The Akpo FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading Vessel) is owned by Total Upstream Nigeria Ltd.
Construction of the vessel was awarded to a consortium of Technip of France and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in Korea. At 310 metres long and 61 metres wide and with close to 40,000 tons of topside, Akpo is one of the largest FPSOs in the world, producing 225,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Located south of Port Harcourt, off the coast of Nigeria in West Africa, the Akpo FPSO will be permanently moored in one of the worlds harshest environments. Due to the high risk of corrosion and the possibility of hydrocarbon fire, Total required high performance coating systems that would protect the Akpo FPSO against such severe conditions. Selected by Total, due to their proven technology and excellent track record in severe environments, International Protective Coatings supplied all the corrosion protection coatings as well as passive fire protection (PFP) for the Akpo FPSO, including among others the leading products Intershield 300, Intertherm 751CSA and Chartek 7. In addition to supplying coatings in Korea, International Protective Coatings also provided products and technical support for the flare tower and some modules fabricated at the Grinaker yard in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The Shell operated Perdido Spar is the deepest oil development, the deepest drilling and production platform with the deepest subsea well in the world.
By operating in ultra-deep waters off the Gulf of Mexico, the Perdido Development Spar faces harsh corrosive conditions. Not to worry though as the production platform receives quality protective coatings and essential fire protection from International Protective Coatings. As Shells most ambitious deepwater offshore oil and gas development to date, the Perdido Spar will float on the oceans surface in nearly 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) of water and is capable of producing as much as 130,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Located 220 miles (354 km) from Galveston, Texas, the Perdido Spar will bring in oil from three fields: Great White, Silvertip and Tobago. The production from these fields will be transported to US refineries via 77 miles (123 km) of oil export pipelines and 107 miles (172 km) of gas export pipelines. The pipelines will travel over a very rugged sea floor and will connect the Perdido Spar to the oil and gas market in the USA. Spars historically were used as marker buoys for gathering oceanographic data and for oil storage. The spar design is now being used for both drilling and production. The distinguishing feature of a spar is its deep-draft hull which produces favourable motion characteristics compared to other floating concepts. The Perdido project, of which Shell owns 35% and operates on behalf of partners BP (27.5%) and Chevron (37.5%), consists of a largediameter, single vertical cylinder supporting a deck. It contains a deep-draft floating caisson, which is a hollow cylindrical structure similar to a very large buoy. Its four major systems are hull, moorings, topsides and risers. Worth an estimated one billion US dollars (715 million Euros), it was vital for the owners that the Perdido Spar was protected from the costly effects of corrosion. With an extensive track record in supplying protective coatings to the oil and gas market, International Protective Coatings was chosen by Shell to supply a principal system of Interzinc 52, Intergard 475HS and Interthane 990 for the topsides. The system of Interzinc 52, zinc rich primer, followed by Intergard 475HS and topcoated with the polyurethane Interthane 990, provided a long-term anti-corrosion solution to key areas of the Perdido Spar protecting it from the harsh atmospheric environment in the Gulf of Mexico. The production and storage of oil has the potential to cause catastrophic fires. To mitigate this risk, Chartek 7 was utilised for all the fire protection requirements on the Perdido Spar. The ability to offer high quality fire protection made Chartek the ideal choice. Installed at new construction, Chartek with virtually no maintenance, helps to minimise maintenance expenditure over the lifetime of this new production facility.

Inspirer Jackup, Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Frontier Drillship, India
Weighing over 27,000 tonnes the SSV Victoria is the latest semi-submersible drilling rig to leave the DSME yard in Korea. Taller than the Statue of Liberty, the Victoria is designed for deepwater offshore environments to search for new oil and gas reserves and is already drilling off the coast of Brazil.
Project year: 2009 Products used: Intergard 787, Interthane 990 Company: Petroserv SA Operator: Petrobras Yard: DSME, Korea Drilling depth: 10,000 m Owned by Petroserv AS, the SSV Victoria has already been signed on a 7 year lease by Petrobras. Its ability to drill up to 9,000 m in water depths greater than 3,000 m makes it an important asset to Petrobras as the explore the Tupi oil field. Lying 250 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro the Tupi field is the largest oil discovery in the Americas for 30 years. Petrobras now lease nearly 80% of the worlds deepwater offshore drilling rigs as they continue to invest heavily in upstream activities. The Tupi field is estimated to contain 8 billion barrels of recoverable oil. However, this oil can only be reached by drilling through a 2 km thick salt bed on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. With global oil demand expected to exceed supply by 2015 the hunt for new sources of oil has never been more important. This is pushing the boundaries of exploration to new and deeper offshore areas. With requirements for high performance coatings to protect the SSV Victoria against aggressive offshore environments and the safety of the personnel on board, International Paints was selected as the preferred supplier. With daily drilling rates costing in the region of $400,000 a day, products such as Interthane 990 offer long term aesthetic protection over anticorrosive epoxy primers such as Intergard 787 maximising the commercial opportunities for Petroserv AS.

It is equivalent to a 40 story building in height and two soccer fields in width. Its weight is equal to that of 25,000 mid-sized cars. Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) held a naming ceremony on 29th of May 2007 for its newly constructed offshore platform, the worlds largest, which is designed to drill for and process crude oil and natural gas simultaneously.
The platform, named Piltun B, has been installed in the sea 16 kilometres (approx. 10 miles) east of Sakhalin island, the largest Russian island. It is expected to produce 2.6 million m of natural gas and 70,000 barrels of crude oil per day from June 2007 for the next 30 years. The platform, which is owned by Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC) is coated with products from International Protective Coatings. Zinc-rich epoxy Interzinc 52, high-build epoxy Intergard 475 HS and polyurethane finish Interthane 990 were used during the construction which began in January 2004 and took 41 months to complete. International Protective Coatings was selected by the owner due to its proven technology, experience, technical support, track record in severe environments and good reputation. The Sakhalin area, which is particularly cold in the winter months, limits existing platforms to operate only during summer. However, as the whole facility is constantly kept warm, Piltun B is capable of drilling and production work in all seasons. In short, it is an all-weather energy plant and is the largest of its kind ever assembled. Piltun B is designed to endure extreme weather conditions down to -40C (-104F) and to withstand significant seismic activity. In total, there are 1,200 kilometres (approx. 745 miles) of electric wire installed within the platform, and 75 kilometres (approx. 46 miles) of pipe; nine times the amount of electric wire and three times the amount of pipe that is installed in typical ultra-large oil tankers. 7.8 million man-hours were used during the construction phase, the equivalent of constructing nine LNG ships.

The Snorre B Semi-submersible floating production unit operates 45 km off the Norwegian mainland. With over 140 personnel on board, StatoilHydro required a passive fire protection system to maintain safety in the event of a fire. For this reason Chartek 7 was chosen and applied to living quarters, decks and firewalls covering an area of over 15,000 m2.
Chartek offers excellent steel protection in both hydrocarbon pool and jet fires. Chartek eliminates corrosion under fireproofing reducing year-on-year maintenance expenditure. As an epoxy intumescent fire protection system, Chartek features low applied density, good mechanical damage resistance and an easy application process. In addition, testing has shown that Chartek exhibits extremely low water uptake compared to other passive fire protection systems. Low water uptake is key to being able to maintain coating performance during the assets offshore lifetime. Overleaf are further examples of our Chartek track record

International are able to offer the expert knowledge required to meet stringent safety standards. In the event of a fire Chartek delays the onset of structural failure, enabling safe evacuation of personnel and prevent secondary hazards developing. The Chartek track record is unmatched. It is the only passive fire protection system which has proven performance, with inspections showing exceptional coating integrity after many years in service. Its ease of application also helps reduce building costs of assets. As the most recognized epoxy passive fire protection brand in the oil and gas industry,
