas; realizing ideas; making connections among the common themes of mathematics, science, and technology; and presenting results Intermediate Process Skills 9. Identify structure and function relationships in organisms. 3. Performance Objectives: (1) Students should be able to explain why animals need a nervous system. (2) Students should be able to identify basic components of nervous system: brain, spine, cerebrum, cerebellum, spinal cord, neurons 4. Key Questions: What is the role of the central nervous system? What are the main functional components of CNS and brain specifically? 5. Misconceptions about the topic Misconception Correct Understanding You only use 10% of your brain You use entire brain, myth is based off an early American psychologist Only humans have well developed nervous Nervous systems vary, but all are complex. system Brain size equals intelligence There is no correlation between the two (ex: elephant versus human?) 6. Prerequisite skills: Basic understanding of human anatomy and the different systems already covered (i.e. circulatory system, skeletal system). How to use basic computer functions.

7. Vocabulary (a) from the Core Document: Nervous system 8. (b) additional terms: Cerebellum, cerebrum, brain stem, spinal cord 9. Materials: Entry card with questions on it, one computer for two students, worksheet with parts of brain and function, exit cards. 10. Safety concerns and disposal: N/A 11. Learning and Teaching Experiences Time 5 E Teacher Does Student Does (min) 5 Engage Entry card with questions: Which is Answer question cards, bigger, human brain or elephant brain? share answers in class Which is smarter, human or elephant? 10 Engage, Tell students We will be having a pop Participate in discussion. Explore quiz on the nervous system, it will Write their symptoms on make up 25% of your grade. Students board, and see if they have should panic. Then use this panic as an similarities. introduction to discussion, what were their symptoms? Make a list of symptoms on board. What caused these symptoms (nervous system caused increase heart rate, sweating, faster breathing). Ask why it is important to be able to respond to the environment like this? What organ system is responsible? 18 Elaborate Hand out diagram of brain/spinal cord. Get into groups and do Have students in groups of 2 go to this activity on the computer. website: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/brain/3d/ and mouse through the brain. Groups assigned by teacher randomly. Students should be able to fill out their worksheet with the parts of the brain and the functions of them. Following 10 minutes of working on this we will go over it together in class. 5 Evaluate Exit quiz with the following Do exit quiz questions: Name 3 parts of the nervous system (performance objective 2). What is the function of the nervous system (performance objective 1)? 2 Closure, Hand out homework assignment and Homework describe (see attached) Receive homework and ask questions if any.
