Trend for Hotel Wi-Fi Coverage

Mobile service popularity
Business travelers demand mobile offices and other mobile Internet services. Mobile applications on smart phones such as micro-blogs and Wechat surge and require deployment of wireless networks in hotels.

Competition from other hotels

Industry-leading hotels all deploy Wi-Fi networks to attract customers. Many people prefer to stay at hotels that provide wireless access.

Wi-Fi Deployment Challenges Encountered by Hotels

Challenge 1: Difficulty in cable deployment Challenge 2: Poor indoor signals
Corridor Guest room

Recabling is necessary regardless of whether an indoor settled AP or a distributed AP is installed, which usually takes a long time and affects business operations.

Signals have to pass through thick walls to reach inside guest rooms, which causes large signal attenuation. If signals are only forwarded to hotel corridors, signals inside guest rooms may be weak and cannot meet requirements.

What Is WOC?

AP

Splitter/combiner Guest rooms The hotel has deployed CATV cables. WOC panel

Cable TV signal

WLAN over CATV (WOC) uses CATV cables to transmit WLAN signals. WLAN and cable TV signals are combined by a combiner and transmitted to guest rooms through the CATV cables. Inside the room, the mixed WLAN/CATV signals are separated using a WOC panel. The WOC solution uses existing CATV cables in hotels to transmit WLAN signals, which reduces workload on cable deployment. WLAN signals are forwarded to guest rooms without wall penetration signal loss.

Solution Overview
1. Outside a room, 2.4 GHz signals of APs and CATV signals are transmitted to a splitter/combiner deployed on the corridor or in the

equipment room. Mixed WLAN/CATV signals are generated. 2. These mixed WLAN/CATV signals are then forwarded to a WOC panel in each guest room through existing CATV cables. 3. Inside each room, the mixed signals are separated using a WOC panel. 4. WLAN signals are then transmitted through antennas on the panel to mobile terminals, while the CTAV signals are transmitted to

and TV programs.

Main Device Components

8-way splitter/combiner 4-way splitter/combiner

Splitter/combiner (mandatory)
A splitter/combiner combines CATV and WLAN signals. There are 2-way, 4way, and 8-way splitter/combiners, among which the last two types are widely used.

1/2 power splitter (optional)

1/2 power splitter A power splitter separates AP radio signals into two channels, each of which is combined with CATV signals by a splitter/combiner. This enables an AP to provide radio coverage for more rooms.

Panel with an external antenna Panel with a built-in antenna WOC panel (mandatory) Each room has one WOC panel installed to separate mixed signals forwarded into the room. The WOC panel has a built-in antenna or connects to an external antenna to provide WLAN coverage. The WOC panel also provides a CATV interface to transmit CATV signals.

AP6310SN

Indoor distributed AP6310SN (mandatory)

The AP6310SN sends WLAN radio signals to the WOC system and connects to the IP network of the hotel.

WOC Networking (1)

Each AP provides signal coverage for 1 to 4 rooms.

Each AP provides signal coverage for 5 to 8 rooms.

Restricted by signal strength and bandwidth, the more the rooms covered by an AP, the smaller the bandwidth for each user and the shorter the distance between the AP and the rooms. The networking is determined based on room distributions and bandwidth required by users.

WOC Networking (2)

Each AP provides signal coverage for 5 to 8 rooms. Each AP provides signal coverage for 9 to 16 rooms.

Solution Highlight
Strong signals and wide coverage
There is no wall penetration signal loss, and signals are evenly distributed without coverage holes.

Easy implementation and low cost

No extra cabling is required, which saves costs and time.

Stable signals and zero interference

Step 1: Install the AP.

Step 2: Install and connect the splitter/combiner.

AP signals are forwarded into rooms without interference from neighboring APs. 2.4 GHz 860 MHz WLAN CATV signals work at different frequency bands and do not interfere with each other.

Step 3: Install and connect the WOC panel.

WOC Solution Design Steps

Step 1: Determine coverage scenarios and service requirements. Step 2: Calculate signal loss caused by the AP and WOC panel in the guest room. Step 3: Determine the maximum cable length allowed between the AP and WOC panel. Step 4: Select the optimal networking scheme. Step 5: Design the WOC network for each area of the hotel based on the preceding steps.
