SELECTED BIBLIOGRPSHY OF WELL LOGGING INTERPRETATION IN SHALY RESERVOIR ROCK

BY

Walter H. Fertl Continental Oil Company, Ponca City, Oklahoma

Formation evaluation may best be considered as a blend of science and art used to determine composition and physical rock properties in-situ, the nature and amount of fluids contained in the pore space, and thereby giving an indication of the economic worth of natural resources accumulated in the subsurface. Well logging, as we know it today, was born on September 5, 1927 when the first resistivity log was run in well Diffenbach #2905, Pechelbronn oil field, Alsace, France. It came out of experiments intended to achieve another purpose, a feature which is not uncommon in scientific research. Successful expansion of well logging created the additional task to properly define the professional activities of a fellow man, commonly called log analyst. In our age of specialization, i.e. the age of Aquarius, the professional log analyst quite frequently is regarded as a specialist by a hydrologist, geologist, mining- and petroleum engineer, a generalist by physicists and electronic engineers, an expensive accessory by the manager of his company, or an employee in the lumber industry by the general public. One special area the log analyst soon had to cope with centered in development of a reliable interpretation method to evaluate shaly, silty, low resistivity pay zones. The presence of clay minerals, in laminated, dispersed and/or structural form, affects the spontaneous potential, all resistivity measurements and values of porosity derived from commercially available logging tools. In addition, effects due to the presence of hydrocarbons are superimposed. These difficulties and uncertainties have long been known. Mathematical models have emerged which consider the effect of "shaliness" in the evaluation of reservoir rocks. Proposed interpretation techniques range from simple manual computations to rather sophisticated computerized methods. Progress made over the past two decades in shaly sand interpretation has been mainly due to (1) development of new tools, (2) introduction of major new techniques, and (3) improvements of known methods. In other words, advances in this area have been along a broad front. As one may expect, advances have been somewhat spectacular and, of course, also less conspicuous. Progress is substantial and continuing, with contributions to this special field being worldwide, as we attempt to illustrate in some detail in the following listing of references. We have arranged the entries in chronological order and listed
