I have enjoyed Ashbys messages on Sunday evening. It has been good to be a listener for a change. God calls everyone (even pastors) to sit under teaching. The Lord has used Ashby to speak to me. It has been good for our church as well. If I preach every Sunday morning and evening during the year that equals 104 sermons, add to that Wednesday night Bible study, and the total times the church hears me teach equals 156. I know I will be gone, but I could teach 140 or more times each year. It is good for any church to hear a fresh voice. Ashby was more than a fresh voice, he was a voice with something to say. He offered some very good material on discipleship, framed very well by the Gather, Grow, and Go scenario. As I listened, I asked myself, Am I gathering, growing, and going? I gather for worship, with my Sunday school class and for fellowship. I am growing, I know more about the Bible than I did this time last year, and seek to live out my knowledge of the Scriptures and relationship with Jesus. I am going, better yet trying to be a witness as I go. I cannot let the scenario become a checklist, i.e. as long as I am gathering, growing, and going all is well in my world, rather the principles must serve as a catalyst as I walk with the Lord daily. I want to encourage you to jot down the Gather, Grow, and Go scenario, use it as a catalyst for your development as a member of the body of Christ.

Let me take a moment to highlight one of the many ways Second Baptist ministers to our community. Each Thursday SBCs food pantry is opened up to the community to assist those who need a little extra help with groceries. Our mission is to help families get through a week or two with the food that we provide. As many of you know, we mainly supply canned food and dry goods. However, a few months ago we were pleased to be able to partner with Panera Bread which means that every Thursday we are able to provide bread and baked goods in addition to what we already supply! Each week through our food pantry, we are able to show upwards of twenty families that Jesus really does love them and that we do too! Here is the catchthe food pantry is only as successful as the people who volunteer each week. Currently we are in need of volunteers for the food pantry, and you might just be the person for the job! Each Thursday, from 9:00 11:00 am, individuals are needed to fill bags, keep records, and visit with individuals who come to the church for help with food. In addition, last week I shared with you about an opportunity to help Second Baptist welcome our guests from Lincoln Elementary on October 4. We still need lots of help, so if you are free that Friday afternoon consider joining us! Call the church office for more information about these opportunities @ 993-2338.

All Music Night September 29

A few times a year we just open things up to anyone that has a song on their heart. If you want to sing this Sunday evening, the 29, just sign up on sheet on my office door. I must say however that I think when it comes to a featured soloist, lip sinkers need not apply. I do have some standards. ;)

Adult Coaches and Judges Needed!

Extreme Games begin October 20, on Sunday nights, after church. They will be for four weeks. Teams will score points by competing in wild, hilarious games each week. Teams will also get points for church attendance, bringing Bibles, friends, and etc. We need eight coaches (two per team), and four judges. No experience is needed. Duties mostly involve encouragement, cheerleading and helping tally scores. Please, come join us. You will have a blast. If you are willing to help contact the Church Office, or Dennis Blankenship. Flu Shots

We are hosting Lincoln Elementary School again this year. We are still in need of hosts to be available for our guests that afternoon.

May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you. Psalm 33:22

I picked up my pen in the quietness of the early morning and began to write. My heart is full of gratitude for all the blessings and gifts God showered me with. The most treasured gift of all is Jesus, and His love for me. I thank Him for He dances over me and sings all around me. He lets me know He loves me, even when I am unaware of His presence. I thank Him for He knows what true love is. Paul wrote about it in I Corinthians 13. True love is patient, true love is kind, true love does not envy, true love does not boast, true love is not proud, true love is not self-seeking, true love is not easily angered, true love does not keep record of wrongdoing, true love rejoices in truth, true love protects, true love hopes and true love always perseveres. As followers of Christ, and His disciples, we need to practice true love. The one common feature of all these qualities is that true love is not self-centered. Rather, it is always others-centered, considering the needs of others above themselves. When I think of a portrait of true love, I think of Mother Teresa. She walked the streets of Calcutta, looking for those who were dying, that she could care for and pray for. When I think of her life, I see a lady clothed with love. She was patient, kind, humble, always thinking of others, forgiving, honest, and always hopeful and persevering until she completed her mission here on earth. A true disciple will give up everything you have to follow Christ and walk in love and forgiveness. Pray for our giving to the Illinois Baptist Missions, and our hosting the October 4, Marion Homecoming Parade, for the Lincoln Elementary School. May God be glorified.
