HUMILITY AND FAITH

SELF: Because one’s spiritual progress is dependent on the poverty of ego

towards Self and unflinching faith in your Lord, some further reflections on humility and
faith are necessary.

SOUL: Please, Lord, tell me in detail all that I need to know in order to attain
faith and humility perfectly.

SELF: It is important that the neophyte realizes that no amount of mental

speculation, empiric research, hard work, meritorious work, or even the minute study of
text of revelation can yield the desired goal of pure love of God. I emphatically state:

Only by individual’s devotional love,

Can I be known as I am in heaven above?

Not even ordinary devotional service is enough. It must be exclusive, undivided

and pure, free from the sirens of mental speculation and earthly motivation. Or, as has
been said in the past, your service must be “unmotivated and uninterrupted.” Now, that is
important, for conditioned souls always have an ulterior motivation and are prone to
interruption. Indeed, the nature of conditioned mind is to accept and reject. However
natural such behavior may be, just the opposite is called for: unmotivated and
uninterrupted service.

SOUL: I’m really bewildered now. It seems so difficult, Lord. How will I ever
succeed?

SELF: You never will. But it becomes easy when I empower you. You must have
simultaneous distrust of yourself and confidence in Me. You cannot attain pure devotional
service unless I empower you. You cannot perform one good action, resist one
temptation, or endure even a little trial unless I help you. This truth must be realized and
remembered always – every day, every hour, and every second of your life. In this way,
you will be free from false pride and have perfect faith in Me.

SOUL: But I have so many enemies, Lord. How will I ever defeat all of them?
What if they all attack at once?

SELF: One or all, what is the difference? If in a dream one foe or many attack
you, is there any difference? Just wake up, My servant, and realize yourself to be spirit-
soul. You are already eternal, full of knowledge and bliss. You are dreaming that you are
a material body. It is a hallucination of the soul. Previously, I explained to one of my
extraordinary devotees:

All those who know truth in its reality

Know well that the real never ceases to be,
That the unreal, in fact, does never exist
Such knowledge is gained by those who persist

SELF: Wake up!

SOUL: I’m trying, My Lord. Your wards are so wonderful. Can this really be
true? I hope it is. That would make me so happy.

SELF: Just know, My dear servant, that since I am perfect and complete,
everything I do is perfect and complete. My creation is the best of all possible worlds.
Just have faith in Me. Then you will not have to worry about anything. You will be
simply joyful – eternally.

To acquire such confidence, just hear about Me from bona fide authorities. Hear
about My qualities: My name, My form, My pastimes – in short, anything connected to
Me. They are all absolute, and each is fully competent to make you perfect.

Know that I am capable to conquering any number of demons, great or small,

subtle or gross. Moreover, know the difference between you and Me. Although you may
fall down and be defeated, I cannot fall, and I am never defeated. On the contrary, I
defeat and destroy all, if not personally, then in My form of eternal time.

Time I am, omniscient destroyers of worlds.

Into war’s inferno these soldiers are hurled.

Understand, My devoted follower, that you may be overwhelmed by sin. You may
labour in vain to free yourself from sin and follow virtue. You may have an inclination to
evil, and may even feel yourself falling more and more under evil’s fearful grasp. Still, do
not give up and lose faith. Instead, know that I am different: I am transcendental to the
modes of material nature. I am the supreme controller of all planets and demigods, as
well as these insignificant modes of nature.

Moreover, I am the very Self of your self. You are My infinitesimal reflection You
are in Me and are Mine. Fear not. This knowledge will release you from all bondage and
arouse in you great hope and confidence.

SOUL: How can I always remember and never forget this? Please, help me,
Lord!
 SELF: For that purpose, I have given you the processes of devotional service,
beginning with hearing and invoking of My Holy Name.

Remember that this kind of spiritual battle is not material. It yields an eternal,
spiritual victory for the soul who has the courage to continue to the end. This is
impossible for those who throw down their weapons out of fear or discouragement, or for
those who give up their faith in Me. My infallible help is there for those who fight till the
end.

Sometimes I allow My devotees to be wounded – just to test their faith and show
their velour – but the outcome is never in question. Therefore, My dear servant, get up
and fight. Persevere to the end. Victory is yours. I promise you this, for you are My very
dear friend.
